I predict that Microsoft will sell Windows off some time in the next couple of years. The desktop is a dying market and in order for Microsoft to grow they need to distance themselves from it as they progress their balls deeper in to AI and .net and other memes. There isn't a lot left you can do with a consumer desktop OS as they discovered with Windows 8. Either Windows will branch off in to it's own separate company like Blackberry did, or it's going to get sold to a company like Amazon who seem to be in the business of buying anything they can.
>but you need Windows to do all these things
perhaps right now in this moment but they're working hard to get away from that. They may maintain an environment for developers but the average consumer's need for a laptop or desktop is dwindling.
Or just open source it and let the community take over
Elijah Harris
people have been claiming the desktop is a dying market for like 15 years now.
Cooper Perez
It's a good thing predictions are free.
Charles Carter
>99.99% of businesses use windows and office >desktop dying >anytime this century Mobile has a better chance of dying if some new meme technology comes along to displace it.
Kayden Myers
Though laptops do have a massive presence in the consumer market, businesses have always stuck to a majority desktop system. That alone will keep it up and running. There are also many "power users" who opt for the performance and versatility of desktops over laptops and phones.
The operating systems themselves are hit or miss. They seemed to have learned their lesson with Windows 8 and 8.1 and have shifted back to a Windows 7 and earlier outlook. Windows 10 as it is is pretty much a rolling release type deal, similar to Arch GNU/Linux. Windows Server has stagnated slightly, but as things progress that can only get simpler and more efficient. There is simply no competition in that regard, even considering home brewed systems.
Dylan Lopez
and it's been dying for like 10.
what could your desktop computer do now that your computer 10 years ago could not?
Jeremiah Watson
what could your laptop do now that your laptop 10 years ago could not?
Carson Rogers
How come the military doesn't need a state of the art video card to take over the world? Serious question. Wouldn't they benefit from modern hardware & software?
I've seen multiple articles about how modern day drones are flown with old windows XP laptops.
What basic principle of function or design (excluding software) could your 2009 iPhone 3G do that your modern phone cant.
Zachary Wood
so we're in agreement then?
Parker Johnson
it's a closed ship network you dumb fuck they can run anything they want
Nathan Phillips
you don't replace something that just werks
Brody Ross
Simple. The cost and labor associated with retrofitting every in service plane and planned plane with new systems, along with the training needed to teach the operators how to use it. As it is now, there are thorough training procedures for the operation and every manual out there is based on these systems.
Zachary Martin
Muh AI won't be a thing until 80 years more at least
Colton Gomez
"balls deep" means it's as deep as it gets. In order to go any deeper the balls would have to come off, defeating the purpose.
Military needs stable, tested, rock solid reliability. New stuff is just putting lives at risk.
Jason Long
lmao you're legitimately retarded
Josiah Campbell
>The desktop is a dying market and in order for Microsoft to grow they need to distance themselves from it did you ever walk into an office? have you ever seen people doing office jobs?
Landon Howard
You have never had a big boy job where Microsoft come and audit your licenses. When you get one of these, and have to update your PER CORE licenses, youll know how MS make money off Windows.
Henry Sanders
>excluding software That's fucking stupid, by that logic any Turing complete computer is the same as any other in "basic function and design"
>what can your desktop PC do that ENIAC couldn't do if you left it sitting long enough? checkmate siliconfags
Nicholas Watson
Have you ever fucking worked in an office?
Angel Adams
>You have never had a big boy job where Microsoft come and audit your licenses I've never seen that happen (though I'm not in the US). Care to elaborate? Couldn't you just tell them to fuck off at the door?
Josiah Cruz
>what can your desktop PC do that ENIAC couldn't do if you left it sitting long enough? checkmate siliconfags creating copypasta
Joseph Ward
>Couldn't you just tell them to fuck off at the door? Are you actually fucking retarded? Do you seriously think telling one of the largest companies in the fucking world to just fuck off is going to go well for you? Given you seem to not realise you agreed to this the second you installed Windows? Youve never read our EULA?
