imagine if the anime eyes were located on the forehead of the character. you'd think it looks idiotic, plainly incorrect, not even stylistic. there's a difference between artistic license and drawing things that are literally nonsensical and contrary to very basic anatomy, you know?

It looks OK if you add in shadows to add depth to the mouth so it looks 3D.

But it serves a very basic purpose. A side mouth makes it easily noticeable when a character is speaking in profile, especially since anime characters tend to miss any jaw movement.

No, but I want to see that the characters is looking up. This easy to accomplish by making them tilt their head. A speaking mouth, in profile and without jar movement, on the other hand is very difficult to discern. You'd only have the lip movement.

I would compare the side mouth to movement lines or sweat/pulsing veins on the back of a character's head. Something you wouldn't see in reality, but which is there to clearly indicate what is happening to the user.
