EE here. I have never, ever in my life lost a PC part to ESD. Nor have I ever paid much attention to what I'm building on. It's really not such a huge deal as long as you don't wear a wool sweater and touch the parts with an air balloon rubbed against your hair.

Modern components are protected well from ESD. ESD damage does not cause the part to immediately fail, it lowers the lifespan.

What are you struggling with currently? I can tell you have the CPU cooler assuming you did it properly so your build should be mostly done at this point. Cables only fit where they should go so you can't mess up anything there. Boot your computer?

Plug in power supply to wall and touch it once to ground yourself
Now take out the motherboard, CPU and ram, and cooler. Put all that together.
Now install that put together motherboard in your case. Dont forget to put in your IO shield first.
Now install your power supply. If its a modular one, take out your GPU from its box to see how many PCIE power cables you need, and plug that into your PSU.
Now install your GPU and plug in any cables that you forgot like the USB headers and fan cables.
Now put on the sidepanel and you are done

I built my first one to play Halo with my brother. I remember I had problems with the wifi card so I called my uncle on the phone for some instructions. It was working perfectly afterwards. And it didn't feel like an accomplishment, more like "pray that this used parts aren't broken".

Also parts were really expensive and my parents weren't buying a console + games just so my dumbass can have some fun inside. I even feel bad nowadays for wasting more than 30€ on games because I grew with that mentality.
