Because it was designed as a shell replacement, but users adopted it as a scripting language, and forced that guy whose name begins with g to make it one.
It's painfully obvious how bad it is for anything non-trivial once you actually know what you're doing.
Whitespace syntax is objectively retarded, and the rest of its grammer is also pretty bad.
It lacks constructs necessary to do bigger projects.
From what I remember, creating modules is annoying.
It's also always single threaded due to global interpreter lock.
etc.

Python is mostly used for unimportant glue code between various native libraries for a reason.
It's easy for chumps to learn, and hard for them to fuck up.
Ideally lua'd take its place because it's designed for glue code, and to be easy, and also a much better language in general, but it doesn't have a language integrated dependency manager like pip so it never took off.

At least pythons not as bad as php, which has a similar origin story of something that's not a language being made a language due to peer pressure, but is much worse.

And then port it to windows (where it is was primarily used) by emulating X11 via a library.

Anybody use Tcl/Tk for GUIs?

I need a UI for a system with very limited memory and low performance characteristics and it seems like TK is the best around for that.

Tcl/Tk is absolute perfection.
Scales from quickly hacked together to full blown business app.
It's faster than Qt/Gtk/Wx even though it is interpreted.

Python + Qt if you want to go multiplatform and performance isn't the main issue
C# + WPF/WinForms if you want relatively good performance and comfy tools that make creating new program a breeze, only for Windows tho
