Tablet as a laptop replacement?

My shitty old laptop is starting to die on me and I'm entertaining the idea of getting a tablet instead of a laptop.
I don't use my laptop for work, and I don't use it for anything more intense than videos, web browsing, editing photos, writing documents and maybe games (and honestly, I'm not playing vidya as much as I used to a few years ago, any video games I'd want to play can wait until I reach my desktop).
With that in mind, I thought I might as well get a tablet.
That being said, I can't help but feel as if I'm overlooking something, and that's where I need help, I need help coming up with things I'd give up if were I to switch to a tablet.
One thing that comes to mind is a keyboard, even though my cheap, shitty ideapad's keyboard isn't anything to write home about, I suspect it's still better than those keyboard covers high end tablets are sporting nowadays, and I do like typing a lot. (and carrying around a regular sized bluetooth keyboard with a tablet seems like a shitty solution)
The other is size, while a tablet's smaller size is ideal for carrying it around, long term use would probably get a little old (compared to my current laptop, which has a 14" screen).
I did consider one of those laptops that have a touchscreen that goes all the way back, but it seems like it'd just either be a heavy, awkward tablet or a laptop that has a feature that costs more and I never use.

Anything else? please try to convince me one way or the other!

Consider a small touchscreen Chromebook with a 360° screen hinge. You on can use android apps, Linux software if you can be bothered, and get a proper keyboard, browser and mouse support etc. Tablets are great but typing on them, even with a keyboard, is plain shit.

wouldn't a chromebook have the same problem I mentioned in the OP? namely that it would just be big, thick and awkward to use?

If you get an Android tablet, half of your apps/websites will think you're on a phone & will look fucked on a 10" screen.

If you get an Apple tablet, you've just spent laptop money anyway.

If you get a Windows tablet, you've already bought a laptop.

The moral: just get a cheap laptop instead.

but windows 10 is tablet/laptop
i know the keyboard shits itself but like
it looks nice

but yeah maybe a cheaper laptop that will die
on 2 years (like surface laptop) may be better

Chine

>If you get an Android tablet, half of your apps/websites will think you're on a phone & will look fucked on a 10" screen.
yes, but if a website looks bad I could always request the desktop version, it's only 2 taps away, and I think apps would be good enough, at least the ones I see myself using.
>If you get an Apple tablet, you've just spent laptop money anyway.
Well, sure, but it's still a tablet which would be lighter and easier to handle than a laptop.
(not that I see myself buying an apple anything, shit's expensive)
>If you get a Windows tablet, you've already bought a laptop.
But if I could remove the keyboard and have just the screen, it would be good enough, I don't necessarily want android, the something that is physically a tablet.
>The moral: just get a cheap laptop instead.
But if I'm going to get a laptop, why make it a cheap one? I'll get something solid.

The question isn't money, but convenience.

I'm strongly considering getting a low specced Surface tablet or something, but my L440 doesn't show any signs of dying anytime soon. Also I don't like the small screen size and crappy type cover, but that could be remedied by sticking it on the back of the Nexdock I ordered whenever that gets here.
There are by the way some guys who make a rigid detachable keyboard for surface pros, which holds the tablet so you don't need the kickstand.

iPad Pro is quite usable with iPadOS now that you can actually have infinite 'windows' of the same apps open. And if you're willing to wait a bit, the 2018 model will get cheaper as the 2019 is announced. Get yourself a Smart Folio and you should be set. Wouldn't recommend the Smart Keyboard over the free on-screen keyboard unless physical keys are truly THAT important to you, but I find it easy to get used to the on-screen keys. Wouldn't recommend Pencil either unless you're into doodling or writing by hand.
Only real problem is the lack of ports. You only get one USB-C port. That's it. You can remedy this with an all-in-one USB-C hub that comes with a shitload of inputs (you can find a few that all support USB A, USB C, microSD, standard SD and HDMI). Other than that, it's actually pretty doable and packs a bit of horsepower. It's really good as a casual shitposting machine.
You could also just get a Surface, but the Surface is literally just a laptop with a detachable keyboard. If you're going to get a Surface, you're better off with a Surface Laptop or Surface Book than a standard Surface Pro or Surface Go, since the Pro throttles to Hell and back and the Go is bordernline unusable once you upgrade to full Windows.
Pixel Slate is also an option if you're into masochism.

