Shameless bump

Just got my mom a t430. Upgrading my RAM and CPU which I'll put in hers and it should be good for a few years.

Do her a favor and get her an upgraded screen

The Alienware M14x 1600x900 glossy screen is glossy but has great colors

I am considering it. I have the HD+ cable spare because I'm going to do the FHD upgrade on mine but I broke the screen and they are a bitch to source..

>prepping G40 for uni
>PCMCIA wlan adapter not recognized by system
>it IS recognized by wpa supplicant, but unusable
>test it on T500
>unrecognized hardware
>open adapter with screwdriver, pry open a small part
>piece of plastic shoots off and hits my eyeball
>notice small burnout under the metal shield around the part of the PCB that actually sends signals and shit
Fuck it, I'll just stick to my T60.

Have T580 getting blue screen and this error have 3 year waranty on it, should I wife the disk before sending it in?

Attached: 6C04204E-59BE-4CD9-8FA1-B1B8A62C82D1.jpg (4032x3024, 2.3M)

>should I wife the disk
if that's your fetish then sure why not

You should still bring your G40 user. That thing is a wonderful brick.

How's a dell latitude e6540 performance compared to a w540?

>E6540
Oh god that thing. Not good. While on paper it's CPU performance would be pretty much the same and it's GPU similar/slightly less, it's gimped HARD by having only a single cooling fan and heatsink for both.

Attached: housefire.jpg (1600x1071, 497K)

is it bad that i immediately lose any interest in a laptop when i see it has a U cpu? i've started to associate these with cost cutting and low build quality at all price ranges

Looking for something with a GPU for a few games and graphics/light video editing, any recommendations?

that's bad, saw one cheaper than a w540
seem like I will avoid it, since I had dell that got its graphic card burnt due shit cooling

Your best bet is an E580 with it's RX 550 dGPU or T580 with Nvidia MX dGPU both are comparable in terms of performance, if you want something faster your only option is the x1e with it's 1050ti.

Do not lewd the computer parts.

for the x220 wifi card user

My librebooted x60s makes noise when I play webm's/strain the processor is there fix for this?

Attached: think.jpg (2000x1500, 669K)

yea remove the cooler

Sounds like coil whine. There isn't really a fix.

Yeah I'm fucking retard&drunkard, but what I meant is that it sounds like coil whine and I think it appeared after I installed trannytboot and I think I read somewhere that you could mitigate the noise.

What's the best corebootable thinkpad for light gaming. Currently have an x250 but im looking to get something sort of comparable which can also run games.

my wife is starting to get mad

Attached: IMG_0473.jpg (4608x2639, 2.3M)

Is it stupid of me to buy 2 thinkpads? I want to get a T400 as a Stallman-ified computer, and then buy a brand new model that I can run Windows, Steam, Discord etc. on

w

why

You're right. I can find an Antheros USB wlan adapter on ebay or something and use that. I bet it'd make a good improvised weapon as well. There're too many rowdy druggies/bums/illegal immigrants around my uni and sometimes they wander onto campus and start shit. I'd love to smack one upside the head with it.

Attached: 1418149457285.gif (200x150, 395K)

I have a T60 (Intel T2400, 1.5 gigs) that I don't really use

I'm a CS major

Do you think that one could be productive on such an old machine? Maybe if I put an SSD with OpenBSD on it?

yeah if it's nothing too heavy

Are these any good?

fuck

Attached: 20190721_195916.jpg (1440x1080, 97K)

who has installed gentoo on their thinkpad

what'd you do user
luckily, the screen is easily replaceable

Instead of an SSD, buy a T7200 (around 2USD) and a 1GiB stick of RAM (price varies but shouldn't go over a few bucks) on eBay
If it's only for work and not watching HD videos/vidya, it'll work like a charm

Do you guys generally have luck on eBay buying ThinkPads without batteries and/or HDDs? I found a box of spare batteries in my closet that a friend gave me when I bought his X220 and it got me thinking a spare X220 or two wouldn't hurt.

I tried to install it once but I fucked up at some point in the middle and so I settled back on Xubuntu.

i was thinking about it. i imagine it'd probably overheat though, so i'll probably have to opt for setting up a binary host.

I have a x200 that won't power on. How do I go about trying to repair it?

it doesn't even POST?

where can i buy one of the super old blocky thinkpads like in the OP pic?

Ebay usually has many. They're pretty expensive there though. Craigslist or other local sites for cheaper usually.

kek you weren't kidding

ebay.com/itm/IBM-THINKPAD-360PE-2620-TOUCH-Flip-Screen-25-years-old/183849347474?epid=1335100083&hash=item2ace466992:g:ZrEAAOSwMKpUalKG

Only three of those have a tolerable screen
thickbads are a meme

nah, just won't even power on.

T520 I bought my brother. He swears he just woke up and it was like that. Where can I show him to buy a new screen?

i need advice. x201 i7-2.0 gz
vs
x230 i5 2.6gz.

W530 by far

Thoughts on the X1 Extreme with 4K screen?

Divorce her and wife your hard drive

Best thinkpad for light gaming like Java minecraft with a few mods and MTG Arena?
Max budget $440USD/$650NZD, buying in NZ but don't mind overseas.

Currently have i5 2520m x220 8gb ram, great for everything but light gaming.

