Windows Updates

Evening everyone! How did the latest round of slowdowns er uh I mean updates fuck your computer up? For me Cortana kept resurrecting herself and maxing out my CPU and the Start menu was completely fucking bonkers. Rolled back and delayed that shit 35 days I didn't even keep them long enough to find out what else was improved. FTGE

Never hold of updates and never had an issue. Not even with 1809.

Use a real OS and then you won't have problems like this.

>using proprietary software
You brought this on yourself.

werks on my machine

I have around a dozen residential clients who performed the 1809 update on their own, none have any issues.

Recently I updated a Windows 8.1 on PC that hadn't been turned on for a few years. Windows Update worked a few hours, but the PC went to sleep eventually without installing any updates. I had to use a third party software that downloaded and installed the updates. After about an hour, the software would do everything fully automatically. Six hours later all updates were installed. Nice!

lololololol holy shit why does anyone use windows 10 out of their own volition? 8.1 is good for another 5 years dude. if you have 7, then 8.1 is the next logical step. if you have 8.1, just stick with it, and hope that MS starts giving a shit about their user base again when that hits EOL. if they don't, then just go full lunix or macfag.

My updates have been pretty uneventful so far. I just open up the Bash terminal, type
> sudo apt update; sudo apt upgrade;
and I get some simple security updates that keep my computer secure without breaking anything. There's no surveillance bullshit, no things that slow down my entire computer needlessly, nothing that makes me unable to get work done.
Oh, and did I mention that this process also updates my apps as well? Yeah, if I downloaded an app from the repository for my choice of linux distro, it will receive updates through the above process, rather than not updating until I need to open it. That way, it's always ready to go. Of course, if I don't want to update the app, I don't have to.

This post was brought to you by the Debian Linux gang.

I've been wary about upgrading and leaving Windows 7 since before we "knew" Windows 8 was bad.

When you're a kid, you constantly want to update and see what's new because you think things can only get better and better, but when you're an adult you know that things can get worse and as the old saying goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Not sure if I you understand me. Windows 8.1 is still 8.1 but with all the updates installed, or actually only the security updates. I used download.wsusoffline.net/ . It could be that the software can only do automatic restarts if UAC is disabled. Also, the first time after a restart, I had to allow the execution of a batch file (Do you want to run this file: yes, Always ask: No). Then WSUS installed updates, restarted, installed more updates etc.etc.

ohhh shit, i thought you "upgraded" to 10. my bad bro.

I blocked updates, cortana, and microsoft.com from using my internet so I never get updates.
No spectre slowdowns or pajeet updates for me m8.

>computer security
implying updates do anything else but patch one exploit and create another

Hmmm, my idle CPU usage is sitting right around 3% at idle, which does seem pretty high for a 4670k @ 4ghz but a small part of that is Bit Defender.

I went from 8.1 to 10, the UI was better. I had to use 10 at work and noticed pretty stable performance there, so i upgraded to 10 and did the whole delete everything from powershell thing.

It's been just fine.

Everything still works fine except for outlook which I don't have the time or energy to bother fixing. Also syncthing disappeared from my installed apps

Yeah, because it required you to have fucked up your registry in a very specific way.
Suffice it to say, only fuckwits who ran everything they could find with "disable windows 10 botnet" in the name had this problem - that is, most of Jow Forums.

go suck Stallman's smegma cock.

macOS it is!
