ignore the neet linux freetards though

>under $500
You should spend at least 700-800 for a laptop that will last a few years

chinkpad

This. If your going to work, ignore all Linux posters. Modern Windows 10 clean install is more than capable.

T420 is fine as long as you don't plan to go on dates. Otherwise the latest shiny HP ultrabook shit or Boot Camp Mac.

t460s

Just watch the Linus Torvalds video. Its hosted by /ourdiet/ and Mr.handy

Anybody have recommendations for a budget of "unlimited" ? Or rather; does your dream laptop exist?

Surfaces' aren't the worst choice, but you should elaborate on what you want besides multi-tasking. Most laptops made in the last seven years with four or more cores can multi-task. Do you want something light? Get a X1 carbon that's older. Do you want to do anything other than watch YouTube videos, look up some reviews on Notebookcheck and make your decision. Honestly, for 500 dollars or less new, you're likely to get something with a god awful build quality that'll break in a couple of years. Consider buying a decent 15" used business model from HP or Dell if you want performance per dollar.

Also, you're not getting a Surface for under $800 new.

This. LOONIX is a hobbyist OS for losers who still live in they're mother's basements LMAO. Ask for genuine Microsoft software.

literally every tech blogger channel has a back to school laptop video.
IIRC the general rule of thumb is to get the base model laptop and upgrade it yourself. consider spending more than $500, or see if your Uni has a surplus/old stock store you can shop

also:
>heavy multitask
>under $500
>decent
pick two.

That one Razor laptop with three screens. My dream laptop would be that except without the gaymer LEDs and micro LED instead of LCD.

with infinite funds, build quality and how portable are what will determine it all.
Prob MBP, thinkpad P1/P52/P72 or whatever is top of the line thinkpad. would throw razer in their if the RBP is built well.

got myself an Alienware m18x in 2012 and it's still going strong as my daily driver.
Got my sister some $800 ASUS as she didn't want to spend any more and it's already being a burden

Spend the extra cash my dude, or buy second hand if you really can't splash for a good machine now

One of Eurocom monstrous behemoths like the Sky X9C. It's for people with too much money to spend and nowhere to go. The top configuration with two 2080ti's and all five SSD's at over 14,000 dollars would make Apple look generous. It's literally over 12 lbs. and a desktop disguised as a fuckhuge laptop. I already carry around an 8 lb. laptop, that thing would destroy any bag I currently have along with my back.

If it's a going back to school machine, all he needs for "heavy multitask" is multiple instances of Chrome, Onenote, word, and Outlook.

An obsolete GPU, i5, and moderate sized hard drive will be fine. Stop trying to justify your Vidya habit.

OP, you want all of this with as small and light of a formfactor as you can mananage while having a comfortable keyboard with the largest battery capacity. Maybe some kind of Mobile GPU if your willing to spend extra on a piece of glass that will be obsolete sooner than your ability to pay off your student debts.

Everything else is just being a closet videogame fggt trying to justify your procastination.

Used high end Precision or Zbook workstation.
NEVER spend less than $700 on new laptops.

>Stop trying to justify your Vidya habit
stop projecting your shit memes on me. a decent $500 laptop will most likely have 2 cores/4 thread and shit itself under load (ie updating windows and surfing internet is a nope)

Your only choice is to buy a Chromebook or an old Thinkpad.

>under $500
an used one.
preferably from someone you know personally and reasonably well.

I went with the Lenovo Legion series.

HP is ghey, but you can't go wrong with many ultrabooks

Macs are out of the question for college unless your rich.

Thinkpads are underrated workhorses that look more professional. Your in college, so start computing like an adult.

>that you can shift blame when the feds start questioning about all of that cp in there...

>plot twist: it's your dad's

I like razors design but the aluminum unibody they have feels like shit the first time i picked it up felt super cheap but it was the mercury white model i here those are made differently.

The best designed laptop right now are proably the white aero thats coming out and the new white alienware which actually looks really good but still has a bunch of flaws.

>buying second hand from your own dad
that stingy fucker deserves jail, for whatever charge.

dream laptop would be
>huge touchpad
>great keyboard
>great screen
>great build quality
>ultrathin, box design
so no not really

Razer Blade gets everything except ultrathin right

>ultrathin, box design
Pick one

If your struggling to multitask with $500 dollars on a modern Windows machine then your fucking retarded.

