Linux is FUCKING SHIT. Just look at the struggle taking place here: forums.macrumors.com/threads/making-g3s-and-radeon-graphics-great-again.2191877/

The problems stems from the fact that the Linux kernel is not developed with older hardware in mind. If they make a change that breaks functionality on old hardware (KMS) they don't give a fuck.

Libre hardware laptop when?

Likely never. The POWER laptop thing is vapoware.

I like vaporwave

Why did CPUs stop being made in ceramic packages?

Attached: 1024px-intel_i486_dx_50mhz_2007_03_27[1].jpg (510x342, 39K)

I don't know enough about kernel shit to know what this means, but I want to do it so I can get better performance. How?

Thermals

Busybox is fine for a base distribution, but gnu is much better for interactive use so you should include it as an optional package.

Does it need any update?
Isn't it in it's endstate?

We're referring to Debian Ports Sid ITT. It is currently maintained, and up to date.

>linux is bad because they don't cater to making it especially for my ancient antique overheating garbage toys

porting to older operating systems, libraries etc. can be pretty fucking annoying, probably even more than just porting a solid modern base over.

OP, I told you in the last thread. You can easily find a way better xeon cheese grater mac pro for less than $50.

The monitor is completely worthless, you only picked it up so you can say you own a mac. There are a lot better ones sitting in recycling centers all over the place and you got a real shitty one by comparison..

There's different types of ceramics, with high and low thermal conductivity. The 486DX and later CPUs required a heatsink to dissipate the heat transferred through their ceramic packages. Basic metal heat spreaders on chips on basic board is just cheaper to manufacture. As usual, money wins.

wouldn't surprise me if 99% of these macbooks are in a landfill or recycling center somewhere. the other 1% probably is forgotten under someones bed because it never worked and like some project car, the owner never bothered to fix it or believes there's something they left in it

It's a spambot! Where are the mods?

This post is...you guessed it! A clone of Where are we going with this madness?

I didn't know MacRumors was the kind of place people could go to learn how to get the best from their legacy hardware.
Most of the support threads I've seen are in the light of "don't fix it yourself, user" "take it to the ((((genius)))) bar, user" "renew your apple care, user"

It varies by board. The PowerPC forum is pretty based.

I went to the store to get a soldering iron to fix the oscillator, thermal paste because I cleaned everything with soap and water (except electronics of course) including the heatsink and lastly sodium carbonate and peroxide to clean the scratches and yellowing on the case. I still gotta do the yellowing treatment tomorrow because it’s almost 10pm here but everything else is ready to be reassembled.

I’ve already ordered a new 17 inch monitor for like 23 bucks because the one I have is the shitty 15 inch. After that arrives the plan is to max out the ram and get a Radeon 9800 Pro. Don’t know if the cpu can be upgraded but I have the 800MHz one, don’t know if that’ll be enough to play some old games

I'm curious, are there any new mATX motherboards for modern POWER CPUs? Could be a fun project to give an old G4 new life.

Don't you have anything else in your life beyond endlessly wailing about consumer products that so obviously make you feel belittled and inadequate?

Can’t believe I’m finally gonna play this game in OG hardware

Old hardware is just better IMO, you can't go wrong with a 486DX guys

Be my guest. I have a sweet spot for late Sun hardware.
Fuck lOlracle.

Good.
Here's some RISC crap.

>Sun Fire 280R
Is it true the dual 1Ghz were housefires?
Nice Xserve too! I never tried one, but I doubt it's more power hungry than a quad.

This machine is nearly 2 decades old... It is interesting how far Apple has fallen, in terms of repairability, though. The case was designed to make all of the guts easily accessible, whereas nowadays, they're designed to make it as difficult as possible.

Sounds like a good upgrade candidate. I'd imagine they can take modules from other QuickSilvers, but it would probably be fun to throw something extravagant like a PowerLogix upgrade or something into.

the funny thing is you probably spoonfeed tech support/consumer advice to people on this board all the time and are only crying into your keyboard now because you don't like the logo or are just clueless about the tech in question because it isn't gaming or consumption related

>Is it true the dual 1Ghz were housefires?
Fuck yes it is. I have a single 900 (Same chip, just clocked lower) and it puts out an awful lot of heat. It's ridiculous.
>I doubt it's more power hungry than a quad.
It's louder, I can tell you that much. However, at idle the main fans ramp down to pretty much inaudible levels. The PSU fans don't, though. I made a little fan controller for it but the thing blew up because I used an undersized transistor.
I'm currently waiting for a supposedly non-functional XVR-1200 to come in the mail. Seller said it didn't put out any picture when plugged into the test PC (!). Hopefully they just tested it on a PC and the thing didn't come up for obvious reasons.
By the way, I've been doing some experiments on my Ultra Enterprise 250 lately-- check this lspci out.

