Pango 1.44 removes support for bitmap fonts

> Using Harfbuzz for font loading means that we will lose support for bitmap and type1 fonts. We think this is an acceptable trade-off, but others might disagree.

Now what do I post in desktop threads?

why do these faggots keep breaking shit? fuck, and awesome uses pango too. what a bunch of fags

>gnome devs btfo ricefags yet again
Based footfags. This will literally affect no one other than autistic desktop posters.

Does it affect me in any way?

Isn't that the library by the guy who just got kicked from github for being iranian?

Huh... so I guess rollback? Surely someone will come up with a solution, right???

It will affect GTK applications if you use any.

How? Elaborate, I don't understand, thought fonts are controlled by desktop environment. Won't plasma just force some fonts on GTK applications?

Attached: 1543157821407.jpg (1263x1920, 816K)

Pango is a text rendering and layout library.
>Won't plasma just force some fonts on GTK applications?
Yes, which is why things break when Pango can't render said font anymore.

So THIS........is the year of...........linux desktop....................

Must be done. They are getting ready for Retina fonts

Oh god... Why they make things worse? why they decided to use harfbuzz despite making things break?
There's a good reason for it, right..?

>lose support for bitmap and type1 fonts
Lose support or remove
Either way who uses this crap anyways?

Holy fucking shit fuck this garbage I hate GNOME, I *only* use bitmap fonts.

Guess I'll have to rewrite my terminal emulator to use a different rendering library.

It supposedly has some pretty big upsides.

based Gnome single-handedly purging autists from Linux community

I'm becoming increasingly convinced that there's some MS agents in GNOME's office.

>better placement of lines and glyphs, subpixel positioning, better space handling
He forgot to mention you need to use a not-yet-released version of Cairo from git unless you like fucked up spacing:

gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/pango/issues/390
gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/pango/issues/385

>Windows still supports bitmap fonts
>Linux doesn't support anymore
MS wins

Is there a single good gui toolkit on windows?

I haven't found a single one which doesn't suck.

No wonder something was a bit off after the latest update and boot into Awesome-wm.

Attached: here_i_go_pacman.jpg (811x754, 105K)

Doesn't this now mean that standard Xterm settings wont work?

In a better way since pango 1.44 has many improvements

Xterm doesn't use pango for text rendering.

No, since XTerm doesn't use Pango.

Perhaps when the relevant Cairo update comes out, but for the time being it's shit, see

This wouldn't be an issue if you weren't using arch

True, but only because other distros haven't yet adopted this version. Besides, I've already downgraded, so it's not an issue for me either.

Win32

IS THAT WHY TERMINUS IS FUCKED UP?? REEE

>helping someone get printer working over wifi in ubuntu

>turns out printer driver defaults to lowest uid with sudo privileges in absence of root account
>no way to change this
>had to nuke the other account before I could login
yeah, it'll never happen. no way a normie would get through that.

thank god our Arch Insiders are alpha testing things for /us/

its called The Filter

I have no problems with it as a power user, but when the most normie friendly distro requires you to jump through such hoops for something so basic, it really shows you how far the linux desktop is for the vast majority of users.

>for the vast majority of users
The Filter does not discriminate. It exists. It filters.

Great news, user.
Everything is SNAFU now.
Moved from sakura (libvte) to mlterm. Now things do work again, and I get a major cut in latency while at it.

The 2nd time I see someone else here use mlterm. Nice.

i was wondering why my terminal was fucked. is there any way to use bitmap fonts properly anymore?

...

Welcome to the gnome 'ecosystem'.

why was that comment removed lol? its not even archived but it's on gitmemory

god i want to lick that so bad

>t.entitled freetard

>emacs doesn't use pango
Thank fuck. I can live with blurry fonts in my wm but not in my text editor.

What is going on with that snake's jaw? Is he alright?

>not printing your paper remotely across the school VPN on the department's printer and then simply picking it up when you show up to turn it in

bruh I hope you don't actually buy your own ink/toner cartridges too. Why would you pay to print shit when you're already paying tuition?

My school actually charged for printing. Something absurd like 10 cents a page.

Although to be fair, I dunno if you're American, but my full tuition was about 40k, whereas I know that can be a year at an American college.

you can go to school in burgerlandia for much less than that, unless you insist on a gucci private school or something.

I don't really understand what the use case for Gnome is even supposed to be. If your computer is such an ancient potato that it's not worth shelling out for a Windows license, then you should probably be running like Bunsenlabs or something. Maybe LXDE at _most_.

Can someone explain why people use gnome software at all.
All of their libraries seem like garbage, their documentation is absolutely terrible, the gnome devs act like entitled whiny cunts, randomly break things for no good reason, and ask other library maintainers to kowtow to asinine demands.
The only developers who would willingly use their libraries are cunts who think how they act is okay, which means they agree with them, and thus all software based off of gnome libraries is equally as retarded and poorly designed.

and yet for some reason gnome software actually has a userbase
i don't understand

Glad to see other mlterm users and excellent input latency (also uses less ram than urxvt). Literally the only terminal in the world that takes internationalization seriously with the only correct BiDi implementation, complete CJK encoding support and the ability to display vertical RTL text. Have been my only terminal for long.

bitmap font faggots BTFO

Will this affect cairo+pango too? Why are GN*ME developers the cancer that has been ruining linux in the last decades?

I just wish it would handle copy-pasting better.

Reminder GNOME devs are incompetent and that you should always use XFCE or KDE.
gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/issues/374

This affects XFCE as well.

Everything where Pango is used.

Why don't you use st? Did you have a better experience with mlterm?

I tried it, but I didn't like the default experience and the patches I wanted to apply would've required me to adapt them to the newest release (or at least a common release).
I also like some of mlterm's "bloat" like the GUI settings editor or the ability to compile it with native Wayland support.

use pngquant

>lossy
No, thanks. Only if the PNG is larger than 4MB (and even then pingo is better for high quality lossy optimization).

Attached: 1.png (1333x620, 92K)

How so I see if my system has any bitmapped fonts? (AFAIK I haven't used any since the 90s)