Both the Surfaces and Pixel Slate have better keyboards than the iPad Pro but the iPad Pro is pretty fun to use otherwise.

I had very similar needs and just got a Surface Pro a few days ago. Seems pretty good so far, and was comparable in price to 2-in-1 laptops with similar specs and size. I got mine at Costco and it came with the keyboard and stylus for the same price most places charge for the tablet alone. As for screen size, the aspect ratio helps a lot, it means the screen feels a lot bigger than the 12.3" spec would suggest, and the high resolution lets you fit more content into that same space as well. It feels less annoyingly tiny than the 13" 1080p laptop it replaced.

The keyboard, by the way, is shockingly good for what it is. It's no classic full-size Thinkpad keyboard but it's better than what you'll find on many traditional laptops of similar size and weight. You can kind of feel a bit of flex in the cover when typing in certain positions (especially if you try using it in your lap) but it doesn't seem to affect typing speed or accuracy.

I'm in a pretty similar boat although I do use my laptop for work and typing is the main thing I do, hence keyboard is my largest concern too, and decided to go for 11" iPad Pro in September (because I hope they might introduce a better keyboard cover or 3rd parties might find a way to do something with new mouse support)

My reasoning for the switch (beyond "muh aesthetics") is the simplicity and added functionality with a new form factor. Being able to sketch with the pen and fuck around with music production for the fun of it on a touchscreen sounds more enjoyable than anything a laptop could provide; and the more limited multitasking actually looks like a pro due fewer distractions. Since the OS is more limited it'll require simplification of the workflow, which sounds doable in theory and a good thing in the long run. The ability to hold the thing in one hand and work from any position (or abuse it as an e-reader) sounds like something that could open up new ways as well.

But again, my reasons are build on the theory and for all I know, the limitations might turn out more crippling in reality than they sound. Besides, I'm used to devices with smaller screens, my first laptop was 12", then I went to 13'3 and back to 12", so while a small screen is unlikely to bother me, it might be a big deal to you. Also I have zero interest in vidya.

>If you get an Apple tablet, you've just spent laptop money anyway.
They got dirt cheap now that vendors are selling the 2018 stock in preparations for the update. The 11 64GB version is just 800 bucks with a pen, and then depending on the keyboard cover it can go to 850 or a bit under 1k, which isn't cheap by any means but how many laptops with hi res screens do you get for much less even before considering the superior aspect ratio and much lower weight/size?

>If you get a Windows tablet, you've already bought a laptop.
The tablet format just isn't the same, even if they can do the same things.

youtube.com/watch?v=HOh6d_r63Bw&t=464s

wouldn't ever buy a low specced tablet

>Apple is trying to blow iOS up into 'the future of computing.'
>Microsoft is trying to crunch Windows down into tablet formfactor.
What the fuck is Google going for?

>Surface Laptop
Shit with outdated ports covered by horrible materials which will look like shit in a few years. Besides pretty much every compact mobile device will throttle when you do something that has a constant load, the Surface Laptop as much as the Surface.

Can someone explain how the performance is THAT shit? My ancient Galaxy Tab runs better and it's from fucking 2012.

Seems more likely that Google fucked up something that can be easy fixed with an update.

>The 11 64GB version is just 800 bucks
Don't buy that no matter how cheap it is. Apple shouldn't even be selling a 64GB version of anything, really. 64 is going to get filled up in a matter of months, 128 is doable, 256 is a sweet spot, 512 is maybe a bit wasteful for casual use and 1TB is just ridiculous

"All you need is a browser."

>Chrome

It's funny how things change.

>"All you need is a browser. And maybe a couple of webapps. Actually fuck it, you need Android apps too. And you know what else? Fuck it, Linux programs as well. You need everything. You need all the things."

