Vintage Computer General

How many vintage computers do you own. I collect windows 95, 98 era laptops. Desktops are too fucking big. I own about 6 now. Just got my hands on this Toshiba 100cs.

I collect old Macs. They're comfy.

>Compaq Contura 410C
>IBM Thinkpad 380ED
>Toshiba Satellite 4010CDT
>Pentium 1 desktop
>Pentium 3 desktop

I have some others from early 2000s, but I wouldn't consider them retro.

>I collect windows 95, 98 era laptops
I'd be doing the same thing with all of the above + XP. I just wish I knew how to get into the hobby. I'm pretty good with computers, but not so good with repairing them. If I knew how to get started with it, I'd be seriously interested. Those old laptops make me very nostalgic.

>not so good with repairing them
Go to a thrift store and find some old A+ cert books.

This compaq LTE is a beauty and interesting idea to merge notebook and desktop.

at 600+$, it is too much overpriced, though

Many of them will work fine. Biggest issue I ever run into is the hard drive and ram were taken out before they are donated. That and the power brick is missing or the battery doesn't work anymore. I wouldn't buy one without the power brick desu.

Thanks lads, maybe I'll try my hand at it soon.
>the hard drive and ram were taken out before they are donated
I think I can handle that.
>I wouldn't buy one without the power brick desu.
Why do you say that? Wouldn't that be fairly easy to replace, or do you have to worry about counterfeit stuff that will burst into flames?

Some of the early lappies have weird power supply configurations. If it takes a barrel tip and doesn't use weird voltages then you're probably OK. Some, like my Toshiba 410CDT, don't even have external power supplies and just use a figure 8 cord.

Cool and good info. Might stop by my local goodwill or similar this weekend.

Right now Im working on making my c64 run a bash terminal by hooking kt up to a pi 4

I just don't want to bother. If I'm going to put down $20 for a second hand laptop, I at least want the supply with it. I've also run into some unique machines with oddly expensive to replace supplies.

~11 95-XP computers, and 4-5 laptops that are 95-98

Plus, if it comes with the supply, you can usually see if it powers on and posts right in the store.

Is there a C64 cartridge that can turn it into a keyboard for another system? Like having a PS2 port on the cart, run cable to another system and a key combination on the C64 switches the keyboard between the onboard and external input? I've been looking but haven't found anything or even what to search for.

I own an unhealthy amount of Windows 98 era - XP laptops. Somewhere in the ballpark of 50. The Latitude C6xx, and C8xx series are some of my favorite machines to have ever been spawned. The trackpoints, and trackpads on those things rivaled, or even surpassed their Thinkpad counterparts, and the keyboards? Don't even get me started.

Never heard of anything like that, would be cool if somebody could do it though.
>50
Nice, I salute you.

Laptops
>ThinkPad 755CSE (1995)
>Dell Latitude C610 (PIII 1.2GHz) (~2002-2003)
>HP Pavilion ZX5000 (P4 3.06GHz) (~2004)
Desktops
>Compaq Presario 4505 (Pentium MMX) (~1997-2000)
>IBM Aptiva 2162 (Pentium MMX 233MHz) (~1998)
>Gateway something (P4 HT 2.6GHz) (2003)
>2 HP Pavilions from early 2000s, one with P4 2.8GHz and one with AMD Athlon XP
Also have a few late 90s video cards, sound cards, network cards, and other shit that someone gave me for free.

Forgot to say the ThinkPad 755CSE has a 486DX I believe. And the screen is sadly fucked up and I can't even find a replacement one

Somewhere inside, the FRU (Field Replacement Unit) is written. Use the code to look for a replacement.

Make sure to replace the internal RTC batteries below the keyboard. Once they leak it's over.

That will really fix all the discoloration and shit? Pic related
I took apart the screen once before and took some pictures of it, I hope I got the FRU in one of those.

>have 386 notebook, it was one of the first with a color TN lcd screen
>capacitors inside display panel leaked and fucked it up
>display is a standard one made by sharp and used in various industrial equipment, but replacement ones cost hundreds now
What a shame.

I've repaired motherboard with battery damage before and rerouted traces with wires. Those old boards are fairly tolerant of such thing

And I thought I was hoarding with my measly ~25. Good work.

