If you don't want family going through it just a basic cipher will do, and takes very little time to learn to write in.

well, what level of security are you looking for?

if you just don't want some random fucker to see your shit if the file leaks somehow (eg, you were dumb enough to put it on some cloud drive service or you loaned the machine to a buddy and he stumbles across the file), and aren't trying to evade some governmental TLA, a txt+7z password should be fine
use a suitably high-entropy password or else anyone with a couple thousand bucks worth of GPUs can crack your shit

if you're more concerned about over the shoulder viewing and are expected to write in a public location, you'll want a cipher you can memorize
do some kind of letter swap cipher and/or write in a foreign language

if you're writing in a physical book, a simple alternative alphabet cipher could work (weird symbols instead of a, b, c, etc), and you could add a few weird features for the fuck of it (like how korean is written with a straightforward alphabet, but letters are stacked into block groups)
would still be easy to crack if the book was discovered by an actually determined adversary, but high security likely isn't that paramount if you're fucking writing the thing in public
