I would suggest looking to the Fediverse open source federated alternatives too.

The problem is access and ease thereof - sure, you can run some hidden service or exclusive peer to peer freenet thing or make a secret retroshare group for your friends, but it doesn't work well if you want to allow others to hear what you have to say or grow your reach/community.

Hosting and protective services etc.. make things easily accessible and until recently, unless something with actively illegal and the gov't came knocking (with or without a warrant post Patriot Act) you didn't have to worry too much that the companies that handled your domain registration/DNS, hosting etc... were going to fuck you over if you weren't in violation of their TOS.

IPFS lets you host your own nodes and link content to people from them. You literally just hash something and send people a link to it. From your server or someone elses. That's it. If they want to install IPFS then they just get it directly from peers rather than the middleman but it's great imo for linking out large files or a group of them without jumping through stupid file locker bullshit or asking someone to install a torrent client just to see a large video or some shit.

As I recall, IPFS is developed by the same people behind Filecoin, which had a large ICO and yet isn't up and running. I do grant that IPFS seems less directly crypto-related than some other projects that do something similar, such as Steemit and whatnot.

IPFS already exists, works by itself, and is open source so the original authors don't matter much. If the parent company goes under nothing stops people from maintaining it. But if they had a large ICO then I doubt that's even a concern.
