I'm in research too for the same reason. I've done my time on the industry side as well and it does seem like industry is more infested with the same sort of shit stirrers that did this to Stallman. While academia is relatively safe for now, I have to wonder for how much longer? You have to remember Stallman was forced to resign from an academic post at MIT, not like he was forced out of google.
