Is it safe to plug in ~6yo HDD into my freshly built system and use it as one of the storage units? Main concerns are disk's "bad stuff" that could leak into bios or am I big stupid?
Jayden Reyes
Thanks for this answer, yeah I've used wget in the end, my connection hasn't dropped yet but if it does then I hope it will be able to resume. Thank you for the answer anyway.
Do you know what it is on the server that determines whether you can resume downloads? Does it depend on what server software you're using e.g. Apache or Nginx? Do you need newer versions of such software for it to work? Or is it dependent on back-end frameworks like Rails / Express whatever?
Jeremiah Butler
I got a folder named Games in /home. I cd /home then cd Games but i says there is no file or directory there with that name. What do
David Ramirez
nevermind found it with ls
Mason Sanchez
>disk's "bad stuff" that could leak into bios Yes you're stupid
Christopher Mitchell
Noob here but leak into BIOS? Not even sure what that means. I can't see why it would be unsafe. Surely the worst thing that would happen is that the disk might be dead, although I severely doubt it after only 6 years (obviously if it had been used very very heavily then it could be dead after that amount of time, but you won't know until you've tried it).
Or the only other thing I can think of that would make a drive unsafe is if you've applied tons of static electricity to it or something. As I say I'm a noob though so I'm just guessing.

Is it possible to have a Bluetooth keyboard connected to two devices at once and operate them both simultaneously?
Gabriel Reed
ls -lah is the answer to everything in my opinion
-l is longform (for each file it shows you permissions, filesize, etc.) -a shows you hidden files as well (any filename beginning with ".") -h makes the filesizes given by -l more readable, showing KB and MB instead of just the raw number of bytes
Juan Gray
I thought Bluetooth worked on the principle of "pairing", so I don't think BT devices can be paired with anything more than one other device, but I dunno, maybe google / the internet has answers.
Xavier Robinson
Yes? Worst case scenario its damaged and wont work.
Is there a way to globally exclude a row from all mathematics in a spreadsheet? I have a row that is a duplicate, that i dont want to be part of any of the mathematics in the rest of the sheet, but i also dont want to change 50+ formulae to bypass just this single row from being used on the sheet.. I need that row to be with the rest of the data or i would just copy it off screen
Kevin Martin
thanks based user, time to update my alias

What can I do to help myself retain information, I keep forgettting programming techniques. It just going over stuff over and over really my only option? How do I manage to remember inane shit from games and shows but can't remember this?

Want to update my Windows 10 from 1607 to whatever the new one is.
Problem is, whenever I do this, it uninstalls all my useful drivers, and deletes all my personal files so I have to revert back, what do?
Parker Green
I meant all sorts of viruses and shiz in that nature. From my very very extensive knowledge of these stuff I know that there are viruses that can corrupt your bios and basicaly you won't get rid of it. I do not remmember what kind of porn I saved on that disk so just wondering if it could magicaly transfere itself onto my new precious bios
Ryan Gonzalez
If you're scared just plug the drive to an old computer you don't mind fucking up and see if there's anything fishy in the drive, then format it
alternatively just buy a new hard drive, HDDs are dirt cheap nowadays and it'll very likely have better performance than the old one
Brandon Lee
I have a local browser based application I built using command line programs in windows and I want to adapt it to use in a Linux server, right now it's a series of exes that modify HTML based on the user's interaction. What language/platform is generally used for this kind of thing on a Linux server? I'm sure I'll have to rewrite the programs since I wrote them in C#
Wyatt Parker
I need a shipping scale. Is there any specific one I should get?
Dominic Anderson
the one that suits your needs scales are only accurate within a certain range, so get one that supports the full range you need or get two, one for light and one for heavy objects

