Yes a heat sink and fan is a must if you don't want it to underclock, but haven't been able to find any benchmark to know it's exact relative performance.
Yeah it's more than decent for most things, definitely a good thing to keep around for either home server or for when you're just watching cat videos and don't want to desecrate your 16 core 32gb ram desktop in running such a measly task.

Has anyone tried to use one of these just straight USB3.0 to PCIe ?

I find these that are suppossed to plug in as a splitter, but I don't want to waste money if I can't hook it up directly via USB3.0.
I can't seem to find any info on anyone trying this with a rPi though. Is it just too stupid of an idea?

I set mine up yesterday with Raspbian FULL and it crashed three times. First time running the built in Minecraft for 10secs, then randomly after 3mins of Chromium (which is slow as fuck) and then while making a shit attempt at playing back a 4K remux in VLC. So I installed LibreELEC instead and that plays back 4K remuxs perfectly. 1080p h264 not so much. I think I'll go the retropie route once it supports the pi4 officially and start looking at traditional computers/laptops again.
