I don't really like Discord's privacy. They do not have end-to-end encryption, which means that Discord employees and governments could read our messages if they wanted to.

Well, AES-256 is very strong (it would take thousands of years to brute-force), but I don't think my friends are tech-savvy enough or care enough to go through all the trouble to install BetterDiscord and an encryption plugin within it.

Pretty sure discords data centers are designed to be pulled by NSA. Of course I can't prove it, but it seems obvious because of how much data is sent through discord unencrypted.

It really is just a way to send strings of text between people, so it would have nothing to do with people becoming gay. It is probably just the fact that their writing style naturally changed when using a new chat software.

discord is shit. it's designed to be an echo chamber/safe space. you don't have groups like on telegram. you have "servers" and those servers can ban you from connecting if they want. Everything is by design invite only making searching for a group a huge pain in the ass. you have to search google and reddit for invite links where on Telegram or IRC you just search for it in your client and you're there.

It's inferior to Telegram in every possible way.

Language among teens? I don't know about that, but as much as I hate Discord for what it has become from a centralized and proprietary perspective, if we don't understand why we can't properly fight back.

They came in with a bunch of venture capital funding under the startup " we will get everyone using it first for free and awesome, then make money once they can't give us up" idea. Discord basically centralized and iterated on chat, VoIP/video ( both 1 to 1 and 1 to many), overlays, and a bunch of quality of life shit like emoji reactions or whatnot.

Any idiot could make "their" own server and you only needed a single discord account, all free. They also spent a fortune on marketing in the gaming world and got a lot of developers, streamers, content creators onboard and integrated. Consider how Patreon tiers and Twitch sub levels can Grant access to special Discord channels etc.

Their money and influence was a large part of it, but part was also that prior to the Discord/slack modern rich media messenger era things were kinda separate. Gaming VOIP was handled by crap like Ventrilo, Teamspeak, and best of all Mumble - servers hosted/owned by some in a distributed fashion, others connected with copying and pasting an address or password etc..and it just was exclusive for gaming VoIP . This was admittedly a lot more cumbersome compared to discord invite links and whatnot.

So there is a lot going on with it's popularity , some warranted other less so . Today however we have better alternatives . Matrix.org network and the Riot.im client is the best as it has a similar ui And all the features plus more. Others like Wire and Signal can also fill the gaps .

I watched this happen to one of my oldest communities as well, we all used irc but now they use discord. It makes me think of them as sellout losers, we were always against these platforms.

The only thing discord did was obfuscate moderation and user vetting. You have server owners/mods who run multiple servers across multiple communities leading to a meta-level control of discourse and users from unknown sources able to brigade servers.

If you want to be paranoid or sociological, both these factors allow uwufags to use discord as a force multiplier in small servers or control servers in larger instances. Although really uwu culture is an MSN legacy if I'm not mistaken and has proliferated for over a decade for other reasons

That's the thing though, that really isn't the case. Most of the time, people will meet each other on these kinds of servers then decide to make their own private server to talk in, some of which will become completely disconnected from the originating server where their ideas can just echo forever. The number of private servers of this kind vastly outnumbers the number of gateway public servers you're talking about.
Side note, the fucking social drama that goes on in private Discord servers fucking hurts to see sometimes, and I keep getting to hear about/see that shit thanks to my autistic friend. Don't try to make friends on Discord, or at least try to meet them irl asap if they seem legit, that shit always just crumbles over time as the friend group grows and opinions change.

Question: Does discord show or announce to others if you're looking at it? I never used it because it doesn't allow anonymous viewing, but some fuckers evidently think it's a good thing to delete their site and use it as their sole online presence.

It's easy to set up, easy to download, easy to join. It's very simple for anyone to set up. It's completely free so anyone can use it. It has an official app for phones.

The biggest downside of Discord is that they have a shit privacy policy. Your data is how you pay to use Discord. Other programs like ventrilo or teamspeak will require you to set up a server and host it through either your own machine or another service that will do it for you.

You have to join a server to view what happens on the server. Your username will show on the right hand side with all the other server users. If you're set to offline mode (you can still view and interact with all servers) you'll be put to the bottom of the user list as if you didn't have discord open.
There is no way to be part of a discord server and not show up in the user list. Large enough servers will make it difficult to notice you in the list, however.

The centralization issue is an issue by itself and impacts every other. The Internet, especially the social elements thereof, is at its worst when a handful of companies control discourse near entirely - Facebook and Twitter are good examples, with Discord now bringing chat/voip/messenger/gaming etc... all into another centralized platform. This is harmful to discourse it increases power and control of the company in charge exponentially and makes it harder to switch away without the "everyone/everything is using X" issue. Still, it is worth trying to separate as early as possible.

It monetized from the start with the startup "take a lot of venture capital, rook in a bunch of users with lots of benefits, then exploit them bit by bit for huge ROI". This comes in many ways but part of it is your data - with the proprietary and centralized nature where you go and what you say is easy to be monitored etc. I hoped that their Discord Nitro service and partnerships with other applications would be enough they wouldn't need to rape your privacy/info, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Also, Discord's game store is a huge shitbox given they are trying to push Epic-style store-exclusives-by-contract which is never, ever acceptable. This monetization is probably part of the reason that Discord can't be properly open sourced or encrypted.

Ultimately, not what we should be seeking. Matrix / Riot is the closest alternative, yet open and federated. Fediverse in general is worth it.
