Here is the main problem: you simply can’t trust the software center to give you the latest or most updated version of the software. You often have to go online and look up the developers website and see if they have a later version or want you to install their repository. The software center, on its own, feels unreliable as it often contains older versions of software. So what’s the point? Just like windows you are going to be searching online and seeing the best way to install the product anyway

You can't really say linux and windows 10 are competing. People buying computers don't think "gee, should I install windows or linux on the computer?"
linux is mostly used by people who refuse to use windows, and windows is used by everyone else. Linux only really competes with itself.
