Just asking, actually I don't even know ristretto.

I use xfce, so that's the default, its their image viewer. It's faster to load than gwenview.
I use gw because it has more options (such as higher quality resizing.

I just open the image in a hex editor, uncompress and strip the header then look at the hexadecimals. I dont see 0-F anymore, I see a redhead, a car, a frog,

Whichever one is the default on $CURRENT_DISTRO. They're all pretty good.

i'm using feh user. it's fairly nice and has alright features. it's a classic x app, that's why i like it.

The default MATE one is my default, but I also have feh for having pictures with just window decorations and the picture for desktop threads.

Emacs works on all relevant platforms, therefore everything you could possibly use comes with an image viewer.

No image viewer handles GIFs and quality scaling as well as mpv. But when I want to easily zoom and navigate pictures in a zoomed state (i.e. to compare several versions of the same picture), then Viewnior is definitely better. It can also be patched to handle FLIFs in contrast to mpv. With your attitude you might as well use your browser for everything and call it a day.

I also tried Nomacs once. Pissed me off, when I used it to weed through a directory with thousands of images (deleting many in the process) and it turned out that the gallery fucked up and it deleted random pictures instead of those I wanted.