>64 is going to get filled up in a matter of months
With what? I'm mostly doing text work, all of my project folders together are under 100mb. After converting my music to AAC, the main part is like 50gb, which would leave me with maybe 5gb, which is like nothing but should be perfectly sufficient. I'm not going to run around with an iPad to shoot 4k videos or pictures.

My reaction folder alone takes up 50 GB. Porn is another 73 GB.

Attached: will smith in a wig.jpg (300x300, 52K)

>reaction folder
I don't do that shit. Besides, why not putting the stuff into Google Pictures? Unlimited storage and it's not like you have to worry about your privacy when it comes to that shit.

>Porn is another 73 GB.
Mine is twice as large but I never put porn on devices dedicated for work. Come on, one reasons I go for a tablet is fewer distractions. If I had to, I could stream shit from my desktop either way.

>why not putting the stuff into Google Pictures?

>paying monthly to store your photos on someone else's computer
or
>saving all of your files in a lower quality because it's free
Neither sounds quite as good as just saving them offline, to your own computer.

>The 11 64GB version is just 800 bucks with a pen
That's what I paid for my Surface Pro WITH pen and keyboard and it's a real computer with a full OS, an i5 and 8gb of RAM, and twice the onboard storage plus the ability to expand easily with a MicroSD card or low-profile flash drive. (I went with the latter and got a 256gb Sandisk for $32.)

You sound you just need to get another laptop. Maybe splurge and get something nice.

>paying monthly
Not the drive, the Pictures thing. It's unlimited storage (unless the stuff is huge) and completely free. And the quality is only lower when we're talking about really large photos (16MP). For reaction images or screenshots or basically anything that doesn't need to be private, it's a fantastic fucking option.

Hell, one could even use it for porn since they upped their limit for videos to 1080p, unless you got tons of 4k stuff. Besides, obviously you do keep a backup or two. No one is suggesting to trust the cloud.

>an i5 and 8gb of RAM
You say this like it matters. A12X shits on mobile i5 easy (there is even a close to 1-1 benchmark with Civ V where the iOS port is the same game) and iOS does better with 4gb than Windows with 8gb. (Although it might become a downside in the long run)

As for the rest, fair points but not too relevant for my usage needs. Besides on the other hand the iPad is smaller, much lighter, has almost twice the battery life and has a more modern port (which still isn't widely used but nice if you got more usb C stuff already)

Can the Surface Pro run Linux?
If I'm going to get a tablet with regular laptop architecture, I might as well run Linux on it.

>If you get an Apple tablet, you've just spent laptop money anyway.
For $900 the 256GB iPad Pro with keyboard is actually very nice. You won't find a lot of windows laptops in that price range with a high-resolution 120hz screen with high brightness and good colors and 10hr+ battery life, in fact you probably won't find any. It's THE high-end tablet. The closest thing is the surface pro 6 but that thing is rife with throttling, pen jitter, and Windows's shitty tablet ecosystem by which I mean there is no ecosystem and it's barely usable as a casual tablet but makes for a decent laptop, but then you're getting more of a laptop experience rather than a tablet that can replace a laptop.

The HP Elite x2 g1 is like 5 years old. They're on g4 now, which starts at like $2000

There are guides to installing linux on those and getting all the features to work.

I'm keeping an eye out for Samsung's Tab S6 which is supposed to come out in less than a month.
Generally speaking it seems like most manufacturers stopped trying to make truly high end android tablets, I'm glad someone is still trying to push it.

Attached: samsunggalaxytabs6.jpg (770x519, 48K)

I hope they don't fuck with the keyboard design like that. The current keyboard design makes it fairly decent for lap use while on the shitter.

Problem is Samsung's android solution is basically a custom OS and they're horrible at software. Samsung is still essentially a dinosaur hardware company, they see IT/software as a sink rather than a real source of innovation. I know a lot of former Samsung guys, dim as they are they were replaced by even cheaper pajeets. It's going to go the path of Sony sooner or later unless they stop now and really focus on software and hand it back to Americans.

Just like Sony, companies who have their governments by the balls won't have any reasons to innovate until it's far too late.

