What the fuck

What the fuck.

What's the best way to watch SD content on high-res screens?

The problem is that increasing the window size will make the video look like shit. Might as well

Wait until you're getting close to 40

t. 37 year old who can't notice any difference in quality between and

install mpv

Use mpv and go to the mpv thread

With mpv: FSRCNNX (16) + SSSR + KrigBilateral + luma scaler of your choice (e.g. ewa_lanczossharp, lanczos, etc.)
Of course only if your machine is powerful enough to run it.

nah
exact proportions will look the same at a distance

go watch in the living room and make some popcorn
chill

madvr

Already using it. Second pic was taking via a screenshot tool.

A year or so ago I watched content exclusively in fullscreen. I told people on IRC if this was normal and they said no, they're watching it in the original size instead of fullscreening it, because SD upscaled looks like shit (and it does).

Is there any actual solution to this problem? I don't want to watch SD videos on a 4k TV, for example. Imagine the horror, it's either upscaled to hell or most of the screen is my wallpaper.

1: Make vid go full screen.
2: STEP THE FUCK BACK
3: watch vid

this, but how to watch content on ultra-wide screens?

Attached: 1512693879887.jpg (480x602, 77K)

why do you need to occupy all the pixels if your new TV has more pixels than when the video was made?

so dumb

waifu2x

This one is maybe a better example.

Tip top kek.

Guess that MIGHT be the solution, me brainlet.

Are you me?

Use a good upscaling algorithm like an appropriate version of NGU from madVR or whatever the fancy shit from mpv was called.

oled with black bars

Attached: 156590733565.png (1440x1080, 2.22M)

Then use a good upscaling shader with aggressive sharpening and a tiny bit of deringing

What are your settings?

I use

# Video
#vo=opengl
#profile=opengl-hq
vo=gpu
profile=gpu-hq
tscale=oversample
tscale-clamp=1.0
temporal-dither
blend-subtitles=yes
interpolation
video-sync=display-resample
hwdec=no

You don't, go on Craigslist and source a Trinitron.

Truly the way anime was supposed to be watched.

It looks the fucking same it's pokemon. I'd say audio compression is what really kills rips

unironically lower your standards. after 34 years on this earth that's the single best piece of advice i can offer anyone.
high standards are responsible for at least 95% of unhappiness, if you can't lower your standards you will never be satisfied with anything.
>favorite classic anime re-releases in hd
>but the audio is shit
>re-re-releases with hd audio
>but the story is more shallow than modern anime
>series reboot with modern av quality and a deep story and extensive character development arcs
>but it doesn't have the nostalgia factor
take the boomerpill and lower your standards, it's the only way.

Could be the solution to get out of my depression, actually. How hard would that step be?

I'm waiting for a neural net that can turn vintage anime into high res anime.

In your terminal.

You don't have to wait any longer.

This is so beautiful.

How'd you do that?

x1 + magnifying glass

Isn't something like fsrcnnx-16 better? I'd use that if I was autistic about upscaling, my GPU should be able to handle it. But since I'm not so autistic, I'm using only ravu-lite-r4.

what's wrong with jessie

it's really not hard at all. whenever we are faced with 2 or more alternatives we tend to create a false scale. in the case of the OP the scale runs from SD quality to HD quality. in reality, the scale runs from something terribel to no anime at all to HD quality anime, where SD quality is somewhere very close to HD. if you focus too much on the high end of the scale and miss the big picture you will make yourself miserable.

Attached: real_vs_imagined_standards.png (720x360, 21K)

don't wait what? fuck up the image? look at her eye.

mpv --really-quiet --vo=tct

Get a CRT monitor for old media, that's what I did.

Whatever you say, blur-lover.

Why don't they just redigitize it from the original drawings?

Attached: 1496115462091.png (612x491, 98K)

sorry zoomfag, i don't have superman eyes.

I think heavy sharpening suits old media well.

Attached: mpv-shot0001.jpg (1440x1080, 296K)

Maybe get source that doesn't look like a VHS recording

If that's using waifu2x the problem is likely that too much noise reduction was used, i.e. user error.

Your problem seems to be not the SD content itself, but a heavily denoised encode. Dragon Ball is not supposed to look that smooth. Find a different encode.

Attached: it's lovely.jpg (640x480, 59K)

The dev somehow thought it was a good idea to use max. denoise by default, even when waifu2x is potentially used several times per frame.

Yeah, too much noise reduction used. Pic related is closer to what you can expect from waifu2x if you don't go crazy on the denoise level. Even those peppers turned into green blobs in the upscale there.

