What’s the deal with Gen Z and Snapchat? I am 24 and the only “social websites” I use are Youtube, Facebook and Jow Forums. I downloaded the Snapchat app once and was struck by how goofy and bizarre the interface was. What’s the point of Snapchat, what do people use it for?

I've seen younger millennials use it just as much as gen z desu

they unironically believe things disappear after 24 hours

I think it's just a program where you take a picture and share it to your friends for fun.

It is without a doubt the most horrible thing I have ever used from a UX standpoint.

I understand discussing the function of the app and even the way people use it, but if you unironically came here to start a thread about ASKING what it does in the first place then you need to fucking kill yourself.

And just in case this isn't bait, they send pics to each other that disappear to the user after a set amount of time ranging from 1-10 seconds. Of course these pictures are most likely saved on the servers but that's beside the supposed "function" of the apps.

Imagine how much child porn they must sell to rich people

Snapchat is basically designed around sending things you want deleted quickly. For texting as soon as you view a message it gets deleted once you lock your phone or turn off the app unless you tell the app not to do that or to save the message.
This is also true for pictures, every time you screenshot a text, photo, or save it in the app it gives the sender some sort of indication that you did. This makes it pretty easy to tell when someone is talking about you or if someone is keeping a photo you sent.
Its a pretty nice app for what it does, as long as you avoid the social media stuff, which is all isolated to one screen.

Good fucking point. I know for sure I sent my cock over those tubes when I was underaged.

wasn't snapchat pretty much dead these days?

Is there a Snapchat News with all the juicy gen z/millenials starlets?

It's just an app underage girls use to send their nudes to men in their 30s they call daddy

18 yo zoomer here. I think it's placebo for people to believe their nude photos are safe. the app is honestly horrible but I would still rather use it than feed zuckerbergs botnet on instagram

pretty much

what do people at your high school think of Facebook? Not hip enough?

Yep not hip as it was back in 2010

In elementary school did you and your class mates even use Facebook?

>I would still rather use it than feed zuckerbergs botnet on instagram
are you really >implying that snapchat is any better than facebook? it's all the same shit

>instagram

don't listen to him. he's a dumb zoomer.
he embraces the botnet, but pretends to be against it.
probably has all his info up online.

its for short attention spans. yes even shorter than yours.

facebook to get what, connected with all of my family members and people in high that I don't really like?

LIke most of the naive gen z, a bunch of larpers

clean your room doomer

they’re literally kids you nerd

Y'all are fucking retarded. Sure originally it started as a nude swap app or whatever, but nowadays it's pretty much there to replace texting. Texting is now for important info you need to convey to another person, snapchat is for normal convo.

Also it's easier to ask chicks for their snapchat instead of their number, which helps for talking to girls. Plus when they post to their stories (Video or images anyone can see for 24 hours by clicking on your name) it gives you an in to make a comment about what they posted, and start a convo.

You also can get location stories, where a location itself has a collection of peoples videos/images they can post to (Sorta like a BBS "Wall" type thing), so for example I attend college, if I go onto snapchat i'll see a location story called the name of my dorm, then on it people posts random shit from inside the dorm building. This can be stupid shit like water condoms being thrown, peoples shitty rapping, people selling THC carts, or more interestingly, people posting their usernames. From that I can add them, and spark up a convo, it's a great way to meet girls.

Basically it's the only useful social media app Gen Z uses. It actually helps to get us talking to each other, unlike insta or facebook or etc, where it's just windows into the good part of someones life.

Sadly they def keep all are data and sell it off to third parties, but i've given up caring, and prefer social interaction over spergism about privacy.

holely shit i’m glad i was born earlier

far from it sadly

snapchat is literally made by a bunch of startup retards who can't even make money or actually put relevant ads from all of the data they could be collecting. zuck shoves literally every single piece of data through tons of botnet algorithms and sells it to shady corporations to get way too targeted ads

>using facebook
wtf why

>Youtube, Facebo-
Facebook is inarguably worse than Snapchat, Instagram and all the other normie gen z apps.

You are literally just as bad as the gen z brainlets, silence op

Its another proprietary shitstorm. Its better to use Signal to replace texting (and whatsapp, snapchat etc), and other programs for similar features and sharing.

Check out the Privacy General thread (don't have a link at at the moment) and the Fediverse thread ( ) for better social media that isn't just the appearance of security etc.

I grant this is actually helpful. My objections above stand, but This is helpful to know what the usage is beyond simply being group texts. For those of us who don't use it , what is a "story" exactly? In the past I was to understand it was basically "instagram mode within Snapchat" but maybe this is inaccurate? A story is essentially public for a period of time and does not require an invitation etc?