Yeah, problem is it's HP so you're gonna need that repairability a lot more often than you ought to. I'm still fucking pissed at them about my Spectre X360, I'll never buy their shit again.

I have the s5e and it is fucking phenomenal. Picture in picture multitasking, fantastic edge to edge AMOLED screen, very fast, Linux on Dex making it essentially a miniature laptop if you want it. I also have an iPad 2017 that I almost never use in lieu of this thing. If the S6 is even better then run and get it.
>Problem is Samsung's android solution is basically a custom OS
I used to be a die-hard vanilla AOSP user. The s5e changed that. Just the PiP multi-tasking is reason enough but then add in Dex and fuck AOSP.

Attached: 1559099815956.jpg (1507x1834, 1.14M)

>Linux on Dex making it essentially a miniature laptop if you want it.
please elaborate, does this mean I can run linux applications on the tablet?

Based

Isn't dex a container managed by android? Didn't it cause any RAM issues?

Shit runs like a champ man. I thought it would be slow or choppy but, no. It runs great. Even shitty firefox scrolls smoothly. This model has 4GB of RAM and I haven't noticed any issues at all. The new S6 I believe can be bought with 8GB. For portable Linux use mixed with Android apps, that is PLENTY. This is like a tablet from the future, seriously nothing remotely touches it.
Also, the S6 has a keyboard accessory with integrated touchpad so with Linux on Dex, it's literally a super thin AMOLED laptop.

Attached: 1563791049922.jpg (2024x1518, 1.45M)

that's fucking neat as shit, you absolutely turned me on the idea of getting an S6.

Yeah it rules man. I can only imagine the s6 is even better. The CPU in the latter is much faster for sure and this s5e is already very fast.
I trade crypto and write my own bot, alert, and charting software and just run it right here on the tablet. Chill in Sbux and trade with it. I know I sound like a shill but I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Attached: 1536655304606.jpg (2024x1518, 995K)

iPad Pro is fucking incredible but I would never recommend getting it or any tablet as a replacement for a laptop. It's just not equivalent.

Did you tried ipad OS?

Back to your designated shiting street iJeet.

Attached: 1545758377731.png (1536x2048, 256K)

Windows tablets: can be good, are basically the same as a touchscreen windows laptop with minor form factor differences
Android tablet: shit, especially as a laptop replacement
iPad: Good, and by that I mean all of them, from the 1k pro to the 250 base model (though both of those are getting updated soon, the 500ish air and mini aren't and they're good as well)
Kindle/amazon tablet: shit, not including the ink display readers which aren't computer replacements in any way

iPads have never been observed being throttled by updates

Is the pro confirmed for an update or just two base models? I'm seriously about to buy the Pro but wondering if I should just wait a month.

Granted it's anecdotal evidence, but so is your pic.
We got my mom an ipad back in like, fuck, 2014? and it still pretty usable, kind of slow, but she's fine using it, and when it comes to tablets it's not bad at all.

You have never been observed using a toilet.

>iPad: Shit, and by that I mean all of them, from the 1k pro to the 250 base model
Fixed.

Attached: 1536843300962.jpg (907x1242, 266K)

How does gnome behave?

There are only rumours either way, and according to these there are like 7 new models coming, most are upgrades, so how likely is Pro not getting an update?

On the other hand, why would it even matter. They aren't going to redesign the thing after just one year, the stupid triple camera is only a killer feature for the 2-3 people and A12X is already on the level of the best laptop chips.

>tablet
>good detachable keyboard

I've got what you need, OP.

Attached: IMG_20190823_121704-1612x1209.jpg (1612x1209, 255K)

and that is?

About like how you'd expect. GPU acceleration is in effect so no tearing or other weirdness. Auto resizing when you pull a window to the sides works, resizing a window with the mouse is smooth. It's very similar to a regular laptop just with a great screen, ridiculous battery life, ARM processor and uncanny thinness.

ThinkPad Helix

Attached: IMG_20190823_122238-1612x1209.jpg (1612x1209, 287K)

>detachable tablet thinkpad keyboard
I'm chubbing up already

Yea but only 4GB on the pros

Wacom digitizer + pen too.

