Raptor Talos II

Raptor Talos II
So did anyone actually buy one? What are you doing with it? What was setup like? What distro are you running?

I know some of you trust fund neets posted invoices lets see those boxes.

WE ARE BUT MAGGOTS
WRIIIIIIITHING IN THE FILTH

nice try NSA

>So did anyone actually buy one?
No, because...
>What are you doing with it?
...there's nothing to do on it aside from moving around icons on the desktop of whatever OS you install and oh yeah you can browse web that's right but so can you on a raspberry pi

mining monero in a country with free electricity

I'm getting a Blackbird, it's going to be my desktop. I'll use it for programming, video transcoding, Blender, and browsing

I would buy a sbc in the $200 or so dollar range to mess around with. But I would rather get an fpga dev board.

You can't play games on it, so nu-Jow Forums won't care.

>games
You can't really do anything on them outside of developing for the platform.
>pay a cucked price for platform
>need to spend free time developing for platform
Yea. I wonder why people passed on such a gem.

You could probably run any x86 game on Qemu with pci pass-trough and call it a day.
Autists on the ppc thread managed to run Windows 7 on an old Mac so the Talos should do better

Thanks for the warning bro

>could probably
Is anyone willing to confirm?

No, because that's retarded. What the fuck are you going to play on a software x86 emulator? Quake?

Yeh because who'd have a hobby like that

I wished I had the money to afford it but "Starting at 6k USD" for my eastern-european budget sounds more like a used car auction I might be interested in rather than a computer system with a novelty architecture.

Truth be told I did buy a car for 6100 USD four months ago.

It's proprietary now?

Proprietary software pays employees to work for them while you pay to work on Talos.

I've seen a few claim to own these, some of them are probably full of shit because if you press them they can't even get the prices right, others are basically using them as $6,000 Facebook machines with a small minority of them pretending to be kernel developers or similarly forcing themselves to find something low-level enough that they can actually get a different experience out of these systems from any x86 machine running an equivalent distro.

So are these things even fully foss? Last I heard the network interface still required a binary blob.

too expensive.
i use 40$ thinkpad laptop

both Intel and particularly AMD mine much more efficiently

>video transcoding
stop, encoding absolutelly needs assembly and noby wrote or is ging to write power9 assembly. Also the SIMD is just 128bit while both Ryzen 3000 ad Intelhave 256bit which gives big boosts.

pfor the price of this crap you can easilly afford R9 3950X, oe threadripper 3000 if you want to wait

never get non-x86 for multimedia

no one on Jow Forums has any high-performance computing needs other than playing games and even if you did, x86 is cheaper since no one here has requirements that would make the alleged security benefits of the Talos worthwhile

lots have the kind of autism that makes them them think they do

I'll bet it's still going to be faster than the quad-core Piledriver A8 shitter I'm currently using

Athlon 200GE often is, for multimedia.
Pretty harsh - at least it beats A8-9600 which I briefly looked into getting.

If you want an IGPU, I recommend Ryzen 5 3400G or Ryzen 5 2400G in discounts (can go for much less and should not be much slower, so that one is a deal - R5 3400G has better cooler though, and is soldered - boon for quiet cooling).

Look at the shitshow in Dav1d (AV1 decoding, so not even decoder lol) here phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=blackbird-power9-4c&num=3

Or the shitshow in x264 here: phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=power9-talos-2&num=2

And don't trust the Raptor Shills when they say "it's getting better" and "community will fix it". Writing hand-tuned assembly for all multimedia encoders and decoders or filters is massive task and people aren't going to do it for free. Some tried it against bounties, but those end up droplets in ocean, also they often don'T know what they are doing so their SIMD is bad and yields fraction of the peroformance SSE4 or AVX2 routines.

Protip: Raptor Engineering guys on Twitter and Phoronix forums are quite full of shit, take care with those astroturfing shills.

But it's best i you don't need integrated graphics - Ryzen 3700X is great for encoding and Ryzen 3600 is a mainstream steal/king for that.

I'm not interested in x86 suggestions, I'm getting a Blackbird. If it's really that bad, I've got a dual quad-core Opteron server I can pull out

That software x86 emulator is capable of passing through physical PCI devices as demonstrated by Linus Sebastian inventor of the Linux kernel.

>my eastern-european budget
Polski broski?

It's weird to me that you're still stuck on a faildozer machine given how keen you are on wasting money.

MASTERS PLEASE I NEED MY BARELY PERCEIVABLE GAINS IN PERFORMANCE
I'LL GIVE YOU MY MORALS FOR A DISCOUNT

It's just something I threw together so I'd actually have a computer in the neat case I bought
>how keen you are on wasting money.
I don't see how buying a computer I've been looking forward to coming out for years is wasting money

>MY BARELY PERCEIVABLE GAINS IN PERFORMANCE
>dude never got closer to multimedia than opening pornhub
but knows everything about freedumz and securuty, kek

anyway people who do know a thing or two warned you, now you are on your own, kids

>I don't see how buying a computer I've been looking forward to coming out for years is wasting money
Value's always in the eye of the beholder... but really, what are you actually looking forward to? You're just going to do the *exact same* things you can already do better on an x86 machine with the same distro, in the *exact same* ways, and, with the different off-the-shelf CPU buried under a big heatsink and several hundred layers of abstraction notwithstanding, pretty much the *exact same* components. I've never seen a purpose for these systems from the perspective of a hobbyist. They're almost insultingly boring, and a poor value on top of it.

Honestly I just find it neat that alternatives still exist in a market that's essentially 100% x86. I've been looking forward to a machine like the Talos II ever since Apple switched to Intel. Plus I've wanted to learn POWER ASM for years and prefer doing things like that on real hardware. It's not just about POWER, either. I'm getting an 8-core Lemote mini-ITX system too.

Loongson is pretty hardcore. It's a fine hobby, I'm just warning that encoding and multimedia are about the worst case you an come up with for alternative ISAs. Putting aside those gayms that re a given.
