College website

My university provides all students with a personal address on their Unix web server.

What can I do with this?

Personal porn server

not very clever are you? Ever considered a career as a burger flipper?

Pretty much every university does that. You can't do anything with it other than host content, as intended.

what is your major?

you can host a portfolio with interesting stuff and get a good job user

DNS spoofing and sell the data

CS.

Yeah, that's what I want to do, but I only have basic experience with HTML and I don't wanna make something that looks like it's from 1997.

Then learn better HTML

Use Brackets or MS Expression Web

>hey gee I'm a fucking CS student but a basic markup language is too difficult for me
>how can I get all the benefits of using this simple tool without actually needing to learn it?
Drop out

He never said it was difficult

if a cs student can't churn out a website with a decent looking portfolio then they're retarded

I'm guessing you're a CS student who's only skill is web design, a.k.a, you're a retard.

no. i'm guessing your brain is too small to comprehend basic markup and css.

Express yourself with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Build a portfolio. Etc.

You probably can't do anything with PHP or SQL, and if you can, you probably shouldn't try. You could get in trouble for it.

Basic experience with HTML is all the HTML you need to make a nice-looking website. Mostly because almost everything that has to do with making a page nice-looking is CSS, not HTML. Learn CSS

Not him, but has it occurred to you that before you can have the privilege of knowing things, you have to actually learn them?

That screenshot is from your uni?
Apache 2.2 is fucking ancient, go nuts.

selling data of 10 users is really profitable and it has a lot of demand btw

Here is a small tip for you: just make a website that looks like it's from 1997. When we look at your website we should think that you are too smart to spend time making your website pretty.

you are aware that basic HTML and CSS is enough to make a simple portfolio. literally takes an hour to get the basics and another hour or two to make the site.

Sure, but you are aware that before you can have the privilege of knowing basic HTML and CSS, you have to learn them?

OP just said his university provides all students with web space. He never said what year he was in. Ergo, there's no reason to assume he has any experience with or preexisting knowledge about anything whatsoever. And, thus, no reason to denigrate him for failing to meet any such unfounded expectation.

which is why i said it takes an hour to understand the basics.

You also said:
>if a cs student can't churn out a website with a decent looking portfolio then they're retarded
Implying first of all that OP is a CS student, which they never even said.

Secondly implying that a CS student should know these things already, which doesn't follow if you consider we don't know what year OP is in.

But it seems you actually meant he should be able to learn them, not that he should already know them. Which you didn't make clear at all.

That being the case, we have no reason to assume he even knew what he would have to learn. That is, sure, HTML and CSS are easy to learn, but we can't assume he knew that to make a webpage, he would have to learn HTML and CSS.

Even if he did know that, we also can't assume it means anything about him as a person that he'd sooner ask 4channel for help than search the Internet for HTML or CSS tutorials or references. After all, it's really the same thing, since 4channel is a part of the Internet.

nigger, he just said he was a CS student. i didn't say a CS student should already know it, i said if a CS student can't do it, they're retarded. now that he knows what he needs to learn, there's nothing more to discuss. if he can do it, great. if he can't, he's retarded. why is this so hard for your small brain to comprehend?

>i didn't say a CS student should already know it, i said if a CS student can't do it, they're retarded.
I already addressed this.
To which you've responded:
>now that he knows what he needs to learn, there's nothing more to discuss. if he can do it, great. if he can't, he's retarded. why is this so hard for your small brain to comprehend?
You implied ( ) he was retarded for not being able to do it before we even had any reason to assume he couldn't do it, since, as you've conceded, he might not have even known what it was he needed to learn, let alone made any effort yet to learn it.

>starts spamming reddit memes because he's clearly losing the argument

isn't me. I said IF they can't churn one out then they're retarded, notice the if you stupid nigger.

ok samefag. sending one image isn't spam.

Yeah but you said if they can't churn one out then they're retarded as a counterargument to a post that said he never said it was difficult, which entails A) you either didn't acknowledge or didn't believe OP didn't think it was difficult, and B) used this non-acknowledgement or disbelief as grounds to implicitly affirm your antecedent.

how about neither? I wasn't arguing whether or not HTML was difficult, I was arguing that if a computer science student isn't able to utilize basic HTML and CSS for a simple portfolio page, that makes them retarded.

