Is it possible to get a dev job without a degree that's NOT webshit or mobile shit?
In short: no
In that case I'm fucked.
what if one your personal project became widely used ?
>a Jow Forums reply saying no killed my career
You weren't going to make it with that lack of motivation anyway, so who cares?
If you want it, you'll get it. Simple as that.
People can spot passion and actual talent a mile away, regardless of degree or education.
If you know your shit, come across well and have real-world projects to show for it, you're above 99% of other people.
Like cowsay lol?
How widely used it is doesn't matter. What matters is that it shows skill.
then just get a degree? Like holy fuck man just apply literally ANYWHERE and either get a job in the industry or practice and make ACTUAL stuff on your own.
Unis aren't hard and differ in quality a lot.
If you all want is to have some sort of degree then just pick any institution and go get, just don't always expect great quality. If you find yourself having a lot of free time regarding your school duties, then do some extra work for practice and don't be a retard like I was and just spend all that time playing video games. I now hate myself every day because of it
Talent and motivation are meaningless if you can't sit your ass down and solve problems. And there's no guarantee you can do that without a degree. You can be really good, but reality is you're not entitled to an interview.
It's probably for companies who want to find devs they can lowball because people without CS degrees might underestimate their worth
i don't even have college level education and i have been employed in dev since 16
now i'm senior.
just move to a country where education is actually free
>free
with your taxes
Good luck getting a job in an oversaturated market. Another "edgy" newsletter...
Getting an interview is the hard part regardless of education, you need to pass HR/Recruiters with a good CV and a website/portfolio/github that are all proof you know your shit.
They don't care if you have a degree or not, plenty of people with degrees can't get a job because their CV is shit and their GitHub is just empty.
Interviews are not "xD solve hard leetcode problem 67 please."
All of my interviews I've ever done have been real-world problems, like "refactor X" or "recreate Y".
Especially junior/entry-level jobs, they're more like "So, why do you enjoy programming?" mixed with typical questions relating to the position like "Why would I use X instead of Y?"
It's not even hard, most people just don't have what it takes to make it. Being a negative person in general means you will not make it.
Most CVs are so fucking bad. Seriously like
>project 1
>a project made using
>it does something
>i made it very good.
>job experience
>I worked at McDonalds.
Like wtf is this? this is most CVs.
which is still miles better than taking a loan out and living in your car while you try to get a job
just move back afterwards if your brain is that much rotten that such a thing bothers you
So explain to me how the fuck I'm supposed to be a developer without knowing how to code a BLOODY FUCKING THING?
Noc sok
imagine being so mediocre and arrogant at the same time? who would pay $99 to advertise on your nobody website? do you think that a momentum for a couple of days on HN and PH will make you think this website can go anywhere? such low IQ arrogance
gee I don't know, have you tried studying?
College won't teach you how to be a developer, let alone a good one
why not make a personal project that makes you money, you fuckin' idiot. and stop being a wagie
Why is it called "No CS OK"? Is no computer science OK for a programming job?
HAHA GET FUCKED LOANKEKS
LOANKEKS*
user, did you mean to write LOANKEKS?
Could always move back after you got your degree if you decide this doesn't work out for you. It's dumb to not go for it because of taxes that largely aren't paid by you. And a degree you didn't pay for is often better since you're not a customer to the university who then has an interest to give you a degree.
committing to the linux kernel is still one the easiest ways to land a job in low level programming, degree or not.
OP is a low IQ """entrepreneur""", he's """made""" a couple of shitty websites that any CS student would make in a couple of days and paid indians on freelance websites to upvote him on ProductHunt and HackerNews in order to create fake hype around his shitty low IQ projects and make money off them
programming and computer science are two different things.
what can you even contribute to that giant clusterfuck? I have to say I find it quite scary
Imagine trying hard for your first contribution, sweating all over the place as you press the push button
and then a day later you get an angry rant from Linus calling your code absolute shit
>you must be in crippling debt like me so I can feel better about my life decisions.
I bet you're the same type of faggot who gets mad at non CS degree people on your team.
So, show that you would work for free to get a job being paid for programming?
but I studied for free and have no debt
That's why you don't commit a big project like a driver or something. Start with something simple, like a bug fix or whatever. Do the stuff nobody wants to do but that needs to be done and work yourself up.
>show that you would work for free
show that you possess skills valuable enough for a company to pay you for
Or actually pay for college. You gotta do something to prove you know anything.
