So according to Jow Forums, macs are: >overpriced >shit hardware for the price >bad because closed source >for le it0ddlers and such >etc Yet most professional software developers (aka people who build things in the real world) seem to prefer macs over any other OS. This is especially prevalent as you advance in your career and become more highly compensated. Anecdotally, about 70% of fullstack devs I know tend to use a macbook. Why is this?
Can anyone explain this discrepancy? Do professional developers know something Jow Forums doesn't?
Professional developers use the operating system they're developing for so if you're developing for iphones you use a mac

I can't speak for others, but I use my MBP for the following reasons: 1) It's a NIX platform, so I have all the tools I use for writing code (cscope, vim, linting++). I use rsync to push code over to my test setup and build remotely 2) It has a superior battery life to any Linux distro I've used on a laptop 3) My employer paid for it, I didn't. I simply got to choose which laptop I wanted.
Also, macOS isn't entirely closed source, all the parts that matter, i.e. the kernel and core utils and drivers (except GPU driver), are free as in freedom.

The reason I use a mac is for the terminal. I would rather have a linux laptop but none of them work as well as a macbook pro.

wtf why are there like 3 of these threads at once
Cooper Murphy
I don't give two shits about software engineering but macs used to be decent for music production until the t2 fiasco

If you create any thread that's pro-apple, some asshurt poster will false flag spam copies of it until all are deleted.
Gavin Bell
There are 5 duplicate threads. Love it.

truly the hero Jow Forums deserves

How do you use vim with no escape key?
Jose Carter
Reminder OP is a mentally ill street shitting pajeet and has been spamming this shit for years.
only because you can't build iPhone apps without an iProduct. even using the meme interoperable language, you still need the iShit device.
Luke Cook
You need a mac to develop iOS and I'd assume a lot of photographers, video editors etc like the stability of MacOS over Windows. Mac hardware is fucking awful but MacOS isn't that bad.
Logan Morris
Uhhh, I'm so tired of these threads. It's like random men flash their asshole at me whenever they walk by me. Is nothing going to be done about all this constant spamming?
Grayson Morris
It's like linux but it just works desu
Parker Cooper
What is that, some kind of software ideology, "new coding paradigm" conference? Real software don't go to those kind of shitty things; they don't have the time. Those are amateur tech journalists.
they probably use it because its linux based and just works and you don't have to set it up. Also it comes in a cool aluminum case and costs alot so that means its for classy high society types
Christopher James
They don't have time to be dealing with configuring their system and just want a system that "just werks".

You have no utter idea what the fuck you are talking about. Are you some stupid toddler or something? Have you ever been to Silicon Valley? Most professional developers, and by far, use Visual Studio. You think that is why most of what the world is ruled by Microsoft?
Everyone I know is using Visual Studio. Even the Linux developers.
