The attack on the USS Liberty was deliberate, there is audio communications between pilots and command proving it. Pilots identified the vessel as American, asked for confirmation twice before commencing attack. Command told them to proceed. This wasn't just one fluke bomb or missile. It was a prolonged two hour campaign that included attack by jets, fucking torpedoes, and then finally they sent a helicopter to strafe survivors int he water to try and kill all the potential witnesses.

Reminder Israel committed a war crime in Egypt. They preemptively attacked Egyptian forces(in Egypt) and buried them in mass graves to cover it up. The USS Liberty was monitoring their communications during this attack. Israel couldn't let this leak out, so they decided to destroy the vessel, kill the crew, and attempted to frame it as if Egyptian forces had attacked the Liberty instead.
