I am having a lot of anxiety about trying to get this cybersecurity job. It's a comfy remote job. I sent my resume, they gave me a binary to hack. That gave me a link to a server. The server was a CTF to get their email to arrange an interview. Interview went well, and I was given a mock company network/application as a black box to hack, break, fuzz and write a report on. I turned it in today.
It's the only place I've found that tries to weed people out by demonstrating practical ability. I think I did well but I'm still really anxious. Do you guys know of any other companies that won't care I have no certs, no job, and no degree as long as I can perform?
depends, are you a white male or a diversity token?
Angel Cooper
Thank you fren

Hallo.
I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you have a half way decent skill set for it and a willingness to continue learning, they won't care. I've worked for a few different companies and I'd say there's a good mix of those with no certs/degree and those who have every cert under the sun. I am one of those with no degree/certs.
Usually the technical demonstration companies ask for are the exact thing they are trying to get out of the candidate.

If it's a practical interview and you pass their tests, then it's a good sign. If you don't get it, then email them after. Thank them for their time and ask how you can improve.

No diversity points for me
Thank you fren. I wasn't able to identify the back end RPC server, even though I reverse engineered ~80% of how the requests were sent. Nothing recognized the server fingerprint nor the structure of the requests. I'm just really anxious because I couldn't break the encryption on their weird custom algorithm for bank account number (which I recommended against) and the CC number's were SHA-384. I couldn't get the RPC to give me all of it's treasure. I think I did good I the rest, though. I'm just really anxious because I haven't had a job since June, and I'm miserable, and this is the first one that appears to be working out in any way.

Sure kid. I'm the one who needs to cope. Security research is admirable field and you're undermining OP's accomplishment of a successful CTF and potentially a job opportunity. If you ever worked in a team or made something bigger than hello world: you would understand that.
Cooper Davis
Remember, fren. The fear of failure is always worse than failure itself.
Be proud in the work you do and continue learning, refining, and walking down the path of mastery.
Only your mother is capable of giving a shit about you if you don't give a shit about yourself. So when you do start giving a shit you'll be surprised how many of your peers will start giving a shit about you too.
Honestly, you probably made it further than a lot of other individuals. Either way, I say keep applying to other jobs anyways. It is much better to have too many options than not enough. Best of luck user!
Easton Walker
It's only a serious risk to those starting out. Once you start to develop skills that are in high demand that shit goes out the window.
But I completely agree. OP actually accomplished something with this interview process. I don't think this company will give a shit about that.

Woman here. I have been working as a software engineer for ten years now. I have worked on game engines, machine learning, data science, pretty much anything fun.
There’s a push because it honestly is a lot harder grtting into tech as a woman. There’s all these weird hoops like I have to be “one of the guys” to fit in and any sign of femininity is taken as a weakness. For example, most women who have worked in nonfrontend programming I’ve seen over the years avoid makeup or use minimal. They also speek like an octave deeper around teammates than around me. Most women just weren’t encouraged like a lot of men are to get into tech when they do show an interest. I know like some men I had to fight tooth and nail to get where I am today—there’s a disparity here with how accessible tech is made to men vs women. Heck, even on IRC most of the women I know on freenode and the like go to great lengths to conceal the fact that they’re women because people will automatically treat them with less respect.
I have a trans woman friend who confirmed what she experienced as a male in tech and what she experiences passing as a woman in tech. Its very interesting how insecure or jusf plain shitty men get about women doing intellectual things, almost as if it threatens some of them.
All in all I’ve worked with mostly pleasant people but its stupid to pretend this reality doesnt exist and that women have less opportunity to succeed in tech than men om average.
Like my male friend who I just taught to code just got a high paying job which took me years ro get to that point when i was on my own.
Yes there are womens reachout orgs that help women get into tech, but the reason they exist is because texh is currently an extremely masculine space. I know that sounds absurd but if uve ever worked with a mostly female team vs a mostly male team ull notice differences. I wish tech to be more accessible and pleasant for all.

Yet at the same time you get easy hires do to diversity qouta thus evening out the field in the end.
Noah Rivera
I wish you and OP all the best. Thanks for sharing your story.
I guess my point I failed to convey was: that it makes no sense for a company to take an underqualified person, so its insulting to imply that you are getting something you don't deserve because muh black or much vagina.
I think what is in place to engage young women and POC is a good start to making more qualified programmers. If everyone can program we can truly HACKTHEPLANET. And I think its ridiculous that the spergs on this board complain about no job or no gf and it's never their fault.

How did your friend get the job? Did he know anybody at the company?
OP here, I fell for the learn to code meme, and spent over a year trying to get an entry-level front end dev job (or any programming job, really), I even moved out of my comfy small town to a new state with more jobs. The worst was seeing a job posting in a large city, with lots of tech around, advertise a job that required knowledge of MERN stack, plus Python for additional back-end servers, entry level, that paid $12.50/hr because "the experience you'll gain is SOOOOO valuable". The job site said after I'd applied that approximately 75 prime had already applied to it, and the posting had been up for 4 days. Breaking in to programming is hard without actual experience. The market has a demand for experienced devs, juniors trying to break in are fucking saturated.
I started looking at cybersecurity shit because of it and because I like doing that more, and found this job, and now here I am.

>Do you guys know of any other companies that won't care I have no certs, no job, and no degree as long as I can perform? most of them do, when you have relevant experience
Henry Peterson
Security is a good gig to get into in IT since there are no deliverables and therefore no expectations beyond you providing (very occasional) reports and helping with audit/compliance shit, if you're even involved with that. And most of that shit is orchestrated by an SIEM you'll pay annual maintenance on. Otherwise you get to play on the computer all day and then attend BlackHat annually even though you likely have zero business being there. I think I'm bitter because every security person I've ever worked with has been worthless and lazy.
Hunter Martinez
I have no relevant work experience, just s lot of shit fucking around, popping vulnhub boxes and a pair of hackernoon articles
