How well would older thinkpads handle linux and are there any specific distros you guys would recommend to use? I'm getting a t410 and I'm not sure what to install on it I'm shifting between trying debian or xubuntu but the last time I installed debian on a laptop the performance was very bad. Just wondering if anyone has experience trying out multiple distros on some of the older model thinkpads.

Dell Latitude E6430 checking in, i7-3740QM and NVS 5200M, wish I had a Thinkpad cause of possibility of upgrades and aesthetics. I had a second HDD in the CD tray on my laptop now, decent 900p screen on this model too.

Well it mostly depends on the de im h o, debian and devuan both work great with xfce and kali linux works okay with gnome on my t510

Did you just mash enter through the install? You can choose between multiple different distros on the debian install, including xfce which also comes with xubuntu.

Repasting the Elitebook 2570p
>Remove back cover
>Unscrew 4 heatsink screws
>Done

Repasting the 820 G2
>Disassemble the entire fucking laptop because the cooler is sandwiched between the motherboard and bottom assembly

I love the laptop otherwise, but fuck HP for this bullshit, and for the 2260 M.2 slot.

Sorry for the stupid question, but I recently bought a new battery to my T430 and I think Fedora 30 is showing the wrong battery capacity. How can I fix that? Would appreciate any kind of help.

That's surprisingly thicc when compared to everything else on the market right now. Still don't care about that usb-c charging though.

use tlp to calibrate it. Batteries generally also come with instructions to discharge them to a low % and then charge them back up.

Thank you very much for your help! Yeah, but this one was second-hand new. Basically the guy I bought the battery from had it lying around and sold it after quite some time.

Send wallpaper help

Tell me more about the wifi upgrade.
What improvements did you notice and what part did you buy?
For wallpaper I just use something simple that hides the dead pixels.

What should I do when my X230 gets delivered? Should I reinstall windows and format the SSD or just use the installation it comes with? Anythikng else that comes to mind?

is the t450s worse then the t440s? why isnt the t450 listed? its around the same price on eBay in burgerland

>ayymd
good goy

Do you know maybe how long does it take to recalibrate?

You have to discharge all the way to 0% without purposely running max power to “turbo drain” it. You just have to use it normally until it dies. Then you charge it all the way back up.

It’s however long discharging + full recharge takes on your battery.

Thank you very much once again, I know it's not much coming from an user on a fucking imageboard, but really appreciate it!

Install GNU/Linux

Keep in mind though you can’t just go and do it. You have to trigger the battery to reset first. It’s just a click of a button in the Lenovo software on Windows, not sure about Linux.

But you do have to tell it you’re doing a reset or else it does nothing.

Shucks, that might be a problem on linux.

I’m sure there’s something on thinkwiki to do it. I highly doubt lincucks users haven’t figured it out.

Found only some outdated methods, or I'm just retarded.

this /tpg/ lack cute thinkpads, let me post the cutest

If I take the 2GO version of x220 ram, to have it cheaper and add the ram, what is the least level specs that others? Just the ram or some other stuff?

Which model ?

It came with the Intel 7260N model and it was pretty lackluster but then again all my other devices are 5ghz AC capable. It might have been a very capable N adapter for all I know.
The signal was also pretty shit compared to my other devices. Speeds quickly dropped below 5mb/s. The lowest I've seen the AC adapter drop to is 10-12mb/s and I get over 30mb/s a lot of the time.
First I bought Intel 7260HMW and noticed it doesn't fit because I'm retarded and then I bought the 7260NGW. It ended up being cheaper too, £7.95 vs £13.50.
Mine wasn't a lenovo branded one so I had to flash v2.36 bios because it doesn't have a whitelist.
Overall its a dirt cheap upgrade for some real gainz. My next move is to fuck around with the antennas a bit and see what I can squeeze out of this thing.

t440s

about how much should one pay for a t420 with
>no drive
and
>any drive
Im thinking of buying one just to have a spare laptop and I have a spare 2.5" HDD lying around (I dont know the thickness though)

If I take the 2GO version of x220 ram, to have it cheaper and add the ram, what is the least level specs that others? Just the ram or some other stuff?