Buy a Thinkpad X2xx series with decent specs for $200 or $300 refurbished by a pro. Insist on an SSD and buy a new spare battery with it. It will do everything you need for school or office applications and play your old school Vidya. I bought mine for $100 and I've never dealt with severe slowdowns unless it was a game, windows update, or drive encryption. For your purposes, get a later model that has official Win 10 pro driver support. At $500, you can buy a near modern used business laptop that will more than exceed your needs unless your looking for a foldable entertainment box.

Clean install, config email, apply onedrive folder heiarchy for saved work, & save all your passwords in chrome. Set personalization to to dark mode. Then do not fuck with the settings. Do work

>save all your passwords in chrome
lmao neck yourself

Do you want a idiotic shiny electric dildo or an optimized tool to do a job?

Buy an underpowered Chromebook running recycled smartphone hardware or get a thinkpads. Or buy quality at a higher price than $500+. I would never touch a cheaply built hp consumer grade machine as they are underwhelming with bad build quality and preloaded with bloated trash that makes the machine
feel obsolete within a few months. If you buy one of those, at very least you should wipe the OS with a fresh install.

Chrome has 70% of the markershare. Your professor will ask for chrome in your online courses. You will stumble your password and waste the most expensive time of your life dealing with password recovery for your underdeveloped 18 -24 year old brain. You will waste hours and your grades will suffer when time management and workflow logistics is your biggest problem next to dickensian poverty. If you want speed, productivity minutes per hour is all that counts. It's all that matters in the real world.

Chrome is not interested in your homework, no matter what an unemployed leet wannabe NEET beard tells you.

Keepass just works. Why store your passwords on someone else's computer?

What is the best gaming laptop and why it's Razer Blade pro 17 >

>samefagging

honestly I bought my acer spin 3 from costco for what felt like $500 and its one of the best things I've ever owned

This. Basically nobody else makes laptops with desktop parts in them.

>razer
It's a great laptop for about 1.5 years, before it breaks.

If you have nowhere to go why not go all-out and get a full rack?

I only store trivial passwords on low sensitivity accounts on my browser because I have shit to do. I'm not a college kid with time to waste, and when I was there deadlines were hell. In the real world, your going to be fired for wasting time.

With modern systems, your greatest slowdown will be human error (your fault) or tinkering with 3rd party bullshit software. I've never gotten hacked, phished, or data stolen in my life. I have never been compromised. Who gives a shit about company breaches when that's the tech's job to provide the correct tools and operating proceedures. In my experience, I've tried Jow Forums tips and freetard tools that has only wasted my time.

If kneepass works, more power to you
Nobody cares about your freshman homework. They want your banking information, bad passwords, social security, and personal reset information. Be an autist, and you will lock yourself out. I recommend M$ + Google vanilla system tools along with Common Sense™ security.

Attached: 600px-Fatson_hentai.jpg (600x600, 109K)

I store my Keepass database on Google drive with the key file on my laptop and desktop. I've never been locked out from anything and I have enough backups of it that if all copies are lost I'll likely be dead as a result of some global catastrophe.
t. 3.7 undergrad, 4.0 graduate, $76k a year full-time bioengineer

Just look for a used laptop on eBay that is in mint condition, you're taking a gamble but so is trying to find something good at that price point

>Windows
Are you retarded, user?

No, he's just not autistic. Windows works fine, even Windows 10 as long as you practice common sense like saving files regularly and not jerking off to uptime.

A good laptop with a non maxq 1070 and good cooling for under $900. Even the $2500 laptops with 2080 maxq is only 25% faster.

Or just stop pretending you want a budget homework machine.

You want a Jow Forums toy for enthusiasts, and that's going to cost time and money to set up to your spec. It's going to neither be budget, a heavy multitasker, run well, or save you time.

Which is fine... It's your money and it will probably be a wonderful secure snappy machine. But if you want the best productivity experience™ with decent hardware on budget you're going to get a Thinkpad stripped to clean Win 10, a chrome browser, and Ms Office like it came out of a computer lab or company network.

Chinkpads run best with Linux.
Capable of spying on you.
HP are shit, macfags are the worst people.
Surface are macbooks for winfags.
Never!
Alienware are affectations for gaymers.
Silly eurotrash.
You're literaly grasping at straws.
No, you can do better than an old 10 pound chinkpad or a jewgle chromebook.
Crapintoshes are for the rich and stupid to showoff, chinkpads say you're a hipster.
Silly gaymerfag, winblowz makes you a micro$hit slave.
Jewgle will harvest your info.
gaymer kiddie
They sold it already.
Moron detected.

