There will not be a SATA4. I'm not speculating here, the SATA-IO people really have no plans for it, because it's unnecessary. SAS already fulfills server-side requirements for mass storage at 12 Gbps, and anyone needing more performance is already on fibre channel or NVMe. Over the next 10 years SATA is going to be relegated to being "the HDD interface".

But it's actually opposite of that in terms of motherboard real estate. You could fit several SATA ports in the space a single NVMe board takes on the mobo.
It's good to remember desktop computers are significantly higher power devices than laptop, so just for the sake of thermals alone you don't want to have everything sandwiched on the mobo itself.

I think there's certainly room for both SATA and m.2 in desktop, NVMe for OS and anything that really needs that throughput, and a SATA drive for any other storage.

Ryzen has built-in SATA and NVMe controllers, the chipset is almost entirely superfluous. X570 adds 2/4 extra ports, at the manufacturer's discretion (min 4, max 8). PCIe lanes can be assigned quite freely by the board firmware.

The NVME craze is indeed ridiculous. QLC multi-terabyte drives are now recommended as boot drives only because they come in the M.2 form factor, even though that they are almost as bad, if not worse, than a good HDD.

The new SATA (SATA Express) provided PCIe speeds by allowing for PCIe over SATA.
There will be no SATA4 that's purely SATA and not PCIe over SATA. SATA is basically dead. SATA3 is still getting revisions, but it's also 10 years old now, and there was only 5 years between SATA1 and SATA3.0.

Personally I find the speed of my first sataIII ssds from 2013 to be totally sufficient still. I only bought M.2 drives because my board is provisioned for them and it's sort of convenient to have storage on the motherboard.

M.2 is flourishing because both laptop and desktop users are buying them. Expandability isn't a problem right now for desktop users since there's little demand for more than 2 NVME drives but once they become the assumed standard there's going to be a need to move to an off-board solution. Thankfully U.2 already exists.

M.2 will probably stick around for a while on desktops though for low clutter builds.

NVDIMMs will probably get released first before a new SATA standard.

When I looked into SATA they pretty much said that a new standard would be more power hungry than PCIe which is why SATA Express was developed to allow PCIe over SATA, rather than a higher speed SATA standard.
So SATA 3.X is basically the end, SATA Express is a niche extension and m.2/u.2 is the actual future.

Put this thing in my i5 3570k build as the only drive, removed SATA cables and modular SATA power cables.

Adapter was $7 with the heatsink included. Temps don't exceed 35'c on the drive under stress.

Sorry, it is the other way around. SATA is going to join PCI, ISA, VLB, PATA in the retirement home of obsolete standards within the 2020s.

SATA is only around because of HDDs and ODDs, both of which are going to disappear in the mainstream-space once multi-TIB SSD media in M.2 Express form factor become affordable and commonplace. HDDs will live on in the archive and bulk data storage portions of the market using SAS.
