having a face in the thumbnail is generally beneficial, because we automatically look at faces. i guess making these absurd facial expressions makes it more effective.

Yeah but if they're ALL doing it then they just blend in...especially with how bland the average person looks.
At this point might as well just have a big bright red solid square as the thumb; would be so jarring and odd I think people would look at it just a 1/4th of a second longer.

Unconsciously, even though I know they're goofy as fuck, they'll have put the work in to at least have some form of basic to medium depth consumer information I can passively inbide instead of some dude mumbling on his desktop, or worse, a Pajeet trying to motivational speech me about installing Windows.