Good for you. I'm sorry I wasn't around to help. I had to rig this series plug for my 24V memebook, only to find OSX 10.n Billygoat's Gruff or whatever the hell it's called sucked. I couldn't even check my bus schedule or which YouTube.
I put some Linux Powermint something which worked, but constantly maxed out the CPU with the resulting hot bottom.

The mods are either in on it or they just somehow can't keep up with this autist's obsessive tantrum, or they're just lazy and don't give a shit, who knows. Feel free to keep calling it out in the way you're doing, but you're better off just continuing to discuss shit and ignoring his pleas for attention as everyone obviously does in the physical world.

So you bastardized the DC in board? Jesus Christ dude, you can buy a new charger on ebay for a few bucks.

And just to make it clear, it is an actual person doing this. They'll adapt to your responses if they think it will make you angry, sometimes you can make him cry and revert back to his older, easily filterable patterns. He's been wailing like a baby since at least 2016.

Is this literally just one guy flinging shit at a potentially interesting thread because "hurr Apple bad"?

>Single 800
Ssingle? Oh. G4 here. Dual 1.25Ghz Mirror door.
Prior owner was a smoker so... had to clean everything. Have 9.2.1 boot disk, and am going to install 10.4.x on backside Ultra ATA/100 with two 120GB drives for Marathon and Spaceward Ho!

I have the Radeon 9000 pro stock, and goddamn Leopard is a dog.

Have ram at 1.75GB. 1GB+3x256.

This is my backup G4. I have one in storage with 2GB of ram, and also a 22" Cinema display.

omg i live in fucking Chile and i cant find one of those monitors anywhere, luckily i was able to find g3 g4 and g5s powermacs i currently own 2 imac g3, 1 powermac g3 1 g4 and the very best in my opinion powermac g5 2.3 dual core.
you can hate my all you want but for some reason i love ppc macs, you can say i am a macboomer.

Yes. For almost four years. It's really the most pathetic shit I've ever seen on Jow Forums.

i think you're genuinely retarded if you think anything about that image proves op is british

It's not the most pathetic thing I've seen, that honor goes to the great board-wide shitstorm over on /o/ that's still ongoing to this day, though nowhere near as bad as it once was, but it's up there.

That was not an option at the time. The machine was not worth the (any) financial investment. Just making it operational at all was satisfaction enough. My newer MacThings collect dust anyway.

If enough people reported him instead of addressing him the mods would take notice

They do eventually, sometimes they just nuke the whole thread. But I guess we have a counter-autist making generals now, which is fucking fantastic, so maybe it's not as worthless an option as it once was.

I literally just coped and pasted the thread from the other day. I think I, and 1 other guy start these threads every couple days.

if the guy is not manually doing (ie. he's using a botnet), that'd be pretty hard for mods to solve.

>implying you can't just rangeban India

How do I check that? What can I do with the brightness touch control other than press it? Also as far as I know the power LED should be white instead of orange, surely that must mean something but I’ve only found stuff about blinking, mine just stays lit up.

>sperging out on the spamcunt
I can't believe that worked.
Congrats!

>check this lspci out.
What exactly am i supposed to check out other than the fact that Pericom isn't finished and bankrupt?

Once a newfag, always a newfag. Back to rebbit you go.

>but I doubt it's more power hungry than a quad.
Quads aren't as power hungry as your bottom of the barrel gaming pc.

It's a crystal. They're often used as a reference to generate clock signals. I seriously suggest looking around to see what it got knocked off. It's very likely that this is one of the reasons the machine doesn't boot.

This post is yet another clone of this You are ban evading now

That was about it. A PCI to PCIe bridge not crashing the system.
I don't have anything installed on it yet, though, apart from an m.2 to PCIe adapter. I'm eventually getting an Optane module to use with that.
American engineering. The damn Linux driver for it has a bug where it will keep trying to force a link even if there's no cable connected, unless you manually force the link down.

Protip: don't enable jumbo frames if you're using an Intel card which uses the e1000 driver in a sun4u, or you'll get shitloads of kernel unaligned accesses.

