- update only using sudo zypper dup
- you don't have to use YaST (GUI or ncurses)
- packages are tested by automated QA and by humans later
- packages are not mindlessly updated: if a dev made a fucky wucky they stall until it's fixed
- go with kde, a lot of suse devs are also kde devs
