I suggest you don't switch over unless there's absolutely no choice. Windows 10 sucks total balls. It's interface is atrocious. You have to do a lot of configuration and registry edits to make it tolerable.

I did XP. When service packs were flawed for my systems I would go to linux exclusively until the flaws were fixed and XP was usable again.

if you can be vocal about it, maybe you can convince hardware and software developers to support windows 7, but either way you'll be fine forever, you computer won't just stop working

DXVK and proton have made it stupidly easy to run a plethora of games. All I ever hear about linux involves a shitty interface with no real logic behind finding stuff, broken drivers or none at all, gaming (which is absolutely important but has improved lately), niche software is usually windows only and when it's linux only I have a VM. The idea of having to use the command line to do menial shit is dumb and I say this as a programmer. Outside of those I just like windows 7. I don't want to switch to something that's "okay I guess" I want to actually like it and the OS that does that now is windows 7. Once that goes fully then I have no idea. The only thing that'll really stop me is when hardware stops working on it.

user, you DON'T need to use the command line for anything on just werks distros. This is such a strange perspective since I even used the terrible powershell from Windows from time to time. niggaboontu and fedora offer just werks solution for the average user(leaning more towards Ubuntu on that part). I can understand the frustration over DEs, but let's not kid ourselves: Windows is just as bad if not worse than the leading Linus DEs. This is why I advocate on dual booting: do almost everything on Linux and then consider your Windows drive for specific niches you can't tackle.

Checked. I’m right there with you. I like doing stuff with GUI instead. The mouse was invented, that means we don’t have to fuck around in vim and cli anymore if possible. That being said I use the terminal a lot and I have WSL with Xming so I can use Linux on windows anyway.

actually on the issue of drivers lets run through that
for graphics tablets and dacs windows needs you to install the drivers. manjaro for examle has them working straight out the box. for graphics drivers its the very first setting. all you do is a click a single button and your good to go. on windows the self install driver is not that easy (not sayinf its not easy, saying not AS easy) to get to and from memory it tends to have issues unless you dl it direct from nvidias site (which unless you keep an eye out will try to install all that geforce experience crap).

Also on a different note windows file explorer is absolute crap compared to dolphin. multi tabbing, dark mode since forever, can setup transfer options and stopping, faster and smoother, easy universal or seperate zoom options and much more

Software will eventually use the win10 extensions and thus be "broken" if run on win7. I've had software that I wanted to run but couldn't on win7. So the day is coming as some software won't have effort and cost spent on rewriting a less functional win7 version as part of the transparent install package.

My main laptop (17.3 inch nice display) is in great shape, so I am unwilling to junk it just because it has an old win7 64-bit on it. After the Sad Panda site announced it was closing down, I wanted to download and hoard files. So I looked into some software that would help me catalogue and maintain searchable tags and categories for large numbers of media items.

One such free software is LanRagi which will even scan the website and read the tabs for use with the downloaded gallery image file sets. But it is windows 10 due to use of features available only in win10.