Josiah Barnes
>Youve never read our EULA? Of course not, I don't use Windows at home so why should I?
>Do you seriously think telling one of the largest companies in the fucking world to just fuck off is going to go well for you? Again, I'm not in the US, so my perspective is likely quite different from yours. American corporatism is rather insane compared to what you'll find elsewhere in the world.
Nathan King
>Again, I'm not in the US Nor am i.
Hunter Wright
>American corporatism the EULA applies even in your bingobongoland most surely you are just clueless about it since you work in fast food or some similar low skilled job, correct?
Asher Lopez
>the EULA applies even in your bingobongoland Then please cite specific examples of companies getting in legal trouble for not allowing Microsoft's stooges to sniff around their building in countries other than the USA/Canada/UK/etc.
>most surely you are just clueless about it since you work in fast food or some similar low skilled job, correct? I work as an aerospace engineer.
Jack Davis
It host all their software as a service, no reason to sell it. $MS has made bank in the last few quarters thanks to SaaS
Oliver Hill
>The desktop is a dying market lol, the absolute state of new Jow Forums
Are you completely daft? Or just utterly clueless about the aerospace world outside of Boeing/Lockheed Martin/GE/Pratt & Whitney?
John Powell
the office is a dead meme. You can run MS office from the browser now. Also businesses only upgrade when shit is beyond repair. Just go into any hospital or retail or restaurants or schools. They all run ancient dells or lenovos or HPs.
everybody outside of US pirates windows so MS barely profits from the OS sales anymore, so they made it into adware.
It's gonna die soon Jim and there's nothing we can do about it.
Even despite growing economies in developing markets, worldwide PC sales have a clear year over year decline.
Smartphones have pretty much destroyed laptop and desktop sales and growth. The decline is irreversible and anyone with any foresight is evacuating either to the cloud or to the app stores.
no, you're retarded zoomer, no serious man does his IT work on a fucking phone. you're confusing youtube clicks stats with real life.
Aaron White
Laptop sales are actually up, Chromebooks have just been a meme
Matthew Reyes
This is exactly what Microshit has been doing since Windows 8 and exactly why they are currently suffering. They are not a cloud services company, they're not an AI company, they're a Windows company. That's all they'll ever be, and almost every other service they provide is basically an accessory to that in some way.
The sooner Microsoft stops pretending they'll ever be something they're not, the better for us all.
Adam Stewart
Microsoft made $125 billion this year. in what universe are they suffering or making failing products?!
Joseph Harris
>You can run MS office from the browser now. Doesn't mean anyone does it, nor does it mean anyone really wants to. If you've ever done any real work beyond shitting out the occasional double spaced essay in Word you'd understand that.
The market for desktop and laptop PCs is certainly contracting as Moore's Law continues to slow and idiots like you realize that smartphones and tablets are more fitting to your basic use cases, but they're not going away. People enjoy having things like big monitors, proper multitasking and the luxury of not breaking their arms fucking around with low-density interfaces on a shitty touch screen all day. The only retards who think proper computers are going away are the ones who never needed them to begin with.
Landon Roberts
>Military needs stable, tested, rock solid reliability In other words they already have knowledge of existing bugs and quirks and can work around them
>microsoft >suffering Azure is a cash cow, Windows is up compared to the greater PC market, they are not suffering abit The fact that Microsoft has it's hands in so much is the reason they stay afloat as good as they do Microsoft could lose relevance in many markets and survive, you can't say that about other big tech companies, if Google lost ad revenue they would sink as nothing else is profitable
Jace Morales
lower latency and lag, none of that gay aero vsync crap.
Kevin Martinez
fun fact, office 365 is one of MSs biggest growing segments
shit is adopted in droves by schools and businesses. The fact that you can type away on a smarphone helps.
also get a bigger smartphone if your thumbs are too thick to hit anything
Ryder Garcia
You don't need to tell me, because unlike you I actually use 365. On a real computer. Neither I nor anyone else who actually needs Office to do their job is working exclusively from the crappy web app or an iShit toy through a software keyboard, we're all using the desktop client that allows us to do all of the aforementioned things and more that no mobileshit trash will ever do competently.
