what's with all the colors?
wasn't green meant for servers/datacenters?

green was meant to be "power-efficient" but they were hot garbage
the old green design was fixed but folded into the blue line because of green's reputation being damaged
now green is reserved for cheap SSDs

all the colour codes were just shit designed to make people think they were buying serious shit but all they were buying is the same garbage in a different colour

>Laughs in WD Reds

>laughs in WD white labels
Enjoy your overpriced Reds.

Enjoy your head parking , ergo diminished lifespan and short warranty :^)

green are low noise

The green ones taste better

red tastes better
red apples > green apples, point proven

>red apples > green apples
red apples suck, green apples are juice and taste better. red apples are bland and only sweet.

>laughs in 2000Mb/s

>QLC

Still 20x times faster than fastest HDD dinosaur

>green apple, take bite
>barely any sweetness, meat is hard as fuck, entire hand full of sticky juice, shit experience
>red apple, take bite
>EXTREME sweetness, meat is dry and soft at the same time, perfect experience

The first co did you just say? Golden Delicious > red delicious. Granny smith > Fuji.

Green ones taste way better!

This thread is now about produce colours.

>non-QLC

>wasn't green meant for servers/datacenters?
lmao no, it was meant for USB 2.0 external HDDs

still way too expensive to fully replace all my HDDs with

And a few times less reliable

He ate his granny...

Russian greens are fucking shit. Those tiny green ones however are tasty as hell.

Country apples are also way meatier with a richer texture, you don't feel like you're eating water with fruit like an orange.

You can turn that shit off

> meat is hard as fuck, entire hand full of sticky juice
that's hot

Green = environment
Blue = regular usage
Black = performance
Red = NAS
Gold = HGST/Enterprise

Personally I just buy whatever has a 5 year warranty.

bc low power consumption and not so speedy fast
have old barracuda 2Tb Green, still werks great

For boot drives and game install directories neither the higher speed of protocols like NVME nor the differences in write cycles and performance of mlc vs qlc really matter. There's some marketing bullshit that the PS5 will take advantage of PCIE4 SSDs and game devs will do something with that where as previously they were limited to cache and whatever was loaded in ram. NAND still needs to be powered on occasionally to retain its data so it can never be suitable for archival purposes either.

I used to think like that and got some HGST 4 TB NAS drives on sale. Best lowest failure rates for their time. What I didn't know was that NAS drives are clicky, hot, and not suppose to be a foot from your face.

Storage is so cheap now. I just want no noise and no worries about losing files.

If you care about not losing your files, then use your NAS drives for - check this out - a fucking NAS, or even just for weekly backups.

If your internal HDD's aren't Red White AND Blue, you're doing it unamerican

Green was cheap garbage. Learn the colors you half-wit.

Slow hdds make less noise.

I was moving around a lot and I didn't want another box to lug around.

Bought a purple one just the other day
Did I fuck up?

It will work fine, you just payed a tiny bit extra.

I store all kind of kinky porn on wd reds

To reach this nirvana might take some time. How long, you might ask?
INSUFFICIENT DATA FOR MEANINGFUL ANSWER

>baww I can't afford it so its bad!
lmao get a load of this guy fucking poorfags, take your spinning rust and food stamps somewhere else

no sane human being should be using SSDs in a network attached storage server unless you're a hardcore video editor or have a bunch of money to waste
for me it's HGST

Whether you're spending $100 or $10k you're still going to get more storage by opting for HDDs instead of SSDs.

Do you just buy NOS drives?

no
nowadays I assume the only people buying hard disk drives are those who need it for backups since you can get 1TB SSDs for a relatively-not-so-bad price

cellet lmao

Using SSDs for storage is stupid. I bought an He8 Ultrastar around 6 months ago and it's been going great, I was a little weary about trusting a drive that's been sitting on a shelf for four years. Probably going to buy another soon and dedicate my old 4TB Deskstar to backups

TLC? Really? Prices have come down now, at least get samsung pro MLC.

What was wrong with the green drives?

>car analogy

>too stupid to understand the analogy
I pity the fool

It was a poor analogy

>car analogy for computers
>not using both HDDs and SSDs as appropriate
Jesus I’m not even talking caching or tiering you can straight up have separate RAIDs and volumes as needed this shit isn’t hard

>just get a Lambo to do nothing more than get groceries and bring the kids to soccer practice

You're poor.

Yeah, I don't have a raid controller, but I use HDDs as cold storage and SSDs for my OSes

Yeah, but I boot faster, accessing files is faster and loading time for games is crazy fast.

I'm not saying not to use an SSD, I have several. But to use them for everything would be moronic. I've got 12TB of movies, TV shows, and music that won't play any faster because they're on SSDs.

>I've got 12TB of movies, TV shows, and music that won't play any faster because they're on SSDs
No, of course not. You stream all of that, and not lose quality.

>You stream all of that, and not lose quality.
Which streaming service offers remuxes?

>laughs in employment

WD's attempt at power efficiency was aggressive head parking and spindowns after only a few minutes of inactivity, which led to agonizing seek times as you waited for spinup, and you'd be shortening the usable lifetime of the drive by power cycling it so often.

>>EXTREME sweetness, meat is dry
This is why green is better

Shucked some 8tb wds recently and got white label helium reds. Anyway golds are gone now and wd enterprise use the hgst ultrastar branding now. If the drives changed then I suspect gold manufacturing went into red-pro.

>You can turn that shit off
Not for a while now. The firmware was locked down, and (at least for Reds) the drives don't support APM control from the host.

>Laughs in WD Ultrastar DC HC310s

god fucking damn i hate that bullshit

fuck APM head parking spam

the wd60efax doesnt seem to have it, but its 6tb and GOD DAMN SMR.

the WD80EFAX, WD120EFAX, WD100EFAX has it and its annoying as fucking shit, id rather use SMR than listen to some downs syndrome kid smashing a frying pan with a spoon all day.

Wait, what happens if I use the gold drive?

Why was it so hard to find yellow LED fans?

You die.

It's just corporate reshuffling.

lol
Is that black thing a cooler?

>[laughs in 10,000rpm]
yeah you need subtitle to know anyone's laughing while that thing is running

so they can sell you different shit at stupidly high prices.. instead of making once and for all a good drive that appeals to everyone (nowadays with SSD, that would be something mid tier performance, with low failure rates at a competitive price)

White label HDD's are the patrician choice of Drives. Fuck Brandname Rainbow homodrives
