6 years ago, stores were still selling 3.5" phones. At the time, Androids were advertising themselves on having bigger screens, and the Galaxy Note was taking off. The big phones started outselling small phones, and that lead us to where we are today.

That's true but the peons responsible for studying trends can't into lifecycles. They buy the bigger phones at first because they're curious and it works well enough to not want to go through the hassle of replacing it. Everyone does the same. 3-5 years later is finally time to upgrade and suddenly their only choice is a bigger phone because the fags responsible for this shit are selling their shareholders on the idea that nobody wants a smaller phone.

Also keep in mind as recently as iphone 8 4.8" was their best selling phone and there's been big backlash against bigger phones that led to iphone se being created.

Take a step back and examine your logic here. If Android-based smartphone makers love to copy Apple so much, why haven't they made a Galaxy SE, a Pixel SE, a G8 SE, and so on? Apple users tend to be fine with smaller screens, Android users tend to gravitate towards larger screens. There's really not a big market for small Android flagships.