I used a USB 3.0 drive to install Manjaro using Rufus. I formatted the drive today, but now I'm getting like usb 1.0 speeds on it. I'm trying to transfer some Kindle books to it for a friend of mine. It's been taking like 30 minutes. Any ideas to fix this? I spent a lot of money on the drive and to have it crap out like this is really saddening. Speeds are about 3.7mbs - 7.2mbs, its a SanDisk Cruzer Glide if that's relevant.
Benjamin Jenkins
What filesystem did you format it to? That could well be a factor. And what OS are you using? Manjaro or is that on another computer? Make sure you've got all the relevant drivers installed of course.
E.g. I have a Mac and I think I get the best speeds with APFS (Apple Filesystem) and slightly slower speeds with things like exFAT and FAT32, although I still get good USB 3 speeds on them).
Julian Adams
Formatted as NTFS. I'm currently using it on my desktop via a hub. I know the hub isn't the problem because my backup drive get around 30-40mb/s. I just got rid of the ISO install today, so I've been messing around with it trying to get those speeds.
Carson Murphy
Is there some way to disable definitely the constant password pop-ups in Mint every time I click on some applications and programs? I can't find any option for that.
try adding nopasswd to your user in the sudoers file?
James Sanchez
OS is Wangblows.
Michael Carter
Well I'm not fucking with my backup drive, that's good enough for me. I just want the flash drive to work properly.
Chase Myers
A USB 3 hub plugged into a USB 3 port on your computer? What happens if you plug the SanDisk straight into the computer without the hub?
Camden Hughes
Already done, and it still happens. It seems that this option only disables pop-ups through the terminal, and I want to disable the ones that come up always when you click some programs and options. I want to disable completely the password thing.
godaddy offers me a price of around two backs for my first domain on their website but I did buy one from them already. will using the same card for payment with another ip etc work? any other hacks? any alternatives that are cheaper? any good offers right now? i know of one eu offer that offers 2 domain free for a year for one user but I am not in eu and seems ppl are getting locked out of control panel n shit after making a "purchase" with false info.
.com I assume? there are several sites that offer $0.99 .com domains with purchase of a hosting plan you might be able to find one with a really cheap plan and immediately cancel so you'd pay $0.99 + 1 month of hosting for $1-$2

Planning to set up home server for nice and cosy storage as well as potentialy using it as a tool for web development / C++ project building. My networking knowledge is quite limited and I am not even sure where to begin. Could anyone point to the good introductory materials or drop some tips?
Jack Wood
go to home depot and buy 120 yards of fiber and a fiber splice lock/connector and splice them yourself
Jack Richardson
i dont know you guys but is so fucking funny when something like an os or software "shits itself"
i fuckin die imagine reading that someone os or software just stopped working out of nowhere

Why does the color change when I make webms? Doesn't seem to matter what I do, the color tint will differ from the original source, generally it tends to be more red / less orange
I understand it has to do with compression, but I can set the bitrate to higher than the source file and it still comes out that way (Yes I realize how dumb that is, don't worry I don't do this)
Weird. And all your chipset drivers are installed on your computer, assuming this USB 3 port is on your mobo? (Obviously if it's an expansion card I assume that would need a driver too.) Don't really know what else it could be, maybe the flash drive is just fucked, but that sucks if so, and I've never had a flash drive fail for no reason.
Dylan Walker
Help?
Julian Hall
If I upgrade my laptop do I need to buy a charger with a higher wattage
Brandon Moore
WebMs for Jow Forums (so VP8)? If yes then the reason is VP8 only supporting BT601, while your input is BT709 (standard for HD videos). If you use ffmpeg then try again with this filter colormatrix=bt709:bt601
Robert Martin
Linuxfag here fixing someones computer. I have no idea about Windows.
Where's the Windows Update Turbo Mode toggle? It has been 5 hours since it started installing version 1903 and it's getting on my nerves. Isn't there a way to tell it that I'm not using the computer so it can go ahead and go fast? How can it be this fucking slow?
Loads all images when you open a thread instead of loading each picture individually, once you expand it.
Blake Robinson
yes

Is there a windows 10 setting that dictates when a laptop goes from sleep to hibernate?

how the fuck do you see a list of all of a server's unique emotes on Discord? I'm using discord in-browser, does it only let you if you do it on mobile or the desktop app?
Xavier Smith
Absolutely dumbest of the dumb question, but can I get around ISP's with an Ethernet cable? My uni's ISP blocks torrenting but there are Ethernet outlets here. If not, how to get past torrent blocker?
No, the ethernet cable will accomplish nothing. You need to buy a VPN to get around it. You should always use an ethernet cable though just by virtue of that making your connection way faster than wifi anyway.
Carter Carter
Why does every tech problem I have inevitably loop back to "haha just buy a vpn bro"?
This literally is the answer you're looking for though, it's not a meme.
Xavier Lewis
Trackng test stated: Is your browser accepting Do Not Track commitments? No. What are track commitments and how do I fix it?
Ian Watson
if you know how, you can just set up a VPN at your home and not have to pay for one. I'm not sure if just a raspi would do the trick but you should look into it
Easton Ramirez
ah I don't have anything that checks for do not track policies or something though I did configure to send do not track signals in firefox. Any addons for that?
Tyler Hill
Anyone ever wire up their house with cat5e? Any potential pitfalls I should look out for or should just running cables everywhere be alright.