Given how long it took them to even get there, I wouldn't expect more before 2020 when Adobes software is coming.

>on the level of the best laptop chips.
This is what street shitters actually believe.

Attached: 1543536649512.webm (1280x546, 2.79M)

A quick look online tells me that the closest thing in production now is called a ThinkPad X1 Tablet.
Are these any good? pretty pricey, but it IS a proper laptop architecture.
Any opinions on those? how's Linux on one of these things?

Current gen X1 Carbon is probably overkill. Find one from 2 generations ago if you're just gonna casually use it for everyday tasks.

Dell 2-in-1 convertible.

Have we reached a point where you're literally not even allowed to say nice things about product The Hivemind (TM) doesn't like?

Now THAT'S what I call mental illness.

>have we reached a point... not allowed to say nice things?
Yeah, we reached it in, like 2010? at the very latest?

>beta testing shit when you can just get any 2-in-1 and install whatever distro you want

Jesus, deez bezels.
At least you're taste in music is aight.

There will be a time when you need to do something that only a pc can do and then you will wonder why the fuck you picked a tablet over it. Also windows tablets suck ass.

>There will be a time when you need to do something that only a pc can do
Such as?

I'm thinking about getting a s5e for both drawing and programming, would you recommend it?

Attached: 1564713690092.jpg (640x628, 103K)

Holy shit those bezels. I have an x86 powered 2-in-1 actually and it's aight. Runs all my Linux shit in Crostini and just recently got the update for GPU acceleration, sound and the rest of the works. I use it sometimes when I'm out and about but I prefer the regular tablet.
>drawing
It doesn't have active stylus support so you may be disappointed. The S6 will support the active stylus though. For programming, it's great. Really depends on what you're doing though. You won't be developing iOS apps on it obviously but for web shit it's great. If you want to do x86 desktop stuff in C++ or whatever you'll have to cross-compile since the tablet has an ARM proc. I mostly work in Python so I'm good.

Attached: 1554470236771.jpg (1518x2024, 1.18M)

Surface 3 is 4 years old now, that bezel is to pretty normal tbqh.

Attached: 1523300478755.jpg (1457x1080, 633K)

I was just kiddin with ya man. I had a Surface Pro 4 at one point and it was cool but the damn thing kept getting stuck in standby. Just a black screen when I tried to get it going. I finally got sick of it and took it back to Costco. That was the end of my windows tablet career. Now I either get a real tablet or the ChromeOS 2 in 1. That HP was only $400 at Best Buy and it has the same screen as the Pixel laptop so really high res and 4:3 (I think). The keyboard is fantastic for a chiclet, and it even came with an active pen I never use. The CPU is mobile but it's core derived so at least as fast as the SandyBridge in my t420s stinkpad which is legit.
I'll try a Windows tablet again when the prices come down and the software quality goes up. Also apps. Gotta have good from the ground up touch apps like Android and iOS. Otherwise no deal. And my HP runs Linux via Crostini, Android stuff, as well as the usual Chrome OS stuff. I'm happy.

Buy a fucking iPad you won't regret it.

You will regret

Attached: 1566478818513.jpg (2024x1518, 1.24M)

The text looks so damn clear.

Besides, who in their right mind would by the old shit? They stepped their game up massive with gen 3 Pro.

>Besides, who in their right mind would by the old shit? They stepped their game up massive with gen 3 Pro.
The problem is as soon as you step out of Apple's idea of what a tablet workflow is like you run into a brick wall of limitations.
>Want to develop an application on your tablet that will also run on your tablet?
Forget it. You can do this on both Windows and Android tablets though.
>Want to run an application on your tablet that isn't made with the blessed toolkit and framework?
Forget it. But with Windows you can run literally anything and with Android you can run a lot of stuff. I happen to have a Python script I run in a Termux tab that alerts me on the status of my crypto bot. When something gets bought or sold or my alerts trip, the app alerts me and gives me an interactive readout. With iOS, yes you can make Python scripts but you can't run them for more than 10 minutes in the background making it worthless.
>Need real mouse support?
Sure with Windows and Android but with iOS, even with 13, there are too many limitations.
As far as the Pro vs. the iPad 2018, the Pro is faster and has pen support. Those are quantitative improvements at best and do not change the fundamental limited nature of the device itself.
I have an iPad, a ChromeOS 2in1, a Windows 2in1 (that I don't even use), an Android tablet, an iPhone, and a Pixel phone so I'm well versed in the relative merits. iOS is slick and it's fast and it has "clear text" but it is fundamentally limited for a power user. Netflix machine? Sure. But even then, the Samsung s5e is superior as the screen has infinite contrast where blacks are black. Unlike the iPad Pro.
So, uh, there it is. The iPad is good but it is just another tablet and it is not the best.