I stepped on mine too, 900p time!

which thinkpad has the best battery life?
don't tell me x220, it sucks

Whatever the newest Lenovo™ ThinkPad® X1 Carbon© is

ok a cheap one now

I associate them with good battery life and cooler temperatures.

X230.

Check the models with dGPUs.

Where can i find a list of them?

Don't worry saw the wiki lol.

my t420s also makes this sound when I play a webm. (no coreboot or libreboot)

>buying a thinkpad for gayms
then just build a desktop for the same price of the brand new thinkpad

AliExpress worked well for me so far, check if there are IPS options for the W520

so i got my thinkpad x250, but unfortunately it has a 1366x768 or whatever resolution. Is it possible to get a 1080p panel for it? Or is replacing parts like this only doable for older models?

I have a T430 and I play some games on it no problem. I just got done playing CSGO (obviously at a low resolution and all low settings) and I played EDF: Insect Armaggedon yesterday. If you don't need le epic high graphics and shit you can run some good games on these things.

1080p will look way too small on that desu.

i think you might be right honestly. I guess i just have to get used to it, i haven't used laptops in many many years.

just get a cheap external screen for when you're at home.

I'm always at home

Attached: 2b1a60064ed65b119d0eb0e6c397fa45-imagepng.png (734x734, 6K)

so why the fuck do you need a laptop? actually, scratch that - i'm the same. I just like the fact that I can bring it to bed or and shit. it's comfy.
anyway, get a cheap BenQ external screen and plug that VGA in, it works great.

I even have a really good desktop. I just wanted a comfy machine for brousing and bousting on imageboards.

Does anyone have the pic of the molten but working W520?

Yes it is. The X250 has a display whitelist unfortunately, which means that on sole displays, you won't be able to change brightness in Windows. You can either use Linux, use a whitelist display, or use a hack to bypass the whitelist (it seems pretty involved).

>sole
some*
Here's how to remove the whitelist:

frick thinkpads

Attached: dimitri-ciggy.webm (854x480, 752K)

Lenovo's website is the biggest piece of shit I've ever used in my entire life.

Whatever the newest X series your poor unemployed ass can afford

That's why you have a ThinkPad. Screen replacement is a ten minute operation.

>wife
of course, user

so from your post i understand that to when changing the panel brightness wont work on windows.

is that really it, and linux solves it? if thats the case then for linux users there is no drawbacks yes?

or are there displays that can be used that are "allowed" by the system, if there is does anybody know which ones.

i would love to know my options

Attached: 1545632684968.png (500x500, 215K)

That whitelist seems to only restrict brightness control under windows, yes. So it wouldn't be a problem if you use linux.

thanks for the info, i was getting worried ill be stuck in the 1366 realm forever, i need my ips rez for maximum comf when browsing 4chinz -and chinese cartoons-

Attached: gatcu.jpg (720x719, 47K)

I don't have enough space in my house for a desktop computer, so a laptop is the best I can do

I don't need a high-end computer, I just don't want to only have a computer from 2008 that'll crash from just trying to run portal or something on it (not to imply I'd be intentionally running any proprietary software on my Stallman-ified thinkpad)

Hi everyone. I want to use my ''22 monitor as the screen. Is there a guide for removing the top part of thinkpad and leaving just the base conneced via VGA with the screen?

>Our apologies, traffic continues to be high and requests are taking longer than expected. Please continue to hold here and your page will load as soon as traffic allows.
Fucking hell, I've been trying to buy a laptop from Lenovo for 14 hours and the page is STILL fucked.
Just going for an XPS at this point.

what is some good budget thinkcentre

>Internal Server Error - Read
For fuck's sake.

>We seem to be experiencing site issues.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

How retard friendly is X230 corebooting with Heads?

Holy shit why didn't anybody tell me debian was so comfy? I finally got off ubuntu and switched to debian 10 and I couldn't be happier! I can run palemoon with multiple tabs open, soulseek and mopidy+ncmpcpp all at once in under 800mb of ram.

>Our apologies, traffic continues to be high and requests are taking longer than expected. Please continue to hold here and your page will load as soon as traffic allows.
Still not able to give them $3000, 15 hours later.

Got an HP elitebook 840 G5 at work.

My X200 seems puny compared to it.

In 2-ish years, they will be sold, what price should I pay for it? They'll be selling shit in December, too, so I'm curious what will be available.

Worry about that in 2 years user.

fyi, I have a t420 with integrated graphics, can play most if not all games up until 2011.
I like it because many xp era games are difficult to run on newer machines, but with windows 7 you can play them just fine.

I have a t440p but sometimes while I work in a program I accidentally enter into overtype mode where while typing it writes over the following characters. Is there a way to exit this mode?
On my previous laptop I'd just press 0 on numpad but that's not working here. Any ideas?

has anyone had any success with the ChinkPad upgrade? I really want to try it but it sounds too sketchy.

Attached: tzuyu_0049.jpg (1000x1500, 254K)

Minecraft isn't light gaming. You need a good cpu and a large memory

T400 Screen goes black when i open the laptop... it works when it is like a quarter open which is obviously useless..

Is this a common issue and an easy fix?

thanks

I only had success with smashing insect lovers like you with my steel bat.

insert key you dummy

what are you referring to?

Does anyone have instructions on how to upgrade the X200's original screen to an AFFS screen?

Thoughts on huawei matebook d14?
