Most of the ones I've had with battery / solar hybrid don't actually charge the battery, they just somehow use the solar when it's available and try the battery when it's not.

Or maybe I've only bought knockoff calcs. I have my one from HS a decade or so ago in a drawer around here somewhere. I'll check

Solar powered calculators are possible because they take almost no power at all, around a milliamp. You could run them on a potato

That's not even so certain, those tiny button shits are often used in stuff like handcranked flashlights and they're clearly getting a charge in there.