>The problem is as soon as you step out of Apple's idea of what a tablet workflow is like you run into a brick wall of limitations.
That's true for all of their iDevices for sure but I'd assume people on here would know that. If someone wants to do the stuff you mentioned, an iPad would be indeed a shitty choice. I doubt most tablet buyers have these tasks in mind though.

>Need real mouse support
And their new iPad OS solution doesn't suggest they care about it; but again, buying an iPad one would go in knowing all that.

>it is fundamentally limited for a power user
Now that's a bit too much. If the power user is a programmer? Abso-fucking-lutely. If they intend to do something along the lines of media work? Different story. The pen alone creates a huge gap between iPad and the other tablets, if you're going to use it for your workflow.

>the Samsung s5e is superior as the screen has infinite contrast where blacks are black.
iPad screen is brighter and the battery life is better, so not sure about superior overall.

>The iPad is good but it is just another tablet and it is not the best.
Well, no shit. Best depends on the needs of the users and only total brainlets would claim that hardware X is best for all.

/thread

OP, just get an ultrabook.

I use an iPad Pro 2018 for art stuff (Apple is overpriced, but Wacom is worse), but I can see it replacing a lightweight laptop.

Smart Folio keyboard looks like a scam but the cheaper alternatives look like scams as well.

>I doubt most tablet buyers have these tasks in mind though
They do tho. A lot of hardcore macfacs want to use the iPad pro exclusively will admit it. But they still prefer to use an iPad and a Macbook than a Windows 2-in-1 tho.

>>it is fundamentally limited for a power user
>Now that's a bit too much. If the power user is a programmer? Abso-fucking-lutely. If they intend to do something along the lines of media work? Different story. The pen alone creates a huge gap between iPad and the other tablets, if you're going to use it for your workflow.
Admittedly the moniker "power user" is an umbrella term but since we're on Jow Forums and all I had the typical Jow Forumsentleman in mind. Maybe you wanna program for your raspberry pi, maybe you wanna run some scripts, mess around with openCV, download and run some torrents, whatever. iPad is not the OS for you. That's all I was getting at. If you like your iPad then more power to you. I don't particularly care for mine cuz it can't do the cool shit I want but that's me.
>iPad screen is brighter and the battery life is better, so not sure about superior overall.
Pic related is both tablets in a pitch black room. The difference is negligible but what I can tell you is "black" on the iPad is actually a dark grey. On the Samsung, it's literally pitch black. That makes a HUGE difference. There is absolutely no comparison, the display on the Samsung makes the iPad look old and busted. I literally have both and switch back and forth. I can't stand the screen on the iPad after looking at the Samsung. Like I have to wait 30 minutes before I can even pick it up just to adjust. As far as battery life, again having both, they both last all day and much more. The Samsung charges a hell of a lot faster though so there is that.

Do you have both devices in your possession at this very moment like I do or are you basing your opinion on what others have said?

*forgot the pic of both tablets.

Attached: 1541093074952.jpg (2024x1518, 627K)

I googled "black square". The same image is displayed on both devices. Seriously. I think that about sums up my thoughts on the relative display quality.

Attached: 1563397752503.jpg (2024x1518, 1.17M)

>Smart Folio keyboard looks like a scam but the cheaper alternatives look like scams as well.
This looks like the largest weakness for it at this time. The Smart Folio is nice weight wise but limited to a few angles and doesn't even have functional key or backlight while costing insane money for what it offers; cheaper alternatives make it as heavy as a fucking MBP and the way they connect to it looks embarrassing.

