If you're thinking of the Hindenberg, the fire was confined to the outer envelope. The hydrogen gas escaped vertically into the atmosphere.
A Zeppelin is not a Blimp. It has a rigid structure and the hydrogen/helium is contained in cells within the frame. A Blimp is just a big party balloon.
