Are sound bars worth it for a "home theater??" I have a few pirated movies that are amazing quality, but only have 5.1 channel audio. I'm not a poorfag, but because of my living room situation, having a surround sound setup would be less then ideal. despite going on Jow Forums regularly, I really don't know shit about dolby 5.1 channel stereo besides some basics. When I watched a movie with 5.1 on my stereo, the sound was so bad I could barely hear dialog, which I assume is because I am missing 3 speakers and a sub.
Will a Sound Bar play all 5.1 channels? Will Dolby 5.1 play as emulated surround soundn through the device? What is the best value sound bar that will let me enjoy the full audio output of a movie, without having to setup 5 speakers and a sub(I fully understand this is the best setup, but I am willing to make some compromise)?
I wanted to make this thread on /tv/, but they are a bunch of mouth breathing retards.
i was wondering the same thing whats a good soundbar?

>audiophile No. No sound bar is audiophile-grade. >play all 5.1 channels Generally, yes. They have an array of speakers in the bar. >emulated Depends on the model. >best value Vizio. I got one for ~$150 and it beats the hell out of the TV speakers. It's nothing compared to my Denon setup but it works well for my computer room TV.

All soundbars sound like garbage. Get a $200-300 pair of speakers from monoprice. Anything that supports surround sound can downmix to stereo. Surround sound is a giant meme as well.

>Are sound bars worth it for a "home theater??" No, they're shit. >When I watched a movie with 5.1 on my stereo, the sound was so bad I could barely hear dialog, which I assume is because I am missing 3 speakers and a sub. Technically yes but your player should have downmixed 5.1 to 2.0 (or 2.1, whatever) so it's your player that's shit (or you're a retard who didn't set it up right). >Will a Sound Bar play all 5.1 channels? If it's 5.1 then yes, otherwise see above. In any case it will be shit. >Will Dolby 5.1 play as emulated surround soundn through the device? I don't know what you mean, but it will be shit. >What is the best value sound bar that will let me enjoy the full audio output of a movie, without having to setup 5 speakers and a sub(I fully understand this is the best setup, but I am willing to make some compromise)? There is none, don't waste your money. Only thing in a proper 5.1 setup that takes extra space is the receiver. The center speaker is smaller than soundbar, bookshelf fronts you can stick in a bookshelf or wall mount, rears you can wall mount, and a sub is a sub just like with a soundbar. >I wanted to make this thread on /tv/, but they are a bunch of mouth breathing retards. Your questions highly suggest you would fit right in, but I'm giving you one (You) worth of benefit of doubt.

my player was plex. I was watching Star Trek, the motion picture. It seemed like it had great sound design and it sounded like shit some parts. This included screeching type sounds when heavy base was playing when they are near the warpcore.
I did not have this issue when watching it on my PC, but my PC has a sub. Should I just get 2 good speakers and a sub? I generally never have sound issues with my movies, but my movie experience last night made me realize that I am getting an unneeded subpar experience.

the problem I have is my living room is very open, and I have it divided into a PC room/ study, and a movie viewing living room area. Putting up surround sound speakers on the wall would be awkward. Also, they would kinda mess up the flow of the room. Also, though I own the property I am staying in, it is a multifamily property and I plan on renting this side out.
Just grab one of the old Dell 2.1 setups off of ebay or similar. Those were designed by Klipsch and sound ridiculously good for what they are.

hey guys so i'm the user that picked up pic related i was using just some receivers i had and they go into protect mode at like 6oclock and this thing must have been built with a super power hungry driver. seriously considering like a 500w car amp or something, i have no idea what to do. never bought anything this retro before that required so much juice.
>Surround sound is a giant meme as well. t. Actual retard. If you're the kind of retard that buys a TV just to play MP3s I can see why you'd say this. Studio monitors are dogshit for movies.

Recievers seem like boomer tech.

Then what is the best setup for home theater if having surround sound is not an option.
Kayden Thomas
Barely audible dialogue means your device was not downmixing correctly, dialogues are pretty much all on centre so without it you'll hear jack shit if that signal is not distributed to L and R. Sub doesn't make any difference in legibility of what you hear, it's omnidirectional and just gives the sound the extra oomph. There are no good stereo speakers to make for satisfactory tv watching that don't require a receiver. Though yes, 2.1 receiver driven setup will still give you much better experience than a 9001.1 soundbar full of marketing buzz words. One you have it you can build up at your own pace, add center, surrounds, ceiling/upfiring Atmos speakers and what have you. desu you sound like you're looking for excuses to just get a fucking soundbar and not a proper sound system. Can't stop you if you do, just saying you won't get a real experience with it out of properly mixed movies. Any decent receiver will let you run setup for your room and compensate distance of each speaker in delay and volume. Some come with a mic to do it, or you can just use measuring tape. Both wall mounting and stands are an option. Again it's all up to you, but you won't get a good sound out of a practically single directional source and "virtual" surround us dogshit marketing gimmick that sounds nothing like the real thing.

Just use JACK and look up downmixing matrices.

I don't need to get a sound bar, but if you are suggesting that a good 2.1 system would solve my issues, that would be great. I currently have a very weak sound system that was 35bucks a walmart and mainly purchased for my wedding. I have it plugged into my TV's using a standard audio jack. Other wise I use TV speakers, which suck.
If you can suggest a decent priced receiver and reasonable speakers that I can get off ebay, I will be totally down. I am just letting you know that a 5.1 system is not an option.

Sony HTCT 100, if you can find one and you're fine with 1080p.

7.1.2 > *

no, because sound bar drivers are just a little bit bigger than the onboard tv. the chamber volume is not that big and made out of plastic. there is no replacement for displacement.
Angel Bailey
Best boomer option is a big set of floorstanding stereo speakers.
What is decently priced to you? I got Pioneer VSX-933 new for under $230 on sale. It usually hovers between $250 and $300 and it's still a great price for it. Any 7.1 receiver in that price range will do the job for you (while on sale of course, msrps are from $600 ish upwards), be it Pioneer, Yamaha or Onkyo. Don't get any less than 7.2 with Atmos and 4K, this is not disposable equipment and some time in the next 15 years you will surely want to expand your system. For speakers look for deals on Klipsch, Polk, Monoprice or JLB bookshelf fronts, they can be found for $70 each for starters, same-ish for a sub. I would really recommended getting a center speaker too, but you can do without it for starters. You don't need to have all speakers from the same set, you can mix and match freely. With some patience and looking around you can get a very good, future proof and expandable build for under $500. Read a bit about it but don't agonize over details, there is a point at which you just need to commit and once you have a setup start figuring out what your like about it and what you would change it expand, at that point it's down to your personal taste and actual needs. It will be a very entry level system compared to what's actually considered "audiophile", but believe me it will make a day and night difference compared to what you had until now.
