Your possibly treatable paranoia aside, the best you can do with the laptop is to find diagrams of the laptop and compare them to the motherboard and look for extra chips or other sorts of tampering.
You could also try removing the disc drive. And you should watch the network traffic the laptop produces. It might be sending stuff out of band though.
