It is also important to note, that even though today the world is very globalized, it wasn't so much back then.
What I mean is, the average kid from the US in 2002 had a PS2, but the average kid from Argentina or Russia had a Famiclon, a few more lucky ones had a PS1, and the kid who had a PS2 was God, known by 10 blocks around as "that rich kid with a PS2".
This happened not only with videogames, but technology in general and even some trends, so that russian kid from 96 might have had a very similar childhood than an 86 kid from the US.
The generations thing isn't so straightforward.

I was born in '95 and I don't mind having started off my experience with computers with Windows Millenium Edition and starting vidya with the Nintendo 64/PS1/GBA and not having many memories of the SNES/NES/Genesis. I mean I've played them but I didn't grow up with them. Having more experience with polygons instead of pixels growing up probably helped me get the hang of my 3D archviz modeling job, and I will torment you with my RGB lighting until I die.
