well after being code monkey you usually get to be 'code monkey'-monkey. that means you dont do the code-monkeying yourself anymore, you write down the project plan in some form and then let other people do the code monkeying while you get the pleasure of constantly being under time and budget pressure because youre basically responsible for the project. added bonus for external projects: you get the benefit of dealing with customers!
