Is it possible to make a network using RJ11 instead of RJ45?

you could theoretically set up a network on 1-wire interface, i guess. you could even use pigeons, and it's standardized
are you asking if you could connect two rj11 adsl modems to create a network?
Jack Bailey
is this a zoomer post or a post making fun of zoomers?
Yes you can get ""modems"" and connect them with ""telephone line""
I actually don't know if you could get your OS to recognize it as some type of lan connection though
Mason Foster
Yes, up to 100M only needs 4 wires so you could absolutely use RJ 11. Unfortunately you'd have to make an adapter to get from RJ45 to RJ11 because 100M uses the outside connector.
Nathaniel Wright
rj11 only has two wires though, not every hole in connector is filled
Matthew Moore
Yeah your're right, needs RJ12 or 14.
Wyatt King
Yeah, single pair Ethernet is a thing now
Parker Mitchell
With Linux you certainly could, the dial-up modem is a standard network device like anything else, so you can route it. Would be agonisingly slow though, the max full duplex bandwidth between two modems is 33.6 kbit/s. 56K modems and DSL are not symmetric bandwidth and require custom ISP head-end gear.
Ayden Gonzalez
yes you can use canbus. should be more than fine on rj11 plugs.
Joshua Lee
There's VDSL point-to-point devices out there that let you basically hook up two VDSL modems to each other.

You can use anything that can send arbitrary data to create some network. It's just matter of using different protocols.
Chase Cook
whoa it even has PoE, and is called PoDL, that's cute

We should use your mom as a cord then lmao

So I have an old Win95-era tower with a phone/modem jack and no ethernet but I also have a laptop with both. Can I use the laptop to bridge internet to the 95 machine?
Christopher Sanders
yes, we do it at work
James Murphy
If you know your Linux, sure, but it's more effort than it's worth.
Better just put Linux on the Win95 era box and use some ethernet or wlan adapter.
Jace Thompson
That's what I figured. But finding a decent i386 distro that can work with the limited RAM and stuff isn't easy. Best I can come up with Arch32.
Jason Collins
i586 sorry
Brayden Clark
RJ11-RJ45 adapters exist
Jace Cruz
AntiX should work kinda fine, though you might want to consider Gentoo or things like TinyCore
Julian Robinson
RAM is limited to how much? Generally speaking you can do a lot with not much RAM if you pick reasonable software.
Linux still runs on routers and tiny containers and so on, eh. Arguably you can even use SMALLER software than you were able during the Windows 95-XP times. They made smaller software for a lot of things.

Really the limiting factor would be using that with modern internet and not so much the OS. Jow Forums ought to work at least but nothing web 2.0.
Isaiah Russell
Yep, the modern internet will be a problem. Partial functionality could be possible with netsurf, lynx or such, but it won't work well.
Of course you probably just shouldn't use this machine for this, it's too old. Get a $25 Chinese HTPC or whatever.
Daniel Myers
I would love to transfer a 1mb file over pigeonnet
James Stewart
like 90% of all "RJ11" plugs and sockets I've seen had four contacts physically present, not just the middle two as required
Austin Scott
Ethernet doesn't use RJ45. I uses 8P8C.
Is Jow Forums full of luddites?

We use this type of cable to kick open the cashdrawer when the receipt printer prints out at the stores I support at work.