Only pretentious faggots or larpers act like this. I'm sorry that you work for a cock sucking boss and your soul is beyond repair but for most people, work life isn't like this. Kill yourself

Don't listen to this faggot. Installing Debian as a noob for productivity is a waste of time if your not studying CS or being a server admin.

100% of your time should be reading books, writing essays, uni web portals, and using Google for research. None of all that gay nerd shit will help you achieve better grades. Possibly leave time over for a social life and a girlfriend?

The most privacy you need is to hide your porn habits from Cortana, encrypt your drive from thieves, and operate within the Microsoft cloud to do your homework on your phone.

Linux is not more productive for office tasks than modern Windows. If your going that route anyways, use Linux Mint Debian. Unless your a pro, the real world doesn't give a shit about your nerd hobbies so long as you produce.

>Microsoft cloud
Depends on the university, mine uses Google for literally everything and actually recommends Google Docs over Microsoft Office.

LOL someone is a seething winfag.

I stared at your post for 5 minutes thinking the laptop skin was moving. You could say it was a moving experience.

10 ltsc or 7 on a t420?

used Thinkpad with an i5, 1080p screen, 8GB or more RAM, and an SSD
T450s or X1 Carbon for example

>X1 meme
At least where I live these fucks are overpriced to hell
Get an X270 or X280 if you want as recent as possible for cheap as shit
T560, maybe T470 could be found for 500 dollarydoos too, all great choices
Don't listen to the neckbeards talking about T420 and other ancient shit, it's almost 2020, that shit doesn't hold up and eats power like a fucking fridge

get a Fujitsu, they are the new thinkpads.
>awesome quality
>0 bloat preinstalled

Open box returns. They go at $300 off retail price

Yes.
I recommend either google docs or Microsoft cloud.

>Seething winfag
Hell yeah. How much do you spend per credit hour in 2020? Are you taking student loans? It's your life, but you should ask your dad what he brings to work in the real world office than buying into the freetard meme. Ask your school tech desk help what they recommend. While you can get by with a properly configured Linux, it is a Windows world where I do not recommend Linux as a desktop productivity replacement.

Honestly just go to a Best Buy and they'll say the same thing. Although I don't trust low end consumer pre-installed windowsretsil mschines as the OEMs sign shady deals to install bloat to subsidize the hardware. That can be wiped in 15 minutes with a USB restore disk.

10, always

Absolutely this. Do not fall for the gaming laptop meme.

You can get a decent used macbook from mac of all trades, and it comes with a warranty. Also, you don't have to be "rich" to own one new. Just save up, buy one and a reliable external storage device equal or larger than the mac internal storage for time machine backups. Schedule nighty backups before bed and plug in the external drive. When the mac starts to get a bit slow, or you need specific newer specs for a class, sell your macbook used. Usually you can get 70-80% of what you originally paid back, then apply that to the cost of a new one. Then unbox, turn it on, connect external drive, restore time machine backup, enjoy having everything exactly how you like it.

e.g. pay $1200 for macbook, 4-5 years later sell it for $800 or more, buy newest $1200 macbook, essentially for $400.

This is what mac owners do. It gives the illusion of wealth. You only pay the "Apple tax" one time, then each later model basically costs you the same as a shit Walmart special laptop.

you gonna quit after a semester anyway. Brainlets like you have no place in academics

>heavily multitask

like what?

>heavily multitask
>$500
buy a used modern thinkpad

Make sure you that in what ever you buy that you can upgrade the ram and storage.

I'm eyeing two Lenovo Legions right now, anyone I might need to know / be warned about? Especially about how convenient they are to carry around?

Unironically this. In fact right now I'm doing some tlc on my X230 to start college next month.

Thinkpad

17 inch one isn't any good to carry around, as any laptop would be
Keyboards at least used to be pretty shit quality, maybe they're better now
Hinges seem to be pretty good, so there's at least that
The sub is a nice addition, if you're into that

Samefag shit, enforced suicide asap.
snfkp

And what would you suggest in that price range

cringe

>Buy a Thinkpad X2xx series with decent specs for $200 or $300 refurbished by a pro.
Use the remainder of your budget to save for the prescription eyeglasses you will need in 6 months of using that piece of shit screen.
