just inventoried my new t540p
4 gigs of ram (upgraded it to 8)
i5 processor. need to order an i7 for it. trying to find one for $50-60
has 1 hdd 500 gig. might stick with it or put in an ssd. probably rip out the odd drive and put and relocate the hdd there.

did not come with nvidia graphics card on it but it does have an intel 4600 so not shabby.

i want to upgrade the trackpad. i want buttons dammit. dunno about upgrading the keyboard.

There's no point to get an i7 if you're getting a dual core. Only the quad cores are a significant enough upgrade, but the 4702mq and 4712mq which are 37w tdp (so it doesn't melt your dick/desk) are 150$ on ebay.

SSDs are cheap as fuck right now. an ADATA SU650 or Patriot Burst are like 50$ for 480gb. rated for >500 write cycles.

My workplace is sending me to some sort "camp" in September.

Keep in mind we're a marketing company and I don't do anything with development or IT. I mostly just work with the Adobe suite. Anyways this camp requires a Windows laptop. The said I can't use bootcamp on my Mac for this (unsure why but whatever) Is there a thinkpad I could nab for less than $300 that isn't a dinosaur or will crap out on me?

T430 im working on not displaying anything, but does power on after being plugged in. the power button doesn't seem to do much besides maybe power it on if the cpu fan stops spinning shortly after startup.

any ideas before i order up a new mobo?

Is the x230 worth the extra money? I’m strapped for cash due to saving up for another laptop, but I intend to use it as a secondary machine for imageboards, a bit of youtube, anime torrenting and watching (720p), IRC, discord, typing, 8/16-bit emulation, mostly on Lunix. Is there any significant reason to go with the x230 over the x220 for this? I multitask a lot so I’ll have many windows open but I intend to get 8 or 16 of RAM soon enough and an SSD immediately.

You can get a W540 pretty cheap nowadays. Use that. Too bad that you have to use PajeetOS on it, though.

the best gpu u can get on a T440 is a 730M with half the performance of the GT 950M that's in 2015 Pavillions, so if you care about 3d performance get a new battery.

Can confirm, got a old Dell Studio with a Core 2 Duo T5750 and browsing feels like shit and it can't run youtube over 720p and striggles with 1080p mkv.

They weigh about the same or more than my T430.
You get a smaller screen no docking ability.
Its a Thinkpad branded Chromebook that Lenovo made to try to get into the school computer market. It has a big red led indicator on the back so that teacher can see that you are working.
Its not a thinkpad. its a heavy chromebook/kidschool computer with a kinda good keyboard and clitmouse.

budget isn't an factor, i'm not buying it because its cheap, im buying because i want to tinker and build my own tailored machine. don't need a gpu, but i wouldn't mind a nice screen. was having in mind replacing the screen to IPS first thing. plan to use it mainly for tinkering with hardware, installing gentoo, and some programming, as for high demand tasks i already have a high end dell xps

If you wanna tinker with it, keep in mind none of the X series allow cpu upgrades, and the T/W series only allows cpu upgrades on the t440p/w540

It depends where you are, they are cheaper in US or Canada. In EU for used from private seller, you can expect 250-350EU for an i7, 8gb ram, and dGPUl. Over 400 is overpriced territory and you should expect to get warranty on it from a refurb shop.

how much more cheaper is it in canada? A friend goes there to study for a year soon so maybe he could send it back to me in germany for less or you know bring it with him when he comes back

That screen is shit, but for 135 it's ok as long as everything works. You'd want to immediately upgrade the RAM to at least 8gb, and put an SSD in (new, decent ADATA SU650 (not SU630 those are QLC) or Patriot Burst is 35eu for 240gb, 50 for 480gb).
You can upgrade the CPU, but 4c/8t ones are expensive, especially the ones who won't melt your laptop. 2c/4t i7 is not worth the hassle.

Yes, but you might as well use the HP as a desktop plugged in, or sell it depending on how much you could get. Also check if it’s RAM and drive(s) are soldered or not

I need something that's relatively fast by modern standards, has a good battery, a keypad and around $300-$500. I don't need it to run video games.

t400 and t/w500 had them standard. after those models they were optional spec for a while. the t420 had a slot on the rear where you could have either a firewire port or a modem. im not as familiar with the rest of the product line after that.

I do what you do on an x220 with 16gb ram and a an ssd, it works great. 1080p playback works like a charm.

After flashing the bios, T420 doesn't boot anymore. No beep code, hard drive spins, hotkeys like mute, caps lock, and thinklight seem to work but there's no picture, no sound, etc.

turning off bluetooth might help, i've had a lot of laptops where the bluetooth interferes with wifi connectivity