How are you going to even afford the computer and internet connection to be able to commit to the linux kernel if you don't have a job?
Doesn't matter it's idiots like you who allowed the sjws to invade due to elitism and worrying so much about others instead of doing your own work so you can have your own assets in the future. Only losers go so hard to make other people money when the typical person will not fuck over any of your projects due to coding standards.
Then again I doubt you're even employed
wew sjw ARE winning, since when they sensor what we can say in Jow Forums? it was good while it lasted, so long faggots
So knowing what a float or double is isn't "computer science"?
I've absolutely no clue what you're even discussing right now
>idiots like you who allowed the sjws
who do you mean by that? I don't care what others do or don't, I'm just worried about the quality of software and the quality of the entire industry going to shit. I guess you can consider college/uni a sort of a filter, but if they want to get rid of it then they need a proper alternative. Coding bootcamps are terrible. Most companies either have low quality mentoring or no mentoring at all. Quality of self-taught skills can vary a lot if you don't have input on it.
>only losers go so hard to make other people money
but if everyone had their own companies and projects then who would do actual work? And you gotta start somewhere anyways
>I doubt you're even employed
but I am employed, sitting at work right now
go back newfaggot, that filter's been here for years
i know this is question has been asked a rhousand times but the fuck do you look in a resume. i put that mcjob inthere because i didnt want to look like i never held a job b4.
what makes a person stand out ina sea of applicants.
any input is appreciated. i feel like going to fairs have a better chance than applying online, since even the lazies get to do it from their homes. i am a late bloomer, who recently is trying to get his shit together.
today, almost all the code committed to linux is from paid programmers, bro.
always room for stuff. for example, the guys who started the open source driver for ATI gpus are now working for AMD.
LOANKEKS
bye bye stupid censorcuccks
learn to spell nigger it's LOANKEKS
computer science is primary about the design and analysis of algorithms.
I had a hard time getting a dev job without a CS degree, then I transitioned (MtF) and was easily able to land a 6 figure job doing front end JS for a good tech startup.
Now I'm learning Rust and will probably be getting a promotion soon and working on some backend.
I don't live in America, I'd be taxed to hell and back. Taxes represent 49.7% of our gdp, it's fucking insane.
I'd be better off having a stable and potentially well paid job.
Here the common dream isn't becoming a millionaire, but to obtain a "CDI".
thegoodlifefrance.com
We're basically a Socialist country by your standards
How are you going to afford college if you don't have a job?
live with your parents
I know this is a difficult concept for americans but we all gotta do what we hate sometimes
OP you faggot stop bumping this shitty thread for the sake of more clicks to your shitty websites
DON'T VISIT OP'S WEBSITE, THAT'S WHAT HE WANTS
kek
I don't care, I found it on HN, I just couldn't show the entire page on a screenshot
By not being a commie bastard?
waiting mr. Goldstein hired me for less than a pooinloo.
you didn't find it, Pete you low IQ retard
I'm just saying doing stuff for free is cheaper than doing stuff and pay for it. Not sure what your post has anything to do with that. Calling someone a communist is not an argument.
>Most CVs are so fucking bad. Seriously like
>>project 1
>>a project made using
>>it does something
>>i made it very good.
What's wrong with that?
>Imagine trying hard for your first contribution, sweating all over the place as you press the push button
>and then a day later you get an angry rant from Linus calling your code absolute shit
But I masturbate and cum buckets every day at the thought of being verbally abused by Linus Torvalds.
Pete, ffs this isn't HN, you won't get free advertising here, fuck off you low IQ retard
>>CV and a website/portfolio/github that are all proof you know your shit.
>projects good
>>Most CVs are so fucking bad. Seriously like
>>project 1
>projects bad
I'm not OP, I don't care about the website, it's probably shit. It just seems weird to me to say working for free is such a bad thing when paying to get to work is the alternative.
You get over it and program it the right way. Sure it “feels bad”, but then you realize it made you a better programmer.
stupid newfag
I was going to help you guys but I honestly feel like a retard for even trying.
What do you think a business wants?
>Made website with X :) me good :)
vs
>Improved X by using Y resulting in Z new users a month
Oh man, it's probably the dude saying he's got experience actually fucking doing something useful to the business, huh? Not just listing off tech used. Crazy.
Anyway, good luck. Just fucking google it.
Your CV sucks if you can't get interviews. End of story. Tech is insanely in demand and you should have at least 20% contact rate at a BARE minimum.
