When did the "Wild West" era of the internet officially end in your opinion?

When did the "Wild West" era of the internet officially end in your opinion?

when people stopped liking annoying orange and fred

Officially, 2007. With the closing of Geocities if you want to be pedantic.

when people started getting v& I guess
I wasn't there, I'm just assuming

Arrival of facebook. So... 2006?

After 2005?

September 1993

Probably before 2000, but it was done and dead my 2000. People have just fetishised that part of the internet's history so much that you'd expect it was in that state for longer.

Captchas and archives on Jow Forums.

Also, that year that every single business and/or attention whore decided they needed a facebook and a twitter (circa 2010.) Mass invasion of normies and women.

I'm going with 2007 due to the launch of the iphone and twitter being shoved down our throats by the mainstream media.

~2007, and further declined with the mass death of personal websites and discussion forums at the hands of social media.

I would say when it started becoming main stream and dsl/cable internet started rolling out to consumers.

When Wikipedia started moving away from anyone can edit and made people "autoconfirm" and "extended confirm" their accounts to do any contributing to any contentious topic.

I remember when I could write about anything I want without being reverted by autists.

The literal wild west internet died with broadband
However I'd agree that 2007 was the last year of the free internet

Not yet. It will end when formal verification is routine part of software development.

some time shortly after 2005 when all the normie websites like reddit, youtube and facebook came out. it was the beginning of the end. the appearance of smartphones around that time accelerated everything too. before that time things like the internet, technology and computers have been viewed as nerd stuff and nobody touched it. then all of a sudden everybody and his dog was online and boy did i despise those fucking normies. they destroyed everything.

In ten years people will say it ended around now.

Late 90's, anyone who tells you otherwise is not to be believed. We've had a few things happen since then(Silk Road, pirate bay, libgen, etc) but not as wild west as back then.

Late 90's
>Napster shakes up the recording industry
>DCMA is a thing. Fuck i remember going onto ebay in 1998 and seeing burned PSX games that you could buy for 10 bucks a pop.
>FBI launched Carnivore in 1997

Esentially after that the internet started to degrade rapidly. Not because technological progress and rules were enacted, but because of the low IQ new participants to the internet.

We will never have a wild west internet with normies. All the cool shit right now in internet is IPFS, blockchain, and decentralization..alll shit which requires high IQ to understand and operate.

Objectively this Before that, the internet was close enough to '4 NURDZ OWNLEE'

What about shit like MySpace? That shit's purpose was hook ups and listening to new bands. YouTube came around in 05 too. Tons of flash games and everyone knew the internet was for porn. I'd argue that is right, and the end of the wild west is closer to 2000 than 07. However, I would say the current cancer of the internet went full steam in 07, as Facebook picked up in popularity, Tumblr was launched, and you had Chanology.

Myspace was cancer, but at least you had to sit down in front of a computer to use it.

Even this shit site is getting stale with the influx of shit quality posts from shit-tiered zoomers and faggots who are too edgey for reddit but too normie for og Jow Forums. This site's been diluted by these cretins over the years.

True, and it was a ton of people's first exposure to HTML. Nothing like waiting 5 minutes for some retard's myspace page to load because of the insane bloat... but now that's every website thanks to javascript cancer.

2008

2004-2005. Disagree with me, I dare you.

With the popularity of Google. A single popularly used search engine for close to 15 years, serving the same few sites at the top of the search results to everyone.

I wanna argue that whilst major companies appearing on the internet (FaceBook, Reddit) was indeed the beginning of the end, YouTube carried the wild west spirit for quite a while (up until 2013 at least), with tonnes of independent channels creating unique content.

Introduction of Myspace and subsequently Facebook.

2010

Youtube became the one platform for almost all video content. Before youtube, there was a huge variety of video sharing sites. Vlogs, funny clips, cats, weeb shit, all had their own video sharing sites. Once youtube showed up, everything moved there, with some smaller ones just being a mirror or for people banned from youtube.

The pre-web internet was not a wild west.

2008 or 2009

Basically the bland/boring facebook became top dog paired with the masses having internet 24/7 on-the-go thanks to the first Iphone.

> installing ZeroNet
It's just getting started!

Attached: index.jpg (186x186, 5K)

It probably started around 2005 and since 2010 it's complete cancer.

2006-2007
That's when the Google + Facebook tracking really took off and ruined the internet with targeted ads.

>Fuck i remember going onto ebay in 1998 and seeing burned PSX games that you could buy for 10 bucks a pop
That's still a thing on eastern european seller sites, if you're buying gaming consoles. Nobody gives a shit.

When myspace ended and facebook took over.

I know it was not Jow Forums but at least we could do some scrub coding on there and the internet felt so isolated from life.
It was basically our clubhouse how segregated people were online.

When they killed mp3.com

dont lose hope anons. the internet is just changing. here we have wild west. and for those retards who say its facebook year, how many of you are in facebook? im not

i'm not. never understood why people love this shit.
or maybe i'm just some weirdo. i don't know.

~2004

internet(www) was ment for information sharing world wide - researches, papers etc. People started to treat it like a shit. Its like same to give a monkey AK47 and watch what happens

I would say around 06-08 is when it started, and its decline has accelerated in the last 5 years now that normalfags and political interests are more involved.

in 10 years having an opinion will be considered a thought crime

Shut up kid.
