Brainlet here. My laptop does not have 2D or 3D acceleration, so I thought I might just disable the GPU altogether to save power.
Besides hardware acceleration, is there anything I would need the GPU for? And how do you disable the GPU on Linux?

I literally disabled any hardware acceleration with "Option NoAccel true" in the xorg.config file. Otherwise, Xorg does not run.
So what did I disable, then? Only 3D acceleration?

Why would you turn off the GPU though? You can't turn off the GPU because you still have to copy information from memory into the GPU framebuffer for it to show up, you get almost no power savings (in fact it will be a lot worse with software rendering) while losing a ton of performance by software rendering.

GPU acceleration on processors was the best thing to happen laptops besides wifi
Ive an old core 2 duo desktop and the thing cannot decode x265. Can use it for anything else a basic computer cos 3.6ghz and 8gb ram but software decode pegs cpu usage at 100% and sucks down power