I believe so. You wont lose anything trying. Of course, the backlight must be working, otherwise it will need be replaced too.
Consider looking information on LED strip mods for the backlight.
You old panels are a weak point. So are the keyboards. I suggest some kind of coating on the keys to make them last longer.
Another thing: you should have focus. Decide on a narrow range (perhaps a brand, color, weirdness or whatever) to avoid attempting to buy "everything."
Remember you may get damaged ones for parts, to assemble a fully working unit.
Learn how to recell batteries.

Mine was killed by it. By the way, the boards inside these old Toshibas are really complex and full with SMD components, there are separate boards for pretty much every device like GPU and sound card, and ALL the screws are different sizes.

And the service manual sucks, if you can find it.

dem stats

>Learn how to recell batteries
The battery is completely dead in the unit, so it would be cool if I could get it to hold a charge again. It's a NiMH battery. Since it's completely dead, I tried taking it out of the laptop before, but it is cemented in there. It must have leaked or something; the pull tab is a bit stained with orange/yellow shit.

i want to nakadashi raphi

Do you have an Agat?

A what?

I think he means this?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agat_(computer)

Forgot about that thing. I wish I had one but I've never been to the eastern bloc.

I imagine they are expensive too, if they are rare enough.

I probably have 150 or so machines (mostly laptops but probably 50-60 desktops/workstations/servers) in various places, I'll probably take a proper inventory of them if I ever get my database set up.

Eventually I'd like to benchmark/analyze them all and then eventually give away most of them or set up some kind of public hackerspace.

>I wouldn't buy one without the power brick desu.
Why though? You can buy those pretty much anywhere.

How do you deal with old batteries? Did that have a crusty NiCd in it? Was it corroded?

Yes it was like a blue rock. Still worked though.

Was it broken open or just covered with KOH?

I have an old laptop and am afraid to open it cuz cadmium is nasty stuff that gives you kidney failure slowly or something.

It leaked out.

My workspace is starting to get a bit cluttered.

For 6 years we had /retro/ threads
Then they got shitposted to death by butthurt zoomers and now we have this low quality shit

I miss them desu. They weren't even cancerous generals but containment threads.

Zoomers, trolls, gnu-fags, self-righteous millennials, and just plains guys from california.

Yes, we need more quality /retro/ threads.

I had one of these I crammed a 8gb IDE drive and OS 8.1 into. Gave it to my cousin, but he might have to send it back to me because of space issues. Got a new owner lined up if he does who is super excited.

I have a small hoard
it slightly worries me since I don't have the technical skill or financial reserves to repair them if they die. I feel slightly guilty taking them into my possession since if they die, they're probably dead forever.

You don't need to be an expert to do some of the basics.
Start by cleaning them with IPA and isolating the batteries.
After all these years of collecting and repairing I've still spent less than I spent on my current laptop (Toughbook CF-52 btw)

There's board that you can plug the C64 keyboard in directly and gives PS/2 and USB outputs.
But that's probably not what you're looking for,

What speakers are those? They look nice.

such a great game

I upgraded from a 9900K to a 3800X, It's sooooo much faster.

What is this? Looks pretty neat to be honest.

huh??

Is Pentium III 650MHz / Celeron 900MHz PC vintage?

JS-300
They are decent enough and fit with the era. Specially nice for native Amiga sound since they have built in togglable crossfade.

my first laptop was a Presario 1200 in 1999 for $1800

Man, I still have one of these.

Sorry, forgot to post "Pic unrelated".
The device in question was a fan project to make an Apple ][ "smart" phone.

ivanepling.com/portfolio-item/misc-apple-iie-phone/

does it still work? mine had some hardware failure years later, and eventually i lost the power cord somehow so it sat in my basement for about 10 years before i finally decided it was time to let go

I really appreciate people who take the time to edit out all of their pauses, umms and aahs and other mistakes from their videos like this guy and this guy does it too
youtube.com/user/TechIngredients/videos

It's cosmetically in a bad condition, but it does work. IIRC I used it as a serial terminal for some shit temporary a few years ago, sits in a box now.

Have old IBM PC Server 325 pentium pro 180 that I actively use as server, maxed ram at 1gb, 120gb ssd, 1tb 2.5hdd, usb 2.0, gigabit ethernet. Will also put some decent gpu via pci to pci-e raiser.
I'm really concerned bout psu blowing up tho, it's now 23 years old and those caps are getting very old.