Dylan Bailey
>fun fact, office 365 is one of MSs biggest growing segments
>shit is adopted in droves by schools and businesses.
Not only those, it seems normies and boomers somehow love being milked with the subscription system
Lucas Carter
Because Microshit forces it on us.
Logan Garcia
>Microshit forces it on us. you can buy a office key for a couple bucks, you braindead cattle prefer to pay for SOFTWARE YOU DO NOT OWN because you're cattle
Simpler technologies are harder to infiltrate. This is why the US government still uses floppy disks.
Camden Lee
it's being forced because normalfags constantly lose their document files
Lucas Thomas
Man, you really are a fucking idiot. Come back when you turn 18.
Xavier Kelly
this guy fucks
Henry White
>Come back when you turn 18. funny you should say that, since only zoomies and fat fucking old faggots are okay with the subscription system
which one are you
Matthew Moore
Neither, because in the real world your employer deals with that shit and you don't have to care.
Eli Hughes
Yeah, I'm sure Microsoft will sell of their most well known product.
Alexander Bailey
>your employer deals with that shit if your employer pays for it why the fuck are replying to a comment that's talking about personal use faggot?
Cooper Jenkins
Because you're butting into an argument that had nothing to do with you or your toddler use case nobody (including Microsoft) gives a fuck about.
Jayden Gray
I doubt they'd sell it, at least any time soon. Windows achieves multiple goals: 1. Raw profits, Windows still brings Microsoft money (and also it's not dying, in Q3 2019, Windows OEM revenue was up 9%, while Windows commercial revenue increased 18%), and the More Personal Computing group (Windows, Xbox, Surface) brings a third of total revenue, 2. Diversifying revenue (like Facebook is desperately trying to do and failing miserably), 3. Increasing adoption of other services and tools, such as Office 365, and from the development side of things, .NET and Visual Studio (although .NET has moved away from being Windows only). And also there's Surface. And those are just the most obvious reasons.
Liam Turner
so basically you cannot read and you fucked up, why not admit to that instead of doubling down? Pathetic fuck
Leo Jackson
Lol. You're the one who started spouting irrelevant shit in an argument you didn't bother to read first. Fuck off, toddler.
Brody Nguyen
Please learn the english language rajeesh:
Cameron Hughes
Yes, read your own post and notice how you interjected into a discussion with some apparently irrelevant shit nobody gives a fuck about. Just admit you're a retard and move on.
Connor Ward
>with some apparently irrelevant shit which you responded to as if on topic
stop digging, you're already at the bottom bro just move on
>i-it's your fault I can't read! Seriously, just shut the fuck up already.
Gabriel Roberts
Desktop Computing is never going to die, it just won't be popular for the general population.
General population is just gonna end up with phones that connect to monitors basically the Samsung Dex.
Josiah Smith
That literally does not mean it's a dying market. A plateau is not the death of a business, it just means they need to diversify, which Microsoft has finally done in the past five years.
Cell phones haven't evolved or improved at all since they went slate, they're still super important financially and practically.
Eli Mitchell
Then they tell you your computers won't work anymore, and a notice goes up in all Windows machines that they are no longer genuine with a 30 day period to make them genuine or they won't work.
Duh.
This has, really, been common knowledge for anyone who uses a computer since XP came out.
Carter Walker
>[cell phones are] still super important financially and practically Fucking how? They're just tracking devices and antiprivacy garbage meant to make your life worse. We would be infinitely better off without them.
Parker Perez
What a stupid comment, that has nothing to do with the fact that they haven't changed in almost a decade but the whole industry collectively makes hundreds of millions per day.
Austin Watson
>phones don't have any utility! Idiot. If you're going to try to make compelling arguments you'd be a hell of a lot better at it if you didn't purposefully ignore nuance.