Here's the guts of a NETGEAR UTM25. It has a 700MHz Cavium Octeon MIPS SoC, 1GiB of DDR2 and three Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, one of them hooked up to an integrated 5-port switch. Turns out the hardware in this thing is pretty similar to the Ubiquiti Edgerouter Lite, so I was able to put together a NohugsBSD 12.0 image for it by modifying some guy's ERL build script. I don't know what to do with a headless FreeBSD MIPS machine, though.

no games = no use this shit useless junk

thx, any decent terminal emulators you could recommend? will probably be doing some ssh/irc most likely...what I'd really like to be doing is playing some games on that sweet sweet high refresh rate monitor.
Unfortunately I'm starting to get whine on it, and the speakers stopped working 30 minutes into my first use

Yeah, I have the dual-core model. I have a 2.3DP too, but it sounds like a fucking wind tunnel because I repasted it and don't have the hardware test disk to recalibrate the temperature sensors.

Good thing there are games

Attached: 1546836236231.png (709x636, 169K)

I'm not the one who brought them up, I'm just pointing out their existence.

No love for MIPS?

never tried it honestly since I do most of that shit from another host I ssh into with regular keyboard-interactive authentication, but probably. a new terminal emulator wouldn't help with that either way though, you'd probably need to get a new version of OpenSSL/SSH or something.

then you really don't want anything less than 10.4 in that case if you decide to stick with OS X as Camino's javascript engine is way too outdated and better turned off entirely, but even then, an eMac is never going to be very good for browsing no matter what you throw on it, the G4 is just too slow to put up with webshit.

you'd probably get a lot more fun out of it playing around with random software from the macintosh garden, writing programs or playing old games. it's a good opportunity to think a little bit outside of the standard web browsing/vidya box and explore some new things, for that reason I also don't usually recommend things other than OS X either unless you're only interested in development or are trying to kit it out as an autistic anti-botnet machine.

whatever choice is perfectly valid, but being a somewhat esoteric platform that can still run shitloads of commercial software is one of the main reasons to really be into PPC hardware at all for me 2bh, going the GPL route feels like it just limits your options

I posted
Any idea what I could do with it?

CRUX supports PPC since years.

>that honor goes to the great board-wide shitstorm over on /o/ that's still ongoing to this day
Pls explain

3 autists effectively ruined the board for any sort of discussion. Filling half the catalog with Corvette vs GTR threads, filling the entire catalog with gay furry porn every night, invading every single thread with their bullshit except for the generals. It's nowhere near as bad as it was in 2016, but just mention that Porsche is better than BMW for example and the entire thread devolves into a huge shitshow, courtesy of the same guy every time.

How can jannies be so incompetent that three people can take an entire board hostage for years?

Doesn't look like they do any longer

Are there any other PPCs that can be reliably overclocked with the removal of a single resistor like the G4 mac minis? Can I turn my powerbook into even more of a hot plate than it already is?
There's no way this could be done on a wii, right?

2weak. It would be like running a raspberry pi as your daily driver. Really I don't mind the idea of low-power, non-x86 computing, but if it's gonna be too slow to comfortably browse the web and navigate the desktop without excessive delays and performance hiccups, then it ain't worth it. Personally I'm waiting on System76 to announce their ARM laptops, as they're supposedly working on that now.

it is based on the rockpro64 board which is one of the more powerful arm sbcs out there.
youtube.com/watch?v=_0qYnzjWBcg.
It can emulate chains of olympus on PPSSPP to a playable point which is something you cant say for most computers of the size in fact most x86 machines have an issue with that game on PPSSPP.
It also supports 4k@60 video with no issues.

You're right, double checking it its actually a 603e I've got (is in a Power Macintosh 6400)
Basically on paper the chip is competitive but in practice it's anything but.
The 7xx PPC chips though were very competitive.

I'd like to bring to your attention that the following posts:

This is an outrage.

Does anyone have the mythical NT4 build for POWER computers?

Cell sucked and was build on a flawed notion that they would eventually be able to link multiple systems together to function as one but the bandwidth+latency issue was never resolved.
Crazy that internally the cores speak to each other with the IP protocol, hence the name "Broadband engine".

The guy who replied to you is a retard but he's right. PPC is done and architecture in general really doesn't matter anymore like it used to. The jump from the G4/G5 to Core/Core 2 was immediately noticeable in everyday applications especially on laptops with pretty much a tangible doubling in performance.

Nowadays you'd get maybe 10-20% more on some select application that was already plenty fast on a POWER9 Mac Pro, or an extra hour or so of battery life on an ARM MacBook over previous models that already lasted pretty much a full work day anyway.