Facebook Messenger (Android) keeps turning sound notifications on, whereas I just want it to vibrate and pop up on screen. I'll change it to that, but then a few hours later it reverts back to the default sound. Does anyone else have this same issue with it or any other apps, or is there a solution for me?
>inb4 don't use messenger

Anything like Sidebar Diagnostic so I can keep an eye on CPU and GPU temperature but, up to date?

When you shrink a window on a site like YouTube, for example, is it still 1080p or whatever the resolution of the window size you shrank is?
Andrew Garcia
One of my external drives fucked when my computer went to sleep the other day and now I can't use it without formatting, so now I'm trying to recover the shit on it before I do that. I'm using EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard to try and recover and can see that most, if not all of the files are still on there and uncorrupted, but I don't wanna spend fucking 130$ to get my shit back. Anyone have any other suggestions on how to do it for free/cheap? Thanks in advance.
Brody Diaz
Can anyone recommend me a good Android app that lets me access my Google Drive? Don't want to use the official Google Drive app since it's that one-touch sign in that connects half your device to Google..
Aaron Rogers
How badly does google search spy on you?
Computer is linux, browser is mozilla with startpageas default, but I have google bookmarked because startpage is fucking useless when looking for specific sites.
Won't have to once I finish Uni. I use Syncthing for everything else, just need gdrive for uploading things to professors/researchers.
Zachary Jackson
Image: it's not, just know when to use PNG and when not to. Audio: it's not, stop whining about lopping off wavelengths that you can hear and the corruption of data that was never pure to begin with. Video: because the size of raw video is FUCKING MASSIVE and they have to do the impossible job of turning into something not fucking massive.
Austin Price
1) >I have google bookmarked because startpage is fucking useless when looking for specific sites you're idiot, startpage uses google's search results 2) firefox still spys on you, you have to decrapware it: spyware.neocities.org/guides/firefox.html
Levi Ross
Sorry, I meant using compressed folders like .7z and such and such.
Angel Gray
>Image: it's not, just know when to use PNG and when not to. PNG for largely few-color images like webpages JPG for images with many colors, like photographs. Right?
Aiden Adams
Take two satellite dishes, stick outdoor wireless access points at the focus on the end of the arm. Point them directly at each other.

How reliable is sound from monitors? I'm thinking about ditching my tv and just plugging my wii u into the monitor and plugging speakers into it
Camden Kelly
Pretty much. But as long as you aren't saving already-lossy-compressed images or photographs as PNG then you can probably justify yourself in using PNG.
Nathan Gray
Gotcha, ty.

Better to give your data to the Russians than the glowniggers, at least.

>asus router shits itself every three months What can I replace this hunk of dogshit with that will actually work on a regular basis? I'm not worried about anything except reliability. Speed is no issue, budget is unlimited. If I have to sell a kidney to never have to try and unfuck another router, I'll be a happy man.
Joseph Watson
>you're idiot, startpage uses google's search results Then why is it so shit? Also that didn't actually answer the question Oh hey, same! Situation as I understand it- The big hot button issues are security, and anonymity. Turning on 2FA on the exchange and your email should solve most it, followed by having Ublock Origin and Noscript on an *up to date* copy of Firefox (chrome doesn't have noscript, but it does have equivalents). Make sure to store most of your make-belief money off your computer in cold wallets, ideally paper (but I'm still learning about this) but it can be useful to have some chump change stored on your computer itself to see if anyone's managed to get in. Bait.
All I've managed to find out about anonymity is that you can be uniquely ID'd from fullsizing your browser and from what add ons you have, so stastically the more you have the more unique you are. (hardened) firefox with Ublock Origin, NoScript, Canvascape and Decentraleyes installed is a common loadout. By which I mean, I heard it on Jow Forums more than once.

i'm a noob who is very familiar with C# and i want to get into android development. my understanding was that android apps are written in java but i just installed android studio and the default language is kotlin, should i go with this instead? are there any recommended tutorials ?