Doubt they will release the thing they patented in which the keys serve as a trackpad anytime soon either.

>Do you have both devices in your possession at this very moment like I do or are you basing your opinion on what others have said?
Reviews yo. So less direct than yours but based on cold, hard numbers. And I generally talking about the ones from 2018. Before the design alone was too off-putting, and I didn't care too much about them in the first place. Now with an updated design that isn't painfully ugly, the 120hz meme and iPad OS that offers a bit more than a large iPhone, they look a lot more viable.

>display
Obviously OLED blacks are on another level but if you're using the stuff under "normal" light, the benefit becomes less apparent while having a better max brightness can make or break it.
>battery life
Here is where objective numbers really shine compared to "last all day and much more" and while the Samsung tab isn't bad by any means, the numbers from iPad Pro are fucking insane. (10 vs 15h wifi browsing) Though I guess one could get more depending on content with muh OLED screen. Charging is fair point, although easy to change with a non shit charger for the iPad.

>But they still prefer to use an iPad and a Macbook
Sounds like they also understand that there are limitations then. Just because they want to do more with it, doesn't mean they don't get what they can and can't do. And specially macfags are the last ones to be surprised over some stupid iOS limitation.

Holy kek.

>Reviews yo.
Come on man. I use both devices regularly and have posted pics of both devices. Here's why reviews are trash. Reviewers use the respective device for an afternoon or a couple of days at most. You cannot form an opinion relevant to a user that will have the device for years in that short a time. It's the honeymoon period. I go through it myself. I know that my feelings about a new device are meaningless for the first two weeks. It's only when you live with a device for a while that you really know its worth.
You quoting reviews is beneath me even responding to but listen, I am not mad at you since you don't have anything else to go on. Just know that what you are reading is just somebody else's biased opinion on something they have very little screen time with. Simple as that.
I on the other hand have had both of these devices for many many months and I promise you the Samsung screen blows the iPad away, the battery life is indistinguishable in practice, the Samsung is thinner, lighter, has more vibrant contrast, has better sounding (stereo!) speakers, does more, runs Linux, runs shit in the background more than 10 minutes, and on and on and on.
The iPad on the other hand has a screen that reminds me of the one in my t420s thinkpad. But only after I've used the Samsung for a while. Otherwise it's okay.
Take what I'm saying to heart regarding reviews though. They mean very little other than a reviewer's first impression which don't count for hardly shit compared to a real unbiased user with months of hands on use.
Bonus pic: reading on this thing in a dark room is God tier. iPad is trash tier at the same thing. How many of your "reviews" talk about that?

Was holding a brand new tablet in the hands the other night.
Thought in my head: "Fuck this'd be a real nice thing to have.

>You quoting reviews is beneath me even responding to
That was a little over the top. Strike it from the record. I don't really mean to come off as an asshole

Generally you're right about reviews, hence I pulled notebookcheck, these guys would make most Jow Forums spergs look like normies and really go in into the details, and provide clear cut numbers for tons of standardised test, making them pretty good to compare different devices. Should've at least opened the link before you went on about how biased the stuff is. They even mentioned your point about the shitty blacks on the iPad: "Moreover, black tones look more like dark grey when the display is at maximum brightness; reducing this eliminates that effect though."

And sure there are tons of small and big thing one notices during long term use but it's still easier to deal with numbers than purely subjective experiences. Besides, your iPad isn't quite the 2018 one either way.

>the Samsung is thinner, lighter
Barely so and it has a smaller screen too, so there is that. As for contrasts, obviously. Ditto for the software. The speaker claim sounds big, they improved theirs a lot in 2018 and according to muh review numbers, they are louder while iPad speakers are better at everything else. Then again, if we're talking about fucking tablet speakers, we've clearly moved past any reason and arguing for the sake of it. Might as well start creaming about tablet cameras.

I have the acer chromebook 14 and it's as thin as a macbook air used to be.

>iPad Pro is quite usable
And it's foldable, let's not forget!
