My previous laptop had an optical drive and I replaced it with an additional SSD, much more useful.

I can see your point but optical disks are being overshadowed by the cheaper, more secure, more portable nand flash like i have on my keychain USB drives. I have 2x32GB kingston drives for documents and if i really need the storage.
What i would care more about is the inclusion of a removable hard disk, M.2 Expansion and socketable RAM. Those upgrades are easily more important than an external physical spinning media reading and writing apparatus. If you can find a laptop that supports socketable Ryzen processors, then you've found nirvanna.
