It's basic WW2 history that the Wehrmacht wasn't mechanized and began the Barbarossa campaign with about 520,000 horses pulling wagons, which rose to 2+ million over the course of the war. German logistics was entirely reliant on horses

horses don't run on oil. They could have had all the oil in the world but they had no way to transport fuel to the front lines without a mechanized army or more horses

The Heer KNEW that Barbarossa was doomed from the start, they told him not to get involved in SE Europe. They told him that logistics would be a nightmare and that they needed cheap reliable tanks not wunderwaffen.
What did Hitler do? Get high, waste a large part of Germany's resources and industrial output on stupid pet projects and shuffle army groups around instead of just trusting the people who actually knew what they were doing.

Hitler pushed for the caucuses because the whole German invasion plan rested on getting the oil in the region. It was his moronic generals who to paraphrase knew nothing of the economics of war seeking glory that pushed for an invasion of Moscow. Their thinking was a straight push towards the capital, capture the city and the enemy declares surrender. Well we all know the Russians had no plans to surrender and if Moscow fell with the majority if their manufacturing capacity behind the Urals the war would continue. Germany had a massive economic capacity to create an motorised army but the one thing that always chewed away at them was a lack of oil.

Germany had no way to get oil from Baku the German industries. Baku is hundreds of miles further from Germany than Moscow is, they would have dealt with the same problems. In fact in the second year of the campaign, when the Wehrmacht had even more horses for their logistics, they still ran out of fuel trying to reach Baku and were defeated on that alone.
