So there is nothing wrong with using VLC media player right? Am i missing out on anything (cause it's open-source and free stuff) that I would get with other media players?

The scaling algorithms are worse and there is no motion interpolation.

ok, but is that really observable to the human eye? And what software does have these things?

Test it for yourself.
If you don't see a difference, don't waste the CPU time.

Only weebs can see it, VLC fucking rules

It's fine. Some people will be autistic about it which player they use, but I still use VLC because it just works; I haven't found a reason to use another.

VLC's appeal is that it can open any media file while being available for every kind of computer
Quality wise MPV may be better , buy only if configured properly. Out of the box VLC is actually better with the defaults (MPV scaling is blinear by default lul)

Videophile cringe incoming

VLC can’t into Chinese cartoons. /thread

seek preview when?

Try mpv.net. It is mpv the way it should be on Windows.

mpv.net is minima like regular with a few extras. It has been well received by users and some reviewers.

mpv.net has context menu and better default keybindings.

mpv.net has a GUI for configurations and inputs.

mpv.net has integration with Everything to search media files from within the player.

mpv.net still has the benefits of regular mpv like CLI, and user-scripts.

Stax, please, just stop. Give up already. It's time to end this and yourself.

>wrong with using VLC media player
VLC reacts very badly if you are using Linux and pulseaudio to send audio to a remote output. I have a small NAS next to my surround receiver and use that for audio from both my desktop and laptop. mpv and everything else handles that perfectly. VLC is a stuffer-fest for 5 seconds on each new file opened. That's not a huge problem if you play a movie but if you have a playlist with musicvideos it's regular and it rules out using VLC. The same is true for programs like Elisa which use libvlc as a backend.

I know this is is a rather limited use-case. For me it's a deal-breaker and into the trash VLC goes - it's just useless to me.

Just to clarify: This isn't a general problem with pulseaudio network audio. everything else which plays audio, be it firefox or chrome or mpv or audacious or whatever - handles it like it's a local soundcard or bluetooth or whatever. It's also only a specific problem with VLC on that setup, playing to a local soundcard's fine.

This has been a problem for years, btw.

unironically install mpv

mpv has a nicer ui imo but that's about it. all i use it for is to watch porn webms anyway

VLC is fine, but be sure to set your dynamic range to full if you're on an Nvidia video card so it doesn't fuck with the colors

Try playing a dvd, from disc, with the autist's choice.
>m-muh physical media no one has optical drives outdated
kys pleb

werks on mine just fine

It's shit, slow, can't handle several types of videos and crashes with anything that has imperfect encoding. PotPlayer is infinitely better (and make sure to get your codec packs)

>is that really observable to the human eye?
jesus fucking christ this is the fps shit all over again
yes user, it's very noticeable. even when VLC isn't shitting itself and glitching out when other players don't, it still has worse quality
just go to MPC-HC, it's pretty much better in every single way

VLC default is bilinear too

I use pot player but just installed the default selected codecs. Should I install all codecs? Never had a problem with default ones

>playing a dvd, from disc
What is this, the 90s?

Sure, VLC is nice to keep around just in case for the odd file/format, but overall it's inferior. It's slow and the UI is kinda crappy and bloated.

VLC plays a small box of video for me, and the video remains the same size when I maximize, or try to go full screen.
This is pretty much why I don't use it.

The android version is god tier but the desktop version is shit, playing mkv files sometimes causes the image to look all grey and pixelated for a few seconds and then reverts back to normal, really annoying.

Nigga it can play audio cds either.
So much for all round media player

>Android version is god tier
Is it better than mpv on Android?

The scaling algorithms themselves are fine, but you have a rather limited selection and from what I can tell you are forced to choose between hardware acceleration and using a specific scaling algorithm (as those are only available via swscale).

Depends. If you use software decoding then it's bicubic.

>Is it better than mpv on Android?

Yes, the image quality to me is just as good and it's not as bare bones as mpv, ie it can actually remember your playback position.

What player has built in motion interpolation? Will it be like SVP?

in linux i can't use space key to pause/play videos, i have to click on video with mouse first to be able to do that.

Oh, it got too popular and then there was an NSA meme and now everyone here just shouts "botnet." VLC is fine. It's a bit of a dev trainwreck, but all useful open source software is.

Just tried it, and it doesn't look as good as mpv on my display (2k IPS), so I guess that I'll stick to mpv maybe even update the build if I gave time.

Powerdvd is the only one that I can remember that has thus built in, and it's better than SVP. Not free, and open source though.

modern TV's have much more advanced motion interpolation than you will ever have in any player

and upscalling

Is it true though?

>modern TVs
>good upscaling
lol
Doesn't come even close to ewa_lanczossharp, much less proper GLSL shaders

You are so wrong.

If VLC is open-source and popular, how come intelligent people haven't included/improved those features?

Attached: 1563712876464.png (600x600, 143K)

i wish MPV had a file browser, then i would use it

Attached: 1562110544953.png (2518x1024, 235K)

jfc, why would you want a second file explorer? Your OS has one!

Any worthwhile settings to change in VLC besides the basic interface stuff?

Using the gradfun filter can be beneficial for low quality content.

It does. See . Just install both mpv.net and everything.

Can mpv play livestreams? If it can do that then I'll switch to it.

Yes, it works really well with livestreamer or youtube-dl. It has useful options for video quality, caching, etc.

New mpv.net fresh from the oven.
