The less RAM you waste the more can get used for disk cache to speed it up.

Ubuntu is fine, just works. If you like Budgie, more power to you. I find it's pretty unfinished and missing a lot of features, like Window Preview Overview of GNOME or KDE. I think Ubuntu Budgie ships skippy-xd with a hot corner for this reason, but it's a pretty hacky solution.