If that was genuinely all you meant by it, then explain what place the argument had in context. You made this argument as a counterargument to the argument that OP never said HTML or CSS was difficult for him. If my explanation isn't what you actually intended to express, then what you said makes no sense.

what the fuck are you talking about? my point was that a CS student is retarded if they're unable to comprehend something that is as basic as HTML / CSS.

Yes, and that point was a counterargument to the claim that OP never said HTML and CSS were difficult.

The only way it makes sense as a counterargument in context is if you were implicitly refusing to believe HTML and CSS were not difficult for OP.

no, because I just told you I wasn't arguing over the difficulty of HTML / CSS. I'm assuming that if he can't understand and use HTML / CSS, then yes, he's retarded, but I'm not assuming he's retarded if he doesn't know anything basic web dev.

>I'm assuming that if he can't understand and use HTML / CSS, then yes, he's retarded,
You were also assuming he can't understand and use HTML / CSS. That is, yes, you were assuming your conditional, but despite what you're telling me, you were also assuming your antecedent. That's the only way what you said makes sense as a response to what you were replying to.

no, because I never said he was retarded.

i'm also assuming that isn't OP.

When you said that if he can't understand HTML and CSS, then he's retarded, you were replying to a post that said he never said he couldn't understand HTML and CSS.

I understand the concept that in the GENERAL case, just because you say IF x, THEN y, doesn't mean you're saying x AND y, but in this SPECIFIC case, it DOES mean that, because of the nature of the post you were replying to.

no, it doesn't. I was simply stating that a CS student is a retard if they can't understand HTML / CSS. It's stating that if said user can't use HTML / CSS, they're retarded BECAUSE it's not difficult.

Nice try, people around here don't reply to people to agree with them.

make a webpage, retard

PHP shell.

ok retard

Hi guys, OP here.

lol idk what happened but everyone started fighting.

Yes I'm a CS major, only a sophomore tho. We don't really take that many web dev classes here. Yes I've done a mini portfolio on this web server provided by the school, but like I told the other guy, I don't want it to look like something out of 1997. I understand HTML very well, CSS not that much but I'm learning it by myself. I'm also looking to get into a WYSIWYG editor like Brackets, like someone else mentioned.

My original post was actually about "what else" I can do with this school-provided Unix homepage, not "how do I HTML"

Attached: 1515631414074.jpg (479x320, 20K)

share course material with other students
host a static website with perhaps some js

Put openvpn on it and sell VPN clients. Bonus points for buying sponser spots with YouTubers

DuckDuckGo "Jekyll" it is a static site generator. There are tons of free templates. Download one and modify it. It will fart out some html and assets that you can put on server. It will look good.

Thanks, I'll take a look at this.

Use it as a fileserver, make sure to make .htaccess files.

Also stop drinking the blood of new born children.

Just because it's a static site doesn't mean you can't host dynamic content using cron jobs. I once wrote a program that would effectively host an imageboard from my college's static web hosting.

Use JavaScript to send submissions to an email account through some form-to-email API. I used formsapi.jabwn.com.

Then, all the script has to do it fetch new posts via POP3, add them to the pages from the real file hierarchies, and republish.

OP is a dumbass and can't even learn HTML markup

host lewd nazi loli cartoons

Fucking wall of text, fuck off homo nigger, stop defending CS smoothbrains.

t. dumdum

>I don't want it to look like something out of 1997
Then don't, this isn't rocket science.

I hosted doujins, furry porn, guro and a simple imageboard on mine.
Just put random shit on it, kids will think you are cool

back when I was in college (08-12) I used my webspace to host manga and shit. I even wrote a little program that would import a folder full of images and export web pages with links to each one, so I could read manga on my zune HD over the schools wifi. Now this kind of thing is outdated and you can just read manga directly from your smartphone

your best bet is using it to host files to send to your friends

gay furry porn comic hosting

huh?