I bought a lenovo Thinkpad P53s. Is that a good model?

I got a t420 but it seems to have come without an expresscard slot. Is it possible to install one onto there?

It's a t590 with a different gpu I think

Thank you for the detailed reply.
Based on the speeds in your post, I don't think I would benefit from the upgrade: my ISP is the bottleneck.
But my mom, who lives in a city with better internet, would definitely notice the difference.
I'll order the 7260NG for her T440.

What thinkpads should I be looking at if I don't want to break my back carrying it? Or is the weight just the tradeoff for a laptop that doesn't break in one drop?

So I just scored a 2014 T450 on Craigslist for $250. It's a decent machine, and I really like it, except that the screen is 1366x768 and kinda sucks. I hear it's possible to swap it for an IPS 1920x1080. Where should I start? Have any of you done this, and, if so, what screen should I order?

anyone have a t440p with a i7-4910? how hot does that bitch one? I fell for the 4702mq meme. I regretably just found out that the 4910 is like 22% faster.

Found a 2nd hand t480s for about 1200 USD (converted). Here are the specs:
i7-8650U
24 Gb RAM
512 SSD
1080p screen

Should I take it? What are the things to check before I finalize the deal?

Well boys, I had a solid trade on my hand.

Absolutely mint condition Lenovo Thinkpad X230

RAM: 8GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz

Extra Storage 480GB HDD @ 7200RPM
Screen: HD 12.5"(inch) 1366x768 pixels

I/O: 2xUSB 3.0, Always on USB 2.0, VGA, Headphone Jack, Gigabyte Ethernet Port, 4 in 1 SD Card Reader, Mini Display Port with Audio, Express Card 54mm, Finger Print Reader, 720p Webcam
Comes with Lenovo AC Adapter

Said his fucking WIFE sold it while he was at fucking LOBLAWS.

I was so pumped boys to trade away my bulky flex 2 for something nice and portable and a e s t h e t i c. Why is life so cruel?

I'll have one tomorrow

Mine came N only but can't connect to 5ghz network, thinking of buying a 7260AC from ebay, just plug and play no bios modding required? I know about the different sizes and will get the correct one.

That's just a generic x230 you can get anywhere man

Why the fuck would Lenovo do that to confuse the customers, now I know why T440p is the only p series and the last user modification friendly one.

How much money is too much to spend when falling for this meme?

What OS to install on x220? Ill try almost anything

Gentoo. Or Arch if you want something quick to install.

i bought a soic8+CH341A usb programmer thingy from ali
does anyone know a good guide for flashing coreboot to x230?
no idea how to use this

How many euros maximum for x220 ?

Nice try user. I was hoping for something a little more brain dead to install

Just try debian/mint

try manjaro then

Any retards here?

Maybe y'all can help me figure out which model thinkpad I used to have, back around 2010-2012. It looked a lot like the model in the OP, just without a touch pad, finger print reader, or Wi-Fi. It was a much older model. It had some Intel cpu and integrated graphics, 256MB of ram, and about a 30GB hard drive. We ran XP on it but I'm pretty sure it had a sticker for vista (Idk how they expected vista to run when xp was a slideshow).
Any help would be much appreciated.

is there a nice flowchart for picking out a thinkpad?
if not that seems like a fun project for i/someone to take on

Attached: holy guide.jpg (614x457, 21K)

my schitzo nephew needs a computer. has to be pretty durable cause he is pretty clumsy for obvious reasons. thinking at the T440s.
was also thinking of giving him my t420 and keeping the T440s for myself if its not durable enough for him. unless one of the other models would be better off in this situation.

I have to almost completely replace the fucked up plastic shroud in my T430, except maybe for the panel shroud, I'll leave that for when I change panel itself. Has anyone here ever done something like it? Where do I find pieces for that kind of replacement?

Microsoft Windows 10 Enterprise

Any recommended place to get an X220? Do you all just comb ebay?

