i remember when i got demo cd's in cereal boxes i thought the full game was on the disk but just disabled so i tried to hack the exe with EDIT.EXE in windows xp. no success

I think that actually was the case many times

The internet got fast basically

Demos are still a thing. Also game distribution evolved along with drm and the internet.

back in the mid to late 2000s i used to go to gamershell.com just download game demos because i couldnt afford buying games yet.

Piracy happened.

Steam you fucking idiot I will kill you for not knowing this you worthless spindly little faggot fuck you I hope your parents are ashamed of having you cause you will never amount to anything you piece of shit

True, I remember reading the Game Journals back when and every now and then they wrote about little tricks to make more of the game playable.

DOOM has aged so poorly, Quake was so much better.

Oh fuck off everyone still loves doom

the internet became a thing

Capitalism

Fuck off, Shareware was capitalism at its finest.
>"Hey kid, want a game? Here try this. You can play more if you give me your moms credit card and ill send it over to you"

microtransactions are the new hot thing
>mobile game
>hey pay us $1.99 for a new outfit that doesnt improve gameplay at all, you know you wanna
>$4.99 for this epic fire red vehicle that doesnt improve gameplay at all but you can brag to your friends about it

and then Guiltware will rise
>Hey, im a non binary gender fluid dev and i made a game. Its a text adventure were you fight evil politicians! And if you dont buy my game ill dox you and say you tried to rape me in social media
Ah, what a wonderful time for vidya

>tfw got Scrabble, Monopoly, and Hot Wheels Micro Racers in cereal boxes
Micro Racers was pretty fun, too.

Shit you just know you are old when you just don't get the youth.

>when you found out Space Cadet Pinball was just a demo and there were more tables

Depends on if you are a purityfaggot or not and pretend 25 years of mods and source ports exist

Doom still feels fresh, fast and responsive. There are so many great WADs out there. Eviternity is just one example.

What, really?

WAIT WHAT

the game is called Full Tilt! Pinball and Space Cadet is just one of 3 tables

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_Tilt!_Pinball

also there is a 1996 sequel with 3 more tables.

Vanilla is still fun as hell, Plutonia alone is a masterpiece.
But yes, there's indeed 25 years of maps and mods, some which is incredibly good, which is one of the big draws and why Doom has so much longevity.

I fucking love Quake though.

Doom 2016 actually has a demo too

>Not having the shareware of dos "Epic Pinball" (yes hard to believe it was THAT Epic Games these days) where it was only the android stage

I agree.
While I'm here, I'd like to plug a cool .wad that gets little attention, Nihility : Infinite Teeth is an episode 2 replacement for Doom 1, it uses lots of alpha/beta assets and dehacked trickery which all together makes for an experience that somehow feels very oldschool (with the aesthetics of the old developmental content), yet also very fresh in terms of level design, gameplay, and atmosphere.

It's essentially the shareware episode for a full megawad someone is making. There's no music, rather it uses lots of ambient sound effects, and the silence actually makes it somewhat spooky. Don't know if that's a permanent thing, or if the author maybe intends for some ambient tracks later.
I'm hoping to see the full one some day, but even if I don't, the demo episode is one of the best level sets for Doom I've ever played, and I can't recommend it enough.

The shareware model is literally free market capitalism.
Go for a helicopter ride.

Pre-orders happened. Then the industry realized they didn't have to release complete games anymore, and could fund their development on hype.

Hence, no more demos. Why pay for or release a demo if people are ordering your shit already anyway?

Basically, demos died because people are dumb.

this. people will buy full games just based on the name or a single preview video. even if the game isnt done and runs on 8 months of DLC

Yes we get it marketing product with a free sample is free market capitalism gotcha

i think he is a zoomer and thinks late stage capitalism == capitalism
also i think zoomers dont like the current state of capitalism, even though they live in a time where they have devices capable of running the businesses they'd prefer exist - in their pockets
sure is a clown world when people think theyre oppressed but can literally start a retail store on their mobile phone

it is, congratulations retard
you can't sell things under communism, because that would be capitalism.
how fucking retarded are you lol

The goal is still profit, shareware is just another way to market to the consumer, to convince them to spend money on your product.
You should kill yourself, you underage faggot.

'Late stage capitalism' is a buzzword for retards.

The cool thing was to play unique levels exclusive to shareware versions. The whole "whenever you buy the game everything is brand new". Nowadays a system that's not as good but still decent its demos that let you transfer your progress to the full game.

how do i make the graphics look good? the pixel shit makes me nauseous

remake when?

I heard they did internal studies and found that games with demos typically sold less than games without demos. Plus marketing in other ways probably got better enough that it wasn't worth it.

-not really relevant when like everyone has access to the internet. No need to ask for a shareware from your friends game CD when you can dl it yourself
-devs can shit up their website/dl page and the trial programs' installers with ads making a few cent from it while shareware shared between users generates to revenue and no telemetry data

lmao
imagine being this zoomer
come to an actual commie/socialistic state like the one i live in and see if your retarded way of thinking wont get you killed

Who else ever installed/played Chex Quest?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chex_Quest

"micro" transactions

How are things in Venezuela these days?

No need, already perfect

Is that a chicken with a stick of dynamite up its ass?

like shit

Shouldn't take too long
Someone has been making progress with a build-engine sourceport:
m210.duke4.net

maaaaee mahhhnnnnnn

developers not sell own products anymore
it's what actually happened

The media here stopped talking about Venezuela after the videos of people stealing clothes off bodies.

The everyman got exposed to software.
Then developers realized that consumers are retarded.

No, this has nothing to do with just publishers, even indie games do shit like "early access" where you basically pay full price for a demo to be a beta tester.

Not many people new about it.

too many people who used shareware front loaded games, meaning the only good part was shareware and the rest was a fuck you I got your money now. we look at it with rose tinted glasses.

Too generous. Normie friends and family back in 1994 were content with episode 1 and were happy to just play that over and over.

i thought i would never become like that, but here i am, probably spent $400+ on fortnite so far.

Where did your life go so wrong?

I was a retarded kid and always thought the url read gamer shell

We call them F2P games now. The game is free but tempts the user will all sorts of gambling mechanics (loot boxes, gacha etc.)

Yup, AND it's made by Maxis

I liked Episode 1 of Doom the least. To be honest, I liked the original Doom the least. Doom 2 is better in almost every way.

I think Doom 1 is more consistent in level quality, there's only one or two maps I actually dislike, whereas there's a few more in Doom 2, which I think varies a fair bit.

E1 is definitely the least fun episode though, but not in the sense that it's bad or anything.

john romero just made us his bitch with a brand new megawad like a month ago

*episode
But yes, it was good.