Attached: sample_input.mp4_snapshot_00.02.019(CUnet)(noise_scale)(Level1)(width 1920).png (1920x1010, 1.35M)

Sharpened using edge detection weighted unsharp mask. I tested with live action but it seems to work better with anime. Nowhere close to realtime because my GLSL sucks and my GPU is slow.

And it's not even meme shit.

Pros to him.

Any clue what the best way to play this stuff is?
I use DVDs, but does Plex work on a 360 to play 480i content over rgb/component without letterbars?
I ask because many devices like a Roku lt just play it with downscaled letterbars. Nasty.

Who are you quoting?

Attached: out.png (1440x1080, 1.56M)

Lines are too thin.

Yes, you need to go into the config file for Video2x and change the denoise value from 3 to 0.
Nobody seems to have pointed out that the reason your video looks like fucking garbage is because it was ALREADY denoised. The real frame should look something like this.

Attached: dbz12-22-1-waifued.png (1280x960, 1.31M)

Yuck.

go yeet off of a cliff zoomer

Come on now. It hurts looking at these artifacts. Feels like streaming again.

because it's a goddamn still I pulled from Google. I don't care about DBZ, only spics and niggers like this show, but it's obvious that the DBNL release the OP grabbed is some kind of advanced shite and if he wants better video quality he needs to download better video.

I notice a difference, I just don't care as long as it's not telesync tier

A low resolution doesn't automatically equal better quality? SD encodes and rips can look amazing if they aren't served over streams and transcoded to hell and back.

You're all so fucking stupid. Anime at 480p tends to look absolutely fine because it's primarily simplistic solid color characters standing in place with only their lip-flaps moving. 480p doesn't cut it when you're watching live-action tv shows and movies because real life human-beings and our environment around us have way more detail than these cheaply produced cartoons.

480p is fine. You only notice the difference in quality moving from 480p to 1080p or 4k is if the following is true:

1. You have a massive large TV and you sit very close to it (can touch it with out stretched hand)

2. You have a massive large TV and your living room is the size of an auditorium and you sit in the very back.

>google DBNL
>it's some /a/utist complaining about how shit they are
for the record he said to download this version utsukushiiraws.wordpress.com/2014/12/17/dragon-ball-z/

What are you even wasting my time about? OP's image has obviously been run through an obnoxious amount of NR, which has nothing to do with JPEG compression.

Attached: please swallow your weight in tide pods.png (1300x684, 1.27M)

Stop using a video source that been heavily processed like that. They look like shit because the filters they have applied make the lines thin and at the same time remove details. Video that hasn't been processed like that may look more blurry but it will have more details

>720×480
Oh jolly gee, I sure like cropped shit!

> hurr more detail = good
> muh realism
people dislike porn at 4k because you can see the fucking pores on the actors' skin. at some point you're just circlejerking over the resolution. people don't watch movies to count the fucking hairs on an actors' head, they watch it because it's entertaining.

I know this is a little before your time but look up the resolution of anamorphic DVD and realize what an underage retard you are

Pretty sure DBZ is supposed to be 4:3, despite anamorphic DVDs existing.

is it even possible to be this much of a fucking retard i mean really

Attached: twitch stream your suicide zoomer.png (435x167, 21K)

How about you start caring about WHAT you're watching before you start counting the pixels on your screen, manchild

You are braindead.

People DO want movies that look realistic, if the resolution is too high for you used a 720p monitor.

>You only notice the difference in quality moving from 480p to 1080p
Even 720p to 1080p is an enormous difference, do you have eyes?
Watching anime in 720p and 1080p is an extreme increase in quality, and this goes for every screen I own, from TV to smartphone.

>low resolution doesn't automatically equal better quality?
Of course not, but in 99.999% it is the case, since usually the SD Version is derived by downscaling the HD version.

And in the cases where it isn't the HD version is an upscaling of the SD version..

>German shit porn
kek

Try watchin an 800x600 video on a 4K screen. You'll need a magnifying glass.

>why do you need to occupy all the pixels if your new TV has more pixels than when the video was made?
Because you do not to watch a video in a tiny window?
What the fuck is this question, have you ever watched a DVD on a 1080p TV screen, how would you feel if it was just a tiny window?

Visual acuity isn't supposed to really start taking a hit until 60-70. Have you been to an optometrist recently? You might just need to start wearing reading glasses if you don't already (or update your prescription if you do).

>Nobody seems to have pointed out that the reason your video looks like fucking garbage is because it was ALREADY denoised.

no, you're literally blind