Sexy

Set him up with a desktop, webcam, and ubuntu
Leave him The C Programming Language, and wait for LoseThos2 to drop.

i have the option of buying a ThinkPad X20 in very good condition for a few euros on ebay. It seems like a nice thing to have for some comfy distraction-free programming in bed. But I'm kinda worried that the specs might be a bit too low for this day and age. I just don't know if 600 MHz Pentium III, 192 MB RAM and 30 GB HDD are enough to run a modern GNU/Linux distro and especially a web browser.
What do you think /tpg/? Would a modern distro (probably gentoo for the optimization) with something like openbox run such old hardware? and would it be usable?

You can probably put any linux with a slim setup on it. You WILL most definitely have trouble for modern-day websurfing, though. Every goddamn webpage these days comes with 24 different autoplay ads and fancy shit that hogs more RAM than was required to send Voyager-1 out of the solar system. Or make it a challange and work with text-base browsing..

The only webbrowsing I plan to do is programming references and shitposting on here. What worries me is that the Arch+Openbox setup on my main laptop uses 120 MB on idle.

Are the genuine Lenovo x220 9 cells worth the $150?

Bought a t430, what should I do to it first.

the extent of his computer ability it playing runescape. but it is funny how close their thought patterns are just gotta replace a few things and pretty much the same person.

install gentoo

Why the fuck does x230 have IPS but not T430? Killing me here.

does it actually work well?

install coreboot

Hipster street cred

Does a current TwinkPad inspire confidence in laypeople, or do they see it as poverty-tier because it's not consumer-marketed?

Every modern Linux distro is going to use at LEAST 80 MB of RAM on idle. There is no way around it. The only way to “fix” it is to install a really old distro. Code has grown, became more complex, it’s never going to be as small as it used to be back then.

>$150

I literally just bought a genuine one for $40.

ordered a 4th batch x210 51nb thinkpad a month ago. Barebones laptop, i7-8650 and 2880x1920 display.

Anyone have tips/experiences about the 51nb machines?

where from?
Lenovo site has them for $150 AUD

There are intel wifi adapters that are lenovo branded, they will come with an FRU number. That should work without removing the whitelist or downgrading the bios. For mine I had to downgrade to bios V2.36 as it does not have a whitelist.

This. got lucky a week ago and found a 68+ for my t440 for £35. 5 Cycle count and capacity is at like 99%.

Hay tpg, what's the oldest model Xseries I can get that supports a 1080p screen?

Welp I just successfully turned my T450 into a hackintosh.

Any suggestions for what apps I should get/settings to tweak, or otherwise experiment with in macOS? I’m curious if it has the potential to replace windows as my daily driver. I’m wondering if I should make the effort to switch to it for long-term usage but not really sure what advantages it actually has if any. So far I’m not really seeing anything groundbreakingly different from winblows.

Attached: t440p-macos.jpg.02d702200b83fa8f87f4d2462b0f6fdf.jpg (1280x1000, 127K)

Brah which guide did you use? I've managed this on my t440 and its comfy as fuck, the only thing that doesnt work however is the brightness keys. Do yours work? Volume/Mute works though for some reason.

Nope, I don’t care about the function keys really at all. I’m still figuring out how all that works in macOS though too.

I used this guy’s repo:
github.com/jsassu20/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T450-Mojave

It’s absurdly based, he literally gives you everything you need so it’s basically just install clover to USB stick + then copy/paste the github files over the default clover EFI folder.

Ah mine is slightly different. I followed a guide on tonymacx86 forum. Would have been easy too had I properly read the instructions from the get go but got there eventually.

Just use the repo I linked. Should work for T440’s too but you might have to modify the config.plist or something a bit

yes

Budget is no issue. Which Thinkpad to get? Want one with decent battery life, good screen, good keyboard, and Linux friendly since I intend to program with it

I locked my ssd with a t450 hdd bios password and forgot it. Data isn't worth anything but the ssd is. Right now it's basically bricked (doesn't show up inside my OS). What can i do?