The "location" stories sounds neat in a way and I'm honestly unsure if open source alternatives have something comparable or not as Iv'e not looked into it yet. How do they determine location? Do you pick what location story you want to start or do you have to BE in X location to either start a story or post a follow up to it? Like, if you're across campus or home for the weekend, can you still post something to your dorm's story? Or only when you're close to it?

>uses Facebook
>rags on Snapchat for being goofy
Fuck off, boomer faggot.

>In the past I was to understand it was basically "instagram mode within Snapchat"

Instagram blatantly ripped off the feature the same way facebook ripped off myspace's features, followed by myspace ripping off facebook's chat system

Every social media app, even youtube, is now pushing this story garbage. But it started in large on snapchat.

What is special about a "story" compared to other sorts of messages? Is it just a public blog style post ? Why have so many seemingly become interested in the format?

its displayed to everyone on your friends list as a rolling chronology of posts to your 'story' that fall off after 24 hours. i think. i haven't used it since 2014

snapchat was neat at first but it just got turned into a machine to get you to check your phone every 30 seconds because people just send you pics of nothing with text on it that says nothing. i used it in college but it really just facilitated terrible interactions

Pretty much this
t. Zoomer
It's confusing as fuck, the only reason "you" would learn how to use its abomination of an interface is to stop all your "friends" bitching at you about it.

>uses facebook
>complaining about other social media
looool

A story is basically a short video displayed on your profile/in the list of all your friend's stories that anyone can view and replay as much as they want within something like 24 hours, after which it goes away. Good for general public things/happenings in your life you want share as anyone on your friends list can view it, like a post on traditional social media, except in video form with annoying "stickers" and emoji-filled captions on them.

yes. nobody really using it anymore with friends. only for hookups.

>I am 24
Almost 24 year old here, quit trying to act like an incompetent boomer. Snapchat used to be way easier to use. There were only three screens that were: your contacts, the camera and people's stories. It was like a Jow Forums (pre-archive era) for normies. You share a photo and when the timer runs out, you can't see it ever again.

>Snapchat
Is that what that is?
I've been seeing posters of it everywhere and I thought it was the new Nike symbol because the only one with any writing on it was an ad for Nike shoes.

>implying you can't take a picture of the screen with another device
lul gen z

get better friends

I wondered the same thing, so I talked to some normies 'insiders'.
It's all just for nudes, user. At least for males. Females enjoy filters and shit, but it doesn't matter. What matters is that they want attention, and there is no easier way to get attention and sexual stimulation than sending your nudes to males. I asked about what features make Snapchat good in any way and every man I know at some point admitted that they are here just because their female friends will send them nudes there. And they have modified clients of course to save pics, but outside of that there is nothing good, useful or interesting about this app.

the analog loophole strikes again

This and tinder kinda killed hookups for me. Fuck, it was easier to get laid before

>he uses facebook
>he has the balls to call anyone else a normie

lollololololololol

You really aren't one to throw stones if you use facebook.

Is there a more normalfag app than snapchat

>24
>don't use snapchat
t. virgin

Facebook. Even grandparents use that thing.

>he uses proprietary malware due to peer pressure

Started classes again earlier this week
Professor asked the class of 40 who uses Facebook
Only 2-4 people raised their hands, and most said they use Snapchat or just text other people
Get with the times nigger even normies stopped using Facebook

Not who you are responding to, but if you need to use bullshit programs like that at age 24 today, I'm really, really glad I was born when I was.

Facebook is used in semi professional way, it also allows for contact with some customer service, read news, local trade, etc. It has some utility.
However Snapchat is pure normalfag cancer.

You asked if there was a more normalfag app. Facebook it the ultimate normalfag app. You didn't say to exclude apps that can be used in a professional manner.

>t.
If this fucking stupid nonsensical meme that no kid actually knows what the fuck means doesn't die soon, I swear to fuck, Dumbest Generation.
>HURR LOOK IT UP
You can't search a fucking letter without getting tons of normal meanings and periods are ignored, you Dumbest Generational.
>HURR HE DOESNT KNOW WHAT IT MEANS BUT I WONT TELL HIM
So you don't know either, which means you should stop using this garbage.
This generation of kids was a mistake.

I'm not the user who asked though.
I think it's not about how many normies can use it, but how much of an app is normalfag shit. Facebook is like 80% normies being normies and rest is private companies, HR, PR, groups about trading or hobbies. Snapchat is 100% normies being normies with no utility whatsoever. But yeah, I get your point too.

I fucking hate facebook, how can people use that site unironnically, even if all the botnet factors were ignored, the site algorithm and design are absolute shit.

google.com/search?q=t meme

yes, but Jow Forums is only just catching wind of it. You think Jow Forums is the antithesis of the normie but Jow Forums is just as in touch with the world as the grannies and soccer moms whose only window into society's ongoings is the local news

How so? Thought these apps made it easier to find sluts down to fuck

>lul
How ironic, you underage fag.
