Just lost 900 gigabytes of backup shit and pictures on my external HDD and it just says it's RAW and needs to be reformatted. Tried several different data recovery softwares to no success. It's a year old and I think it might have been overheating (it was warm, but not hot, when I found it wasnt reading as a drive except in disk management). any advice anons? I'm fucking inches away from shelling out $100 for a fix at a local repair shop

install gentoo

Boot on Linux and check if it recognizes it

since you don't know wtf you're doing just pay for the recovery.

if you really want to fuck around and risk losing everything for good, then the first step is to identify the actual problem. it's possible you already caused additional damage or obfuscated the problem by trying recovery software. Check the disk diagnostic info to see if there is any throughput, if there are massive amounts of errors, etc. Listen and touch the disk to see if it actually spins. If there is actually throughput, then use dd before doing anything, so that you have a full image in case the drive gets worse or you cause more damage. Disconnect the drive. Search the disk image for partition and filesystem data. If there is enough data, you can rebuild the filesystem. If you are lucky you can just fix the first sectors of the disk and get back nearly everything. If you aren't lucky but the disk works well enough, you can use tools to search for files on the raw image and rebuild any files which aren't corrupt (you'll lose metadata like file names and directories but hopefully get back a good amount of stuff).
If there is no throughput you have to diagnose what broke. In some cases, you can just replace the controller and the disk works. In other cases, there is a mechanical failure that can be fixed but this can be tricky because it would need to be calibrated. If the drive is totally fucked, as long as the platters aren't scratched you can read the raw data off the platters and work from there but this gets time consuming and expensive.
Very worst case, you got a massive failure like physical scratches, or a ton of bad bits being written. Chances are though its 90%+ recoverable. But you don't sound like the type to get it done correctly yourself. If recovery costs $100, then consider that you can make that money back in a days work and fixing it yourself with no experience would easily take several days if not weeks of work.

File system sectors fucked up big time?

>Tried several different data recovery softwares to no success
Did you try...
Runtime GetDataBack Simple 5.01 Crack or Portable?

>external HDD
was it after windows update? Don't do anything until you check in linux if files are still there. Windows done that shit to my external HDD after two fucking separate update, it just fucks up something in partition table and locks itself out of being able to do anything with the drive. After that went from dualbooting to using only linux, fucking pajeets are completely losing it, it seems. I don't even understand how you go from modifying irrelevant shit in your "add more telemetry" updates to fucking up partition tables but somehow they do it.

I have a chromebook and i checked it on that cause i assumed since it's based off the linux kernel and what not. should I full on just boot ubuntu to make sure?

nah just some freeware shit

makeuseof.com/tag/fix-corrupted-windows-ntfs-filesystem-ubuntu/

gonna try this rn will post in a minute how it works

If you care about your data, unplug the drive right now and take it to a repair shop.

If you care about saving a few pennies, by all means fuck about with freeware "recovery" software.

You do have backups, right.??

could've been after the windows update, not 100% sure to be honest they did coincide pretty fucking close though, trying linux shit rn

Why would he care about recovering the data from the drive at all if he had backups?

Recovering the couple of changed files between backups that aren't worth paying to have recovered

fuck you sneed

literally this, I just moved over around 200gbs from my phone a week prior to this happening

it is raw from so much porn

like 2% of it is porn, I got a separate ssd for that shit 97gb and counting

Try photorec, it worked for me.
cgsecurity.org/

cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Use TestDisk to search for lost partitions, in your case an NTFS one.

>97gb and counting
that's nothing

try to switch your HDD cable first. the weird partition size might indicate your system can't read the data properly and usb connection gets fucked up.

Attached: 1564645866368.jpg (1200x1179, 501K)

tried three different ones as soon as it happened
although it takes the larger micro usb cable (forget the name) so I just other different micro usb cables, think I should try to use a full cable like the one provided?

If it's still powers on, ddrescue it right now.
Then try TestDisk on the image The drive is effectively dead now.

looks like it's not showing up in linux as a readable drive, going to go through with all this bs now

in windows or linux?

Have you tried chkdsk E: /f in an elevated command prompt?

Or chkdsk E: /r

Windows, dumbass.

hey hey hey I already did it

Should use both, and that’s what does in a brainlet-friendly manner.

just realized my image never posted

okay I've tried posting the pic like 4 times and its not working but it's just saying since it's not formatted it cant check the drive for file system errors
what do now

Checkdisk like the anons above me say, or use one of those free partition recovery things, and try checkdisk again if it's still unreadable in explorer.

This one worked perfectly on my external hdd.

both chkdsk /r and /f resulted in "Cannot open volume for direct access" please walk me through this I'm scared anons

>picture of your screen
On second thought, pay the stupid tax and take it in.

hey, I've been working off of my phone for most of this (my internet has been wacky on my pc as of late) but I fixed that at least so here's this cunt

Partition table, more likely.

I am crossing my fingers, user.
Disks are cheap these days and the contents is more often more valuable than the disk. You should get a new disk every second year, copy the old data to the new one and retire the old as a more permanent backup.

Try chkdsk /f /r /x

So chkdsk doesn't work, it's not readable in linux, and i can't go into properties and tools to check for errors
wat do

fuck me

You forgot the drive letter.

>cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
doing this now then trying ddrescue if all else fails

>it's not readable in linux
Did you see if it shows up with lsblk?

It doesn't have a drive letter assigned cause it's RAW(I tried E: if you look at the past history)

What is this? Sorry if I'm dumb in this stuff, I've never had to fuck around with cmd or terminal really before outside of password recovery

Also, I just assigned it to E: and it now says this

Attached: cmd2.png (972x515, 27K)

nothing of value was lost

Attached: 1551407524311.jpg (1462x1462, 162K)

lsblk is a Linux command that will show block devices, a.k.a. disks in the machine.

Start Ubuntu, open terminal, type lsblk. If you see the drive, then you can fsck -fy /dev/sdX, where X is whatever the drive shows as.

will that work on/repair an NTFS drive?

Yes

aight going into linux rn

If it doesn't work and you have systemrescuecd, you still have other options like force mounting with ntfs-3g, ntfsfix, or testdisk [/ photorec.]

I see the drive, I just have two four terabyte drives (one is internal and working fine and one is the external that's giving me problems) how do I distinguish which one is which?

Is the internal drive your boot drive?

How about just unplugging the other ones if you can't tell by serial number or known port or such?

I figured it out and this is what I got, wat do

You need to use sudo

sudo you retard. I think after this it's time to put aside the whole "I like to pretend how to use computer thing" and just backup everything to a cloud.

testdisk

Alright, I get it now jesus it's been fucking years since I've had to touch a terminal

Attached: Screenshot from 2019-08-20 10-16-06.png (1265x920, 197K)

Try the same command but use fsck.ntfs. Usually it’ll figure it out but it’s not like this is the first instance of loonix being retarded.

IMAGINE BEING AT COMPUTERS

let's look how badly Jow Forums will permanently fuck OPs hdd

you clearly have no clue, stop launching commands blindly

pay the recovery tax and then google tax for 1TB of cloud storage so to cover for any retardness

ok now execute this:
sudo rm -fr /

If it was just backup what does it matter. You still have the original.

wtf why do i have a maki wallpaper now

let this be a lesson to you to always use RAID

Yes use RAID 0 like me.

someone please post the screencap of user doing a 8 disk raid and having one fail

ouch

this always makes me laugh, thanks user

Name on file system that isn't shit.

Hey OP, any progress?

ext4

You expect a filesystem recovery tool to apply a bunch of choices without asking the user? You winniggers really are a special type of stupid.

NTFS is dog shit and I'm surprised micropenis didn't phase that shit out. So many options like ext4 or btrfs that'll be better

I do enjoy reading anons actually being helpful and informative
good post

hey man! thanks for checking in, nothing yet, meant to post a screenshot as I have tried fsck.ntfs and ntfsfix and ntfsfix has shown me other things, screenshot wasnt working so heres another great quality phone cap

Are you trolling? Use /dev/sdd2. Jesus Christ

unironically no I'm just retarded

The error messages are clear but you still type in random bullshit.

I've lost 2TB of precious data, don't worry user, the pain never truly goes away

>using windows
pay money or fuck off
that's how you like it

suits you even better
